By definition, a sketch is a drawing not meant to be finished. But lo! Look at whose moleskin is filled with sketches taken way beyond the average sketchy lightness a sketch would be sketched. This is the newest set of pages from the moleskin of illustrator Andres Guzman. Look at all the color and shading and blacks and whites and everything going on oh my god look at it all! Super amazing on every single page.

Let me show you this sketch journal. It’s done by a fellow named Ian Hands (cool name, friggin awesome!) who’s also known as DEPT H. This is one of several of his sketchbooks done in mixed medias, all sorts of marker, pen, paint, ink, pencil, all done in such a detailed and layered fashion that one can scarcely consider it a book of simple sketches. Nay I say, though they may be jammed healthfully in with a collection of sketchbooks, the contents of these pages are no mere sketches. Masterworks on tiny pieces of paper they are, truly colorfully delicious, arranged in a way so very tasty they be.

This particular sketchbook is titled “Avebury 2004,” though weather that implies that it was done in a certain year or not, only Hands doth truly know.

DEPT H is a multifaceted magic-maker I must say, incase you wanted to explore further. Metro Doodles is what I call this form of drawing. You sit on the train, tram, whatever you’ve got and you draw the people around you, and if rare cases, there’s a robot or a phantom or something, that’s not a human, but you still wanna draw it. But you’re not always on the train for a long time, especially if you’re on a tram you don’t have a million years to draw. But to capture the scene your eyes see without an instant device such as a camera, well there, a different quality about it. These drawings are all done by Aurélie Bordenave.

Miss Aurélie Bordenave works and plays in Paris, France, and gets a lot of eyeball to fingertips to pencil action on the metro line, and here is the evidence. Look at the masterful works here, and feel the energy. It’s a unique energy, one that only comes from capturing and translating a moment, a scene in life, down for yourself on a piece of paper. And here’s something I bet you might not know: it’s healthy.

For most people, drawing quickly, capturing the world in this fashion, helps on become calm, helps one become centered and strong in the moment. It also, surprise!, helps one become better at drawing and illustrating pictures, which is good for everyone. Everyone should have a basic set of skills in the illustration world. Not only does it make you healthy socially, but it helps you be calm and mentally healthy.

The title of this project is “Croquis de métro” aka “Subway Sketches.”

Fingers collect to make the hand, and the hand draws the type. It is my pleasure to be telling you about the fantabulous works of none other than illustrator / designer Camila Drozd. In this post you will see several examples of Drozd hand-drawn-type. This is not some silly-biller work, this is craftwork. This is something that no Joe-Shmo can do, this is the work of a professional. A professional whose worked for hours and hours, days and days, years and years to get to an excellent place. An excellent place where even the personal doodles show shining spirits from Design Heaven blinking their eyes in amazement.

That’s what’s here.

The works you see above and below are executed by Camila Drozd for fun. These are “Personal Type Work” works made just for promotion and enjoyment. Can you even imagine the things done by Drozd for pro work? No way! It’d be so good, how could anyone imagine it! That’s why there’s some examples of that shown below as well.

When I think of things precious, I think of a ring, I think of something breakable, something special. When I think of a breakable, special item, I think of Bleeding Gums Murphy of the Simpsons, who lost all of his riches spending it on Fabergé eggs, then breaking them in the alleyway. But that’s not this! Nay! This is the works of a Chinese magician artist by the name of Ma Jun. It is his trade to recreate objects of little worth in Porcelain, painting them with fine colors, creating in them a value far beyond the dreams of the original.

Below you’ll find a sampling of his newer and older works.

Artist Ma Jun (b. 1974) graduated from the Beijing Central Academy of Fine Arts where he studied sculpture. In the works you see below from 2006-2007, the pieces were made in Jindezhen, China, a center for Chinese Porcelain production for over 1000 years. According to L. A. Galerie Lothar Albrecht, the application of traditional patterns to replicated objects of little worth both shows the power of the patterns, them giving worth to anything they be cast upon, but it also demonstrates, however, “how arbitrarily these patterns can be utilized, as there no longer exists any meaningful interplay between object and decoration.”*

These comments come from a show displayed at the L. A. Galerie Lothar Albrecht in which they presented a duo show of Ma Jun and Huang Min, both of them graduates of the Beijing Central Academy of Fine Arts. This exhibition was titled “Transforming China” and took place March 2 until May 12, 2007.

