Toy collections. I know some people that’ve got some mad crazy ones. I think it’s amazing to have a huge one, but it’s best to have a precise one. One that inspires, one that encourages, and most importantly, one that creates an environment in which one can work effectively. For a toy designer, what better collection to have than toys and toy related ephemera. The rooms you’re about to explore belong to Tatsuhiko Akashi, founder and head of MediCom Toy.
Tatsuhiko Akashi along with a former LEGO employee designed the most basic figure of MediCom: the Kubrick. You’ll see a bunch of Be@rBrick figures, which are a slight derivative of the Kubrick series, around the office. Be@rbrick are amongst the most amazing and fabulous of this new world of toys because they’re made of and covered with a lot of different materials including plastic, wood, and felt.
Kaws, Futura, Stitch, and a couple of life-sized 1:1 scale Star Wars droids. All of these photos were taken by Todd Selby for his ongoing exploration of creative spaces called “The Selby.” There’s a book out of his previous works that goes by the title “The Selby is in your place” – buy it from an indy bookstore at Indy Bound. Yay bookstores!
