Renaissance people are amazing. Andrea Hayward is a person such as that. Designer, artist, maybe even architect! Hayward is a master at whatever project in need to creative interpretation that comes her way. And what’v we got here? Keys. Lots of keys. The project you see above is called “Pure Gold” and is the newest in what I hope is a long series of key-grid installations, the first of which was just done late 2009. Upcycling yay! AAXI: Aesthetic Apparatus Turns 10 Years Old …Again
So graphic design and poster printing team Aesthetic Apparatus is ten years old. …wait a second, weren’t they ten years old LAST YEAR? Yes, yes they were. That’s why there’s an exhibition at the MCAD gallery here in Minneapolis that’s going by the name “AAXI: A DECADE OF AESTHETIC APPARATUS, ONE YEAR LATE.” View MCAD-approved photos of the opening night below. Continue reading
Grids Lines and Cardboards
Here’s an installation artist by the name of Clemens Behr who specializes in wildness. Lines and grids everywhere, red and black and silver, all of it on cardboard and tape. So it’s not the most expensive to execute! And best ever, he’s sponsored (at least in this newest exhibition) by Montana Spray Paint for all that color! This newest exhibition is a solo show by the name of “Black and White Everything (And Me)” and it’s taken place at the ROJO®artspace in Barcelona. It’s nearly finished now, so we can show you pics! Continue reading
The Big Tuk!
Behold one big boxy line! This is a massive installation piece of design art made huge for your eyeballs by architect / designer / artist Arne Ingvaldsen. It sits pretty at Trøndelag senter for samtidskunst, Trondheim, Norway. It’s made quite simply of painted drywall. How it’s done so cleanly I just cannot understand. Must be some undeniably skillful craftsmen at work. It’s called “Turquoise” and it rests nicely on three points – 2 on the ground and one holding it steady at the middle, the back of the beast resting on the mezzanine beam above. Not to be touched by ruffian childrens! Continue reading
Absolutely Devotion
The title of this post is wrong. The project this post is about is NOT wrong. It’s severely right. In this project there are 10,000 that’s ten-thousand origami flowers, all folded by one guy. This guy his name is James Roper, and he folded these flowers over the course of three years. Every day he would fold an average of ten of them, which is smart, don’t wanna wreck your hands from doing repetitive motion, every day for three years. That’s intense. I mean it. What you’re going to see in the gallery below is only a few pictures, each of them showing a different composition of the flowers on the floor of a gallery. Oh so lovely. Continue reading
Everybody in Minneapolis
Here’s a project! Invented by a classroom full of wild and crazy senior designers from the Minneapolis College or Art and Design is this campaign to fire up the Minneapolis extended community. This is social design. Their first step was this US + THEM poster and flier campaign as seen above (and below); executed over an 18 hour time allotment, they doused downtown, uptown, and Dinkytown Minneapolis. Branding repetition works, it works, it works. And then there were a twisty. Continue reading
The Golden Cart
This is the Golden Cart. It is gold. It is branded with the name Okko, which is totally gourmet. They have hard-to-find foods there. And what’s better to hold all your million-dollar foods and drinks than a freaking golden blinged-out cart? Nothing. Nothing is better. This cart sits nicely inside your local Instanbul Okko. Continue reading
Pumped Up About Love Unites
Holy crap I’m totally pumped up for this insane event. It’s gonna be next week, November 12, in West Hollywood. If any of you folks wanna go there and take a bunch of photos for us to post, we’d definitely shoot a sticker+fun pack your way for the trouble.
Look at all the celebs and their artworks! Continue reading
Invisible Person Fashion
So you’ve invisible, but basically the fact that you’ve got to be naked to be entirely invisible, that makes you so nervous. So you’ve got to wear clothing. What do you wear? Photographer / designer Jennifer Mao knows. This set of photos is called “With Or Without You” and it’s not necessarily about the monster mash. Continue reading
Broken Trees The New Orientation
Daniel Eatock does it. He’s a photographer, designer, idea-haver. This project of his reorients the perspective of the world, rather than seeing the trees as broken. A lovely way of seeing things, or the highest form of vigilanteism? A photographer is a sort of Batman, isn’t he? Capturing images with either no concern for one’s self, or just the opposite. Batman complex. Eatock complex. Continue reading
Tiger Poppin
Tigers are a rather iconic species if I do say so myself. Their lovely stripes and ferocious yet collected disposition makes for a totally awesome beast-form to strive for. In my search for the perfect image of a tiger to reflect on during my daily meditation time I happened upon this fabulous “Korean Tiger” print by artist Nancy Reed*. I thought wowie, that’s fantastic – it’s so full of majesty, so full of excellence!
