Yes there are some times when its appropriate to draw sports figures, believe it or not! The golden, romantic age of sports heros is over – Michael Jordan and Bo Jackson do not play sports anymore. But here’s a couple of women who love sports men so much they draw them with felt pens & markers to this day! These illustrators are named Sandra & Annika and they go by the team name YAWN.

YAWN means YEAH! AWESOME! WOW! NICE! What a weird thing. Yawn is like a yawn, boring, crappy, tired, but then it means something amazing here.

It’s just totally clever, isn’t it?! It is!

An ongoing project. There are times when we tend to like certain stuff and then draw it almost obsessively. This is obviously a time when we liked sports guys. It all started when Annika wanted to get a football helmet…

Look around! Find a few sports figures! My favorite drawing is of the USA swimmers from the Beijing winter olympics MICHAEL PHELPS FOREVER.

Oh holy crap Moustache Bandanas. Remember the early 90′s? You couldn’t wear a bandana, not any bandana at all, because you’d get shot. Red bandanas were for the Bloods, blue bandanas were for the Crips, and purple were for the Grimaces. You’d get so many burgers thrown at you. So many. But you will NOT get held up and stabbed when you’re sporting one of the bad boys you’ll see in this post. No sir.

These moustaches aka mustaches are made by Minneapolis’s own Burlesque Design. You can wear them. You NEED to wear them. As you can see above in that photo of Sarah Silverman at this year’s Flatstock, wearing the moustache is amazing fun. Amazing fun indeed. Free moustache rides.

Every fantastic photo I ever heard of had at least two good elements in it. If it had three, well hell, I’d be all over it. All up around it holdin it in my hands, ready with a frame and a matte, ready to put that thang up on my wall. But look at me ramblin! What are we talkin about here for real? That man and his puppy. That man, the other men in this post and one lady. All of em found on a road trip from Las Vegas to the Salton Sea.

The hairs are my favorites but I like also how the leaves are sometimes the hairs too. I like the hairs most, but the leaves too are excellent. And I’m always a fan of when the negative numbers shine through for real.

WHOA watch where you throw that “furry” word there, this ain’t not cosplay. This is the world of puppetry. To be taken seriously. These are basically the guys who co-headlined a concert with Spinal Tap. These are the guys who make puppets! Such lovely puppets specifically for the high definition generation! They say so!

Here at the Furry Puppet studio, we believe that every puppet has a soul;
a certain richness and warmth that’s reminiscent of classic puppetry.
So we’ve taken the traditional skills and the fundamentals of classic puppet
building and revamped them for the new era: the era of high definition.

Ohmygosh! From foam sculpture to fur substitutes, this particular team of puppetrists are the doctor Frankensteins of the marionette world! Wait. That’s not puppets. These guys need a hand, not some sticks. It’s frightening how realistically amazing these amalgamations become at the fingertips of founder Zach Buchman and director of production Maria Gurevich. They’re craftsmen (craftspeople?) just as much as they are artists, just as much as they are designers. They work with the people who want puppets to create the puppet they need to their exact specifications.

The best part is that these people are thriving. In a world of animation, perfect special effects, and mile-a-second internetting, these hands-on-interactive specialists are doing really really well. I applaud thee!

So you remember the cover of the New York Times where there were two giant fingers crushing a red gummy United States? That was made by none other than the artist we’ve got here today: Kevin Van Aelst. He’s got big ideas and he illustrates them teeny tiny or just basically small items he sees everyday. From a keyboard made out of children’s letter blocks to a USB video tape, here’s to QUITE the illustrator!

My color photographs consist of common artifacts and scenes from everyday life, which have been rearranged, assembled, and constructed into various forms, patterns, and illustrations. The images aim to examine the distance between the ‘big picture’ and the ‘little things’ in life—the banalities of our daily lives, and the sublime notions of identity and existance. While the depictions of information–such as an EKG, fingerprint, map or anatomical model–are unconventional, the truth and accuracy to the illustrations are just as valid as more traditional depictions. This work is about creating order where we expect to find randomness, and also hints that the minutiae all around us is capable of communicating much larger ideas.

Splendid mathematical manifestations galore!

Below you will find a collection of peculiar objects, all illustrations by our man in question. You will see a ying-yang made of Oreo cookie: this is easy to understand. A little bit further down the specialized understanding map is the pumpkin carved with a Beta-Carotene Molecule, or the cake decorated with a dragon curve. But you don’t need any degree or specialized study to see the beauty in these objects, especially when you have such perfect splendidness as the logarithmic milk spill.

