Lifted by Josh Keyes

This right here is unnatural nature at it’s finest. This is a show by the fabulous Josh Keyes, painter. The name of the show is “Fragment”, and the theme is transformation. Keyes is known for these paintings, unmistakably his: each of them with animals and urban fervor, each of them ultradimensional in their impossible flatness. Devour this newest set of 10 paintings, two of them unfinished, and witness the blocks cut out from another world.

cliff chiang package in the mail

The stash is here. Cliff Chiang‘s sent us in a box of fabulous flats. Prints from the streets of comicdom. Everything we need to start our insane Cliff Chiang collection! First, a set of Atomic Bombshells postcard-sized prints. Then, an insanely colorful signed print of the whole gang from Dr. Thirteen: Architecture and Mortality (fear the Nazi ape.) Next, two more brilliant prints: Batman over Gotham and a totally bad warrior woman battling a minotaur that even if you don’t recognize, you’ll have to love. And the crowning jewels: prints of both the Electra/Flashdance record cover AND my favorite Batgirl/Purple Rain.

Boats and Apes

It’s rough on the streets. On the streets, you’re on your own. When you want to do some art in the streets, you get arrested. But first, you get slapped in the face for not being original! Holy cripes you just wrote your name like everybody else. Look at this, though, this lady right here, Nina Wehrle, aka one half of “It’s Raining Elephants,” they paint boats and monkeys. Boats and monkeys! Ships and apes! Check out the whole collection of things they’ve done below, all done within the last year.

13 is the number of the sheep

Top o’ the crown of thorns to ye this morning! Right here we’ve got a set of photos from one of the places Jesus Christ himself dwells: the hills of Ireland. Photographer Josh Murfitt was there a few months ago, and here he’s been so kind as to bless us with a look through his viewfinder. It’s just beautiful out there in the greens.

GUITAR_LESSONS

Let’s explore for a moment this miraculous poster print. This is called “Guitar lessons: A series of master classes” as given by the biggest and best guitarists in history. This illustration is set down on paper by swankmaster draw-artist Maxim Dalton (more on the physical manifestation of this poster below.) Dalton’s got a hankerin for a rock and roll shred-a-thon and he’s invited quite a few WFDJ’s favorites!

Floating Boat

Not too much higher than that. Lower, though, down in to the pits of photo manipulation. In a very general sense, when I find contents, in a situation where there’s digital photo editing, I steer clear. That’s generally though, because digital manipulation is easy – doing frigging fantastic digital manipulation requires professional skillz. That’s what’s going on right here. Artist / designer “Grape Frogg” is on that list. Look hard at this fabulous set of manipulated photos and let your head explode. Keep your eyes though, we’ll be needing those.

type in foamcore

What a terrible title. This project is all about letters. Gigantic typesetting letters made out of everyone’s favorite material: foamcore. What foamcoar is really depends on who you are, what you’re using it for: for the average citizen, it’s just a big hunk of really dense foam. You can write your name in it! For an artist, it’s better than a tuber! You can carve your life away, and at only $10 a giant block! Bigger than your whole body!

So artist / designer Balázs Szabó did just that. Made some gigantic letters.

art by ZIM

This is a book called “Cartoons and Caricatures or Making the World Laugh” by ZIM. And it’s the friggin greatest book about illustrating cartoons I’ve ever seen. It’s a little dirty, but that’s because it’d been at the bottom of a pile of books for 50 years. I bought it for a buck*, and now you get to see it. A bunch hilarious illustrations and timeless setups all for the greater good of classic, classic-assed humor. And also a few giggles along the way.

Chihuahua’s are the world’s most cutest dogs. That’s a lie! But not in this post right here. Illustrator Alfonso Muro had a puppy. That puppy is memorialized forever in this illustrated set of portraits. See the puppy, the mother, the dad, the puppy driving the car, and even the kitties. It’s important to note the detail in the car.

Apple Retro Light Modification

Generally, and I mean most of the time, it’s basically OK to spit on cosmetic modifications to the cases of laptop computers. This one though, made by mah man MONK in Japan. It’s a simple change, really: just an hour of careful, careful taking apart of the cover, and a little bit of transparent rainbow paper. Don’t try this at home, though, unless you happen to expect to never have a problem with your computer again – a change like this voids your warrantee and any other safety guarantee you’ve got, all for a little cuteness!

