If you’re an avid reader of World Famous Design Junkies, you might remember a giveaway we did with Vannen Artist Watches a few months ago when they released their special edition Halloween 2009 band : [WFDJ 2009 Halloween Giveaway]. Now they’ve got their second standard set coming out, and it’s fabulous! We’ve got one on hand here, a green monster designed by the legendary comic-style graffiti artist BIGFOOT. Behold the unboxing above and below, complete with a true-to-beans commentary on the quality tick-tock inside.
This box arrived in the mail today inside a giant box and paper, wrapped in such a fashion that the only way it’d be damaged is if someone sledge-hammered it on purpose. The quality of the product is instantly apparent once you’ve got the product box in your hand. It’s a minimalistic design, thick styled and printed in a way that encourages the purchaser to keep and display it. I’ve got a couple close-ups down there in the gallery that show the time and effort put into yes, amazing, a gloss layer of ink on the outside of the box.
Then I opened it. It’s intuitive to open, nicely protected yet again on the inside. Bubble wrap! It would be almost a miracle if you ordered one of these watches and found it to be anything less than mint condition. Nearly impossible. You get an instructions sheet and a high-quality vinyl sticker for your sticker collection, and one amazingly touch watch.
When we first started working with Vannen, I remember there being comments about the first-glance quality of the watch. I remember people commenting on how these watches seemed to be the same thing they used to get at McDonalds in their Happy Meals when they were kids. I’m here to tell you: these ain’t no plastic pieces of crap. They’re amazing.
The density of the band is such that it’s almost too heavy: the hardest part of this whole unboxing process was getting the watch to curl around my arm. After the first latching though, it was easy. It’s like breaking in a new pair of fancy shoes.
The quality of the printing and the detail in each of the little bits is quite nice. Each little place without artwork by Bigfoot has an embossed or otherwise almost-invisible Vannen brand mark. THe back of the watch has the Bigfoot footprint signature and is protected by a single layer of peel-off plastic that I suppose you could choose to keep on or peel.
Now here’s what’s unique, unique about this culture I suppose, and definitely true of this product: I don’t want to wear it. Not because it’s bad, no way! Because it’s too beautiful. I’m not going to wear it because I want to display it. This watch is limited edition, too, so if you feel like labeling it, you could consider is a piece of design art.
It’s hot. It’s a hot watch.
I’ve got no doubt the rest of the set’s just as hot too. Believe it.
You can contact Vannen Artist Watches using their contact form if you’d like to carry the watches in your store or if you’ve got some questions, visit their website if you wanna purchase a watch for yourself! You’ll be just so cool.
