This sort of illustration is what I call “American Flat.” Not to be confused with the “Superflat” of Takashi Murakami. This is Yankee grown. American Flat is the cousin of the more broad, loose American style used by design duo Aesthetic Apparatus, and is basically the twin-brother of the artwork of Gary Taxali. I’ve been drawing as long as I can remember. At some point during my education, my drawing stopped getting me in trouble, and started getting noticed. While working at studios, I steered away from developing a particular illustration style. The variety of styles that we executed provided more choices and customization for our clients—yet, I felt that my work needed more refinement. Today, I’m constantly challenging myself to polish my skills. There is a certain satisfaction in seeing a style develop over time. – Matt Thomas