STEEL LACE

Ripped to shreds! Actually part of an ongoing series of works made with stencils and plasma cutting on steel pieces of metal. The steel kind. Spectacular patterning can be seen in each of these, the newest works by one Cal Lane, the pieces you see inside from both the “Car Parts” set and the “Filigree Car Bombing” pile. These pieces, part of a larger set of works called “Steel Lace,” are just the kind of thing I’d really like to have but wouldn’t have a place to put it! Perhaps a big steel shed. It’s a dilemma of epic proportions.

HMV Japan

The years 2000 through 2010 have been years of light. Years of brightness. Aesthetically, years of Japanese madness. I’m speaking about the culture I’ve immersed myself in specifically, that being the street art scene, hip-hop, rap, street clothing, et al. These cultures have really tied themselves together over the past ten years, and the bow they’ve used to tie tight is extremely wildly colored. The root is above. The streets of Shibuya at night. The madness. The glorious, super-fantastic aesthetic madness.

correctresponsetocomicsans

A wise man once said of red and black: that’s all you really need, really. That man was Dan Ibarra. Today we’re not talking about him though, we’re talking about Nebojsa Cvetkovic, who’s made this fantastic set of red and black (and white) posters for our eyeball indulgence. As you can see above, these aren’t always kind, but they are always easy on the eyes. Peek out the paint-like stylings, the cleverness of the graphic-minded phrases, and the liberal use of eagle putting bread in toaster, not to mention pie graph showing kiss enjoyment.

eyeballs in apples

Here’s a fun little illustration project hacked on up by Konstantin Shalev. In it, several different “Space Crime” objects are created with interchangeable color schemes. What you see above is the ultra-smashed-together vision made for the final product – a bus. But check it out – look at that mass. The intensity of the color is only matched by the fineness of the detail. Not one object is made out of silly scale. Fabulousness.

Dissected Rad Knitted

So let me tell you this. It seems like there might be a thread and yarn revolution going on. If you search for the word “knit” or “stitch” on World Famous Design Junkies, you’ll find no lack of posts published recently, ALL of which ended up being really quite popular due to their unique nature. People are really enjoying the idea of turning this cute craft into something distorted and in a very modern way beautiful.

What we’ve got here today is right up there with the best: “Knitting in Biology 101″, a project by The Crafty Hedgehog, master of the knit!

INSANE vampire poster

You’ve seen them. Videogame Classics made retro and simplified, the “Now Panic and Freak Out” sign, and yes, even a lobster with human hands. Real good stuff, real good. And it’s all over the place, these picture sharing sites like ffffound, dropular, and even the upencoming We Heart It. But where do they all come from? These supercharged pictures are all done by designer Olly Moss, master of the internets.

jonas_bergstrand

Let me introduce to you a dude by the name of Jonas Bergstrand. You’ll recognize the stylistic choices, if not some of the exact images instantly. He seems to have studied the same books (metaphorically) as my main man John K (of Ren and Stimpy fame.) Classical techniques with a friggin beautiful modern manner. Check out the Che Guevara and Castro illustrations in the gallery below for a real treat.

Jesus was a rolling stones cross stitch

This is a gem. I bought this unique work of pure design artwork for a dollar. Yes! A dollar! I couldn’t believe noone else had picked it up. He’s looking fine, as you can see, and the craftwork here is flawless. Not only is the stitching itself lovely, but as you’ll notice in the gallery below, the canvas itself is cut perfectly to fit the fine plastic and plastic frame.

paper covered instruments

The superman designer Kyle Bean has taken a whole lot of time to cover up a bunch of instruments with paper. Each little bit of every instrument covered collage/wallpaper style with sheet music. Along with that, a few suitcases covered with maps. All this and color accents made for UK high fashion and luxury store Hermès. In the windows through the beginning of 2010. After that I think he should send that guitar to me!

World Famous Design Junkies Tadanori Yokoo

Focusing now on his painting works and super-fun clothing line, graphic design champion Tadanori Yokoo has quite a fantastic collection of posters and poster projects under his belt. It would be a feat indeed to collect them all. What we’ve done here is to collect what’s believed to be all of his poster works large enough for viewing on the internet. Someday there might be a massive scanning of his works so they might be entered into the great machine. Until then, this.

Stand back and just look at the appeal of it.