Everything that ever mattered! I was peeking around concept art today and happened upon the name Drew Struzan. That guy did a lot of artwork for Star Wars… oh and he did Fievel Goes West… and Big Trouble in Little China, Blade Runner, Harry Potter, and BACK TO THE FUTURE. Holy crap this guy did everything in the danged world. Below you will find a collection of Drew Struzan’s works, everything from the Police Academy series to Arnold Schwarzenegger in William Shakespear’s King Lear!

Secondly, Shakespear vs Schwarzenegger: check it out. Struzan was contacted by Universal Pictures to do artwork for a new version of King Lear, not for an actual release, but for a cardboard standup which would appear in the San Diego havoc scene of Jurrasic Park II: The Lost World. Seen for just a moment before the T-rex crushed bus smashes through the video rental store window. – the original artwork still survives.

So it seems there’s a hive-mind sort of thing going on in the world right now, a hive with bees swarming around the idea that shooting film is the same as shooting a gun. Such lovely nonsense. Today we have a contribution from the utterly colorful fashion photographer from Istanbul and Miami (WOW) Akif Hakan Celebi. This set is a CHASE set between two rival and rather well-dressed film shooters out to get one another. See who wins!

It’s called “Diary of a Serial Shooter” and it was made for the 2009 Istanbul Fashion Film Festival. Done with models Aysu Ergin and Elif Domanic.

It takes quite a fabulous photographer to make something so high as the fashion these ladies are wearing and bring it down to the streets of Turkey where they then fight with old video cameras. Who does that! Hakan does I suppose. Every one of these photos is fabulous. Take a peek at the battle below!

It’s a project called “Close Up and Private.” It is a super-up-n-close exploration of modern style of what I’d call the “hipster generation.” You get the feeling from these photographs that these people own vinyl records and probably don’t play them very often. Clothing in these photos are from LOTS of different places, amongst them Comme des Garçons, Barneys Boutiques, Polo, Experimental Jetset – the shirt for 2K/Gingham (Beatles), Ray Ban, Vans, Adidas, D&G – Dolce&Gabbana hello! – + more I can’t recognize or type n such.

The above picture is my favorite. Looks like there’s a place for a little photo to be installed in that tie, doesn’t it? If not, there should be. Dibs!

Ho! Behold photography in its glory day – today!

There is a band of wild screenprinters in this city who quite commonly throw all their ink in one pot to support one hot cause or another. In today’s episode, we’ve got “Sweet Hair,” an event which takes place at the all-posterish Minneapolis art hot spot Art Minion. This particular amalgamation of paper and ink is tossed in support of Locks of Love. Ten percent of all profit made from these hair posters goes toward just such a voluminous cause. The Sweet Hair Poster Show kicks off this summer as 37 Minneapolis based artists come together for the sweetest, hairiest event of the year. All prints are hair-inspired, handmade and created just for this one-time-only event. Not only will some of Minneapolis’ premier poster artists be showcased here, but thanks to Mezzanine Salon, hair will actually be cut and styled during the show’s opening reception. Sweet Hair opens on Saturday, June 13th from 7-10pm at the Art Minion Gallery, nestled away in North East Minneapolis overlooking the Mississippi River. This exhibition is free and open to the public. DJ Rambo Salinas and DJ Talk Radio will be spinning music all evening. Artwork purchased the night of the show will be accompanied with a discount to Frame Ups Custom Framing. The show will be up for one month following the opening reception. 10% of poster sales and ALL pony tails collected for Sweet Hair will be given to Locks of Love.

Visit them or I will punch you in the nose! This is a conversation had by two fellows that had an amazing idea. Tom & Shaun sittin in yer window, doin all kinds of stuff. For a full week(?) they’ll be sitting in this window display, doing all sorts of stuff via internet users all over the world – telling them what to do! And they aren’t half bad at typography and the like, are they? They’re totally awesome.

Check the cool color combos! I wonder why these fellows are shaking hands? Ask yourself, how many photographers are there that take brightly colored, strange subject matter photos are there these days?

I’ve been convinced vengeance against the world of advertising, but when colors get this vibrant, how can any decent fellow resist? Nina doesn’t make men’s shoes, but I want some of these, just to put them on the wall, just to have them. Wait no, I just want the light sticks. Or the whole poster! Who has a lock kit?

These images are the product of Lindsey Robyn Gice, who titles herself an Art Director, Designer, and Strategist. Hot dog! I wonder if she snagged any of the shoes while at the photo shoot? Miss Gice, any word?