From an article about Ma Jun by Alexandra Chang under the title “The Future of China: Ma Jun”, Ma Jun is quoted as saying, more or less: “I’m just raising the question: While our lifestyle is changed by these products, what will our future be like? Will China, the country that appreciates china so much, lose its own aesthetics in china?” So! Veddy interesting.

Next you’ll see some pieces that were displayed at the Krampf Gallery in New York. In the gallery at the bottom of the post, you’ll see some rather small images of how the gallery was set up so you can see size references. All of this was displayed at a show at Krampf Gallery under the name “Ma Jun Pop Dynasty” that took place Feb 15th – March 15th 2009.

Next you will see an image of some amazing slightly-crushed cans, painted in a manner very similar to the technique of Ma Jun. So close, in fact, that they’ve been mistaken for his works. In reality though, these particular cans are the work of artist Lei Xue, who seems to operate in both China and Germany.

Ma Jun! Someone find him! He needs to keep making these things! It is a demand I have. They’re something that’d be difficult to own. Perhaps a single can or bottle would be reasonable, but they’re so breakable! Art museums, I’m looking at you to preserve these.

Hot dogs! Oh my goodness hotdogs! Coney Island Dogs. That’s what’s up. We’ve got a place around here (Minneapolis, Minnesota) called Uncle Frankey’s. Perhaps you’ve heard of it. They make amazing Coney Island Dogs. Supposedly they’re better on the REAL island, but who knows! These people do. And when I say these people, I mean all the people who took the photos included in the super insanely huge World Famous Design Junkies Coney Island Sign Explorer Collection. Oh wow the signs. Look at them all!

Ah yes, the island. All of these photos are straight off the island. Coney Island was the biggest park in the USA between 1880 and World War II, but now it’s sorta… fading… but that’s alright! It’s still insane! It’s a fast collection of fantastically clean painted signs and erratic, calculated oddities. And of course, the lights at night, or as we love to call signs of just this nature: Night Type.

BEHOLD, and be held… by the excellence.

Ironically, “Coney Island hot dog” describes a product that is unknown in its namesake, Coney Island, New York, where hot dogs (usually called “franks” from frankfurter) are traditionally made only from beef and served plain or with sauerkraut on a bun without other adornment except the availability of mustard, which at Nathan’s was applied by the customer. The only reason for the name is the generic hot dog’s origins in Coney Island, where it said to have been invented by Charles Feltman in 1867, who put a Vienna sausage in a roll and called it “Coney Island Red Hots.” Some people, unsure of its ingredients, called it a hot dog. Different references claim that the locals thought the sandwiches reminded them of Feltman’s ever-present companion, a dachshund, called a wiener dog even back then,and the term hot dog became a popular term. – WEEKII

Oh man I HATE IT when people are passive aggressive supreme. So much. So much do I hate such a thing. But I’ll tell you what I like. Green White and Black. It’s a ton of materials, like stickers, sticky-notes, and badges that allow YOU to make the most of your passive aggressive nature in just the most fantastic sticky-designish way possible!

Blame designer Ben Bours.

Complaint Department is a kit of materials that facilitate passive aggressive complaining. Instead of confronting someone, why not just use a witty sticker to let everyone know your grievances?

This is the first day of the rest of your life! It is you, future person, who has the future in your futuristic, super dirty hands! This is a poster from a brilliant bloke from Brooklyn named Roland Tiangco. He, Tiangco, and a kind hand model, Yoshie Hozumi, present this fabulous interactive poster. And I don’t mean interactive computer simulation. I mean getting your hands dirty with real ink and dirt! Physical interactivity! The nerve!

*NOTE Roland Tiangco is not a bloke in the sense that he is from England, instead I only used the word bloke because that’s generally right, and it rhymed there in the sentence.

