Heeeell yeah it’s an art show! It’s an artshow by a smart design artsman by the name of Shawn Wolfe, all the way up down in San Diego. The Wolfe is known for his paintings, sculptures, screenprints, t-shirts, and basically everything else he can get his mitts on. This show right here, it’s got carvings on wood, paintings on panel, hand-cast plastic resin, and screenprints. See those belooow.
Personally, I’d describe the contents of this show to basically be signs… of the apocalypse. Clevernesses executed very nicely with rough elements just the way I love. The imagery is nice, where there is imagery, and the letter forms are very immediate. In that these signs would be at home in any offbeat person’s home, I’d compare the works to that of this new cult of artists who take classic and kitsch crafts to subvert for their own. The results are almost exclusively wonderful.
Check out a search for cross stitch in our artchives and keep your eyes open to master graffiti artist ESPO for letterforms similar to these. Sort of. I mean, in a way. You know what I mean. ALSO find out final info on the Subtext Gallery homepageblogsite

Words from the gallery:
Our second show in 2010 marks Shawn Wolfe’s first solo exhibition in San Diego. Shawn Wolfe is a multi-talented artist, designer and illustrator from Seattle, Washington whose work has taken the form of paintings, sculptures, screenprints, t-shirts and everything in between. His works are self described as, “ponderous, playful, and pointless”. Pointless or not, Wolfe has been featured in Arkitip, Emigre, Metropolis, House Magazine, Print and Raygun. His list of clients include the culture-jamming group Negativland, Barsuk Records, Subterranean Press, Experience Music Project and Nike.
As always (thanks to our friends at Sezio) Cousins will be playing a live set in the courtyard at 9pm, so don’t miss out.
All the items you see in the gallery below are tentatively in the show. If you want to see the actual contents of the show, which I’m sure will have more contents than just these contents, get yourself on over the San Diego to the Subtext gallery. Frealz.
The greatest, in my eyes, of all these is the utterly epic tri-fecta “They Said It Couldn’t Be Dumb” featuring a space battle deluxe between the mighty titans Boston, Mike Oldfield and his Tubular Bells, and the fabulous ELO, all mastering space. This is a meeting that HAD to happen! See each of these ships below the thumbnail gallery in all their glory.