Und so the tiger icon collection began. Across the entire internets of the world I scoured and found the greatest. And a couple of the least, just for larfs. Continue reading
Rest in Bed
Who is the dude or lady who gets to design the iconography that covers the graveyard? Who gets to set the type on the stones? Designers who design for the dead. That’s what I wanna know about. For now, check out this very lovely and very real bed for the dead by designer Robert Stadler for his father. See below for a nice collection of images of it and some info, or if you’d like to see it in real life, just visit DÖbling Cemetary in Vienna. Simple! Continue reading
Verre and Papier in Marseille
Marseille, in France. Circa 2009, now. This initiative, placing these lovely (ugly?) bins around the city of Marseille is now in place. Photographer Jos Jansen has taken the time to do a rather literal exploration of the environment as it’s affected by the bins. Doth it help keepin clean the environment, yes surely, but does it then also contribute to visual pollution? And how long until these clean spic n span bins are covered in graffiti? Continue reading
Terrestrial Syndrome
A chopped-off wolf head that’s so intense that it continues to reflect on the wilderness, and a boat floating up to mars surrounded by houses on fishing line. These are two examples of the utterly majestic art show that’s coming to the Shooting Gallery in San Francisco. This show is sharp and yet dreary, heavenly and yet vintage junky (vintage junky stuff is good stuff!) Get your heart set on artists Kevin E Taylor and Erik Otto, cause they gonna set your heart on fire. With oil paints!
NOTE: No tripping balls allowed in the gallery without express permission. Continue reading
Erik Inkala Rock and Roll Party
Holy blizzardsmith this man is leaving. Erik Inkala. He is a graffiti artist here in Minneapolis and he is heading off to New York city with a big fat sendoff bash as set up by First Amendment Gallery aka Burlesque of North America. It’s sure to be a smelly bash! Apparently there’s going to be a crap-ton of artists involved in this show, and I have no idea where they are going to fit them all. Take a peek at this tiny space they’re going to smash artists into, then go to the show when it starts. Holy crap for god’s sakes. Continue reading
Environmental Hamster
Enter the Hampster Shredder. The way of the hamster future. The hamster population will thank you for the new shreddings, but might fear you more than normal because of the noises of the shreds. As far as hamster-related inventions go, this is one of my favorites. Because paper is free, and paper is everywhere. IE: f you can’t find free paper, you basically don’t know what’s going on in life, but if you own this shredder, you get a little reprieve. A little hamster reprieve. Continue reading
Black is Native Red is Native
Best believe that. This is a show of everlasting proportions and I think you’re soon to see why. This particular set of works is currently on display at White Walls gallery in SF, California. These artists hit hard in the heart with hand-painted works on found objects and canvas. The found objects are borrowed street signs and etc. They are returned to different locations after the artist has added to them. The oils are fabulous, the paint on signs is fabulous, the absolute abstractions of the stars and bars are fabulous. Continue reading
Gigantic Wooden Asterisks and Simple Paper Footnotes
Welcome to the Results Under Action project. For those who wish, with humongoid wood-backed asterisk structures and plain, easy to read footnotes, to understand the intricacies of the architecture and space around them. Get pumped up about your social environment! This particular adventure is called “Public Market Fiasco” and it takes place in Portland, Oregon, at the Yamhill Marketplace; asterisk capital of the universe! Continue reading
Keep on Campin in the Free World
Here it is. The camper bike. Artist / designer Kevin Cyr has created this fabulous monster with the “revolutionary heart” in mind. Cyr constructed this fully-functional piece both to use for camping and as a subject for a series of pictures. Paint, graphite pencil, and curious, inspired eyes are what makes this project fly! Continue reading
No Spitting in Minneapolis
I was up in city hall by the street-cleaning office today and WHAM, there’s the best sign about spitting on sidewalks I’d ever seen. I was there. The sign was there. The guy whose sign it was was there. He told me that it wasn’t an official sign for the city, but that he thought it should be. Continue reading
Under Water
Photographer James Cooper brings you under the sea in a collection of ways you might never have thought of or up. Take for example the set of green horses just floating about. Or perhaps you’d be more into some green string tied to some rocks? I bet you’re here for the spraypaint can. All of these things are much more magnificent underwater, and since I know that’s what you want to see, Cooper has you covered. Continue reading
Hiding in Plain Parking Spot
So you know about cars, right? They’re crafty. They’ve got so many different ways of hiding in their natural habitats, especially in the snow-ridden midwest. Photographer / designer Jordan Winick goes on the hunt. This is an ongoing project entitled “Camo Cars” because basically, these cars aim to remain in the shadows. Continue reading
Eye See You Again
Another eye! Realism in graffiti is what’s up. This is the second time I’ve found a painting of an eye within 2 blocks. Right along Hiawatha was the first one. Also with the eye are several other fun train happenings: phrases, small paintings, tags (of course), and my favorite: oil crayon writings. Take a peep! Then don’t forget to take a look at the rest of the happenings all along Hiawatha. Continue reading
No Mo Borin Meetins
Copenhagen based design and art studio Hvass&Hannibal has their hands on a meeting room for meeting-room central DGI CITY (basically a gigantic hotel/restaurant/meeting area complex in Copenhagen.) Big time! DGI did right by the world to hire H&H for this thang. Take a look at those hot lines! Take a look at the rest of the room below. Continue reading
Aladdin Sane and Cheerios
Design group Hello Monday has had several collaborations with fashion teams in the fashion industry with whom they’ve made some nice fashions with. As you’d imagine, most of them end up being lovely line illustrations and distortions as you see above (and below.) This is one of David Bowie’s more digital moments. Continue reading