A poster the recipient completes by revealing spot-varnished type with hands made dirty by handling the poster. This is the first of a series of posters.

Get your hands dirty, bloggers, and more importantly(?): get you hands dirty designers!

Though we’ve had some mighty fine pencils and pencil work before, these are just cake-eating tops. Found at a positively lovely estate sale with many graphically inspired objects, these pencils just sang a fine tune to the eyes of yours truly. Behold this colorful pack of pencils from your old friends at Mongol.

Nice yes? They stand up under their own power! Very nice.

These pencils sit pretty in the World Famous Design Junkies packaging department, not to mention dust off nicely in the vast array of lovely bits and pieces of rummage sale.

So there I am, just minding my own business up on the top chunk of Wisconsin, looking around at some stuff at an estate sale. And bam. I find out that this is the estate of the late great painting and illustration artist James O. Burnley. He’d lived in this area of Wisconsin (Hudson, to be exact) for many years, having painted up until his last (I saw his final work; it was incomplete!) Amongst the regular estate sale treasures were several sketchbooks, drawings, and paintings. And there, there it was. My treasure. My nun. She sat upon the shelf unassumingly, just praying for me to pick her up.

So I did! For twenty dollars.

The woman in charge of keeping everything in order in the part of the sale said she found the painting in the basement amongst the piles and piles of unused picture frames. She said the extended family of Burnley believed it to be one of his earlier paintings because of the way he signed his name. Goodness gracious!

Here’s some more info about Burnley from the gallery that represented him and continues to sell prints of his work:

James O. Burnley was born in 1914 in Kansas City, Missouri. While a student at Paseo High School he developed his interest in art. His art teacher recognized his talent and, to encourage his pursuit of art, gave him her art supplies.

Burnley received a scholarship to the Kansas City Art Institute from 1932 to 1936. He won a national scholarship to the prestigious Art Students League in New York City where he continued to develop his skills and technique. He continued to live and work in New York City as a commercial artist until he was drafted in the United States Army on June 18, 1941.

Burnley’s Army career spanned over two decades and three wars. During his Army days Burnley painted as an avocation and while on leave. Retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1966 he moved to Hudson, Wisconsin where he had been tied since his first visit in 1927. He built his home with studio and began painting immediately and regularly.

He traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe, painting wherever he went. He completed numerous commissions for private and corporate collections. His works include portraits, still lifes, landscapes, seascapes and modern art. In response to the demand for his artwork he licensed The Riverside Studio Gallery to create very high quality artist proof prints of selected paintings. This is the work of a pre-modern painter who had the skills of a post-modern fabuloso. I’ll be framing this up by my Kaws toys and design book collection. It’ll fit right in!

Welcome to the Loring Park neighborhood on the South West corner of downtown Minneapolis. I’m about to live in this area! Very exciting. While exploring the streets, I peeped upon this lovely sign. Thinking it might have been a nice happening, a silly mistake of doing the numbers first and thinking of the letters second, I looked upon the other side, then the other sign, and LO! They were all basically made with the same method!

Experience the timeless world of ball-point pen wielding SHOHEI. He is an artist from somewhere in Japan and he’s been putting pics up on the internet for about 2 years. Being as how it’s unbelievable to some folks that he’s done these illustrations with a pen, he’s got several videos to back up his party – these videos include the picture above called “Alice in Sweets.” Shohei’s work ranges from the cute to the pornographic- several of these pictures are not safe for work! So keep an eye on that.

Then we’ve got him drawing 白痴ランド Idiot Land and お菓子の国のアリス Alice in Sweets : aka “Alice sarounded by Japanese snack(candy) package charaters”

Shohei’s collection is also called IDIOT LAND. Undeniably weird. If you go further into his work, you see that he’s experimented with a couple other formats (other than black pen + red spot colors) – but he always comes back to the amazing formula. Would not mind adding this fellows work to the ol’ art collection. A top gun in anyone’s illustration category.

Welcome to Idiot Land!

Polka dotted milk comes from polka dotted cows. The same with milk shakes. This is an example of a truck with a branding that has been painted and repainted to maintain the worth of the contents. Even though the paint may fade, the contents remain fresh. The logo is more powerful than its execution, but because it is so SO powerful, it looks super lovely even when damaged and deteriorated.

I’d like to give a shout-out to mah main hoomiee Justin McKinley for clicking these hot pics up in Hastings Minnesota. The towns in this state are always fantastic. The states of the towns are revealing. Drink milk. It keeps the bones strong. CORRECTION: these pics were shot down in River Falls Wisconsin – also a pretty neat town. I just went to Wisconsin last week to a couple of estate sales. Good place to buy neat stuff.

Welcome to protester paradise (if there is such a thing.) We live in the future, where a country in a situation like Iran can communicate with the entire world on a neu-personal level. The situation is terrible, but the potential for positive change is fantastic. Message to News Organizations:

I have received a number of requests to use these photographs from multiple news organizations.

These are not my photographs. They have been collected from Twitter and other social networks. They are being gathered together in the Flickr collection for the convenience of the press and others and to ensure that there is an additional depository for these images in the event that their original location is compromised by hostile action.

As they are not mine, I do not have the ability to authorize their use. However, one major news network has decided that; “We recognize the risks people are taking to get the pictures out and intend to use as many of them as editorially appropriate. We will not currently require formal license agreements considering the situation.”

I would invite your news organization to reach a similar decision and to use all photographs that do not contain a watermark, or annotation, indicating that they were taken by professionals.

The individuals that took these photos, risked their lives to do so and it is incongruous that having done so they would not wish these photographs to be used by the world media. In light of this I beg your news organization to use these photographs and to disseminate them as wide as possible. Constant press coverage by the international media is the only thing preventing a massacre in Iran. The re-publication of these photographs will help to save lives. There is a clear moral duty in this context. Be human.

A common message on signs, usually written in Arabic, reads as thus: “Our green vote was not your black name” or “My green vote was not your black name.” Another is “We break the idol not the glasses.” The most commonly used phrase is “Where Is My Vote?” or “Where Are Their Votes?” – the images that look like they were rendered to be used in a viral manner, well, that’s probably what they are there for.

Behold the strangeties of one, Sylvain Euriot. Every one (I should say nearly every one) of Eruiot’s illustrations has an open, gawking mouth. So strange is this world of slackjaws that you’ve just got to visit his daily updater and his online portfolio. A small cross-section of his sketches and etc below.

Welcome back to the dirty side of design. I have a soft spot in my heart for hand-painted signs, especially if they’re made for a flea market / antique sale / flea market / garage sale. In this case, we’re up North in Wadena Minnesota at their town flea market spot, and cute signs abound. My favorite is pictured above: a Slow Children sign transformed into a notification for nearby deals; that social event as old as the hills.

Speaking of hills, this location is near the Smokey Hills area. A place I recommend noone visit if they’re into anything other than roads, small-tree forest, and the occasional squirrel, deer, or bear.

No joke! That graffiti painted on the “Observe and Report” billboard says Fuck Cops. What divine excellence hath brought us such a tidbit. See Royal Pet in Uptown Minneapolis for a nice half-a-bath. There’s some doggahs in the bath and some doggahs in the window. And ont he other half of the window is the rest of the lettering. What a solution for a replaced window! There’s a cute puppy in the window below, you must take a peek at it.

It’s not a TOTAL free-for-all, but definitely a nicely-spirited free-for-all for people who are kind enough to ask for permission. Here we are at Uptown’s own Intermedia Arts. See below for an amazing display of spray-can skills, spills, and layer upon layer upon layer of thrills.

What do you think of dat? One of the more intelligent arguments I’ve ever heard on the public graffiti front is that the city provides it’s citizens with basketball courts, tennis courts, playgrounds, etc. for people to gather and enjoy their community with. People want to play basketball, so when they made their own hoops on their own garages, the city said hey, here’s a place where everyone can gather for that. Togetherness.

So there I am driving down the road. There I am. And I realize that the best and greatest van ever may be driving just one lane to my left. So I pull over to that lane, and yes, yes there it is, the official Amego Glass van. It is all hand-painted. My only regret is that I could only see and take some pics of the back.
