There comes a time in space every once in a while where none other than GOD himself grants us thustly a favor of time and need for intricacy. It is during these times that we’re allowed to take that time and create that intricacy for the greater good of fine art and design. This is one of those times, pre 1861 United States of America, in a time when money design was needed and the only defense against counterfeiting was high amazing detail, as done by engravers with the most fantastic of skill.

What we’ve got here is a small collection of pre-1861 engravings done for money around the USA, all of these part of the British Museum Archive. Strange, yes? Take a look in their archive site there for a mastertastic collection of the finest treasures from the entire globe and throughout history.

But do that AFTER you take a peek through these images, all of them so fine. And if you’re an illustrator, designer, or artist, hope and pray for the opportunity to take such an amount of time as these folks certainly did use to make such timeless works. What a gift.

Mister James Marshall, aka DALEK, is a master of lines, color, and little green space men. He’s been perfecting his sharpness and colortastic explosigazms since he first spewed forth this Space Monkey in 1995. In 2007, he began using his real name and had a flabjabulous show at Jonathan Levine gallery. From there, the Monkey only appeared here and there, if at all. In these 5 new paintings we’ve got here in the gallery below, there’s no monkeys in the least bit! The power remains. Perhaps they’re just hiding.

Since I began studying this modern art segment about 6 years ago or so, Dalek’s always, ALWAYS been in the list of the “cool guys” to keep up on news with. Always he’d be in the hypercolor limelight.

And he’s not done, no, no way!

Italy, Netherland, Amsterdam, all the good places. Thats were these geometry-loving graffiti artists operate. I name KURZ and CT because they’re the easiest to identify here without knowing the names of everyone in each of these crew paintings. A few more are listed below. What’s important is that these are utterly splendiferous, a real testament to the state of things on… the streets… because these things don’t just take five minutes to toss up. These aren’t bombs, that’s for friggin sure boy howdy.

Lots of these images can be traced back to one site, a fantastic site for European graffiti photography: http://www.ekosystem.org/ – a lot of the photographers will remain anonymous here because of the illegality of even being in the area of these masterpieces, if I ever met them, I’d have to shake their hand SO MUCH because these are magnificent. It’s an important sort of photography getting the pics of the illegal arts like these. It’s dangerous and very often one cannot take credit for one’s own work.

So thumbs up and high fives to them.

The work you’re about to see in this gallery is very geometric, flat, hard, tough. It’s like wild style never happened.

The most excellent sculpture I ever built in art school was one I made out of free wood glue and wood scraps from the scrap wood bin. All free, all A+. That’s sort of, in a way, what’s going on here with these newest works of wood and paint magic by Shawn Smith. Plywood, acrylic paint, and sometimes ink. That’s what these masterworks are made of. The heads of animals is what they replicate. The eyeballs of the elite are what they attract.

Your dollars is what they HOPE to attract. Buy them, gallery owners. I must see more! The only way for an artist to have the amount of time it takes to construct these things is if they’ve got the cash to eat dinner! So gallery owners, I say again, support Shawn Smith! This whole wood chippies glued together idea is fantastic!

The gallery below is in chronological order by year. Each year, starting in 2005, there are several works which were produced throughout the year. The gallery is ordered top to bottom, the newest ones at the bottom. Then after the gallery of individual projects, you’re going to see a set of images that all look alike, all of them with buzzards attacking an office. This is the bigger project of Smith’s dealing with these woodies. It’s called Vicious Venue and it’s a total bird attack!

Vicious Venue My recent work explores my interest in birds of prey as a source of conceptual inspiration and analogy. I am fascinated by vultures and the visceral way most people react to them. For my exhibition at Lawndale Art Center, I asked the question, “What would a digital vulture eat if it was somehow trapped inside this reality?” Vicious Venue is a sculptural installation consisting of a group of life-size pixelated vultures devouring an analog office full of obsolete technologies (like a typewriter, rolodex, and a rotary phone). The viewer becomes an intruder into the space, as if they are stumbling into the middle of the ongoing carnage as the vultures pick the office’s carcass clean. The title of the exhibition, Vicious Venue, refers to the double meaning of “venue” as both a place, and a group of vultures.

Scary. Again Vicious Venue is at the bottom of the gallery in it’s entirety.

I might have to start a “moments in brilliance” category for this package cause there’s only one pic, but it’s magfantriffic! Made by the designer Daniel Costas over in Guarda-Pontevedra, Spain. It’s a package of chocolates! Employing the excellent concept of one whole being made up of a bunch of delicious parts, this box is smart AND pleasing in a bunch of ways. It’s made for the Visual Trans group, a company that focuses on… business… software… solutions? Idunno. Something like that. Chocolate!

Renaissance people are amazing. Andrea Hayward is a person such as that. Designer, artist, maybe even architect! Hayward is a master at whatever project in need to creative interpretation that comes her way. And what’v we got here? Keys. Lots of keys. The project you see above is called “Pure Gold” and is the newest in what I hope is a long series of key-grid installations, the first of which was just done late 2009. Upcycling yay!

There’s three projects here, all by Andrea Hayward, all done in the past year, the newest one being “Pure Gold.” The middle project is an untitled one, one I’d call “USED / TNAW” – this one was exhibited at a show called “UpCycling: Recuperating Past Lives” that took place May 8th – May 23rd, 2009 at the Tartar Gallery in Toronto Canada. Then the last, the oldest project is “Come Up To My Room.”

This last project has the most interesting concept, if you ask me, as it’s installed along a staircase and invites the user to interact with this subtitle: “the trade a key/leave a key/spare a key” and “Come Inside / don’t call me again.” Being able to take home part of any sort of installation art is always going to get a thumbs up from me. Love to collect. Love to have.

And how about the use of a single object in duplicate? The collecting and arranging and sometimes even the displaying of objects that’ve got a common denominator is one of the most important activities a designer can do to keep their skills at a peak. It’s next to creation in it’s importance. Having collected a stack of posters, and having practiced making posters for some time, these are the tenants of the house of excellent design.

Poster design, anyway.

Peek at these keys, for they are the keys to a fabulous installation project with a heavily amazing project with lots of potential to spawn beyond itself.

When I first remember the idea being thrown around that someday we’d have little to no print, that being a world where we’d be able to transmit all of our ideas digitally, I remember the word being “awesome!” there’ll be no waste! Right? Do you remember having this conversation with everyone? No need to waste ink, just use your computer to get all your info, save the world! But now we’re getting there. We’re maybe even within reaching space of eliminating paper and print in a major way, but wait! says we, wait a second! What about making posters and handbills, what about the neatness of having a piece of print in your hands? And what about all those hockey cards?

Artist Laren DiCioccio addresses this all in a big handful of teeny, tiny swoops with her extended “sewn” works.

Your brain will benefit from a read of DiCioccio’s artist statement:

My work investigates the physical/tangible beauty of commonplace mass-produced media-objects, most recently: the newspaper, magazines, office papers and writing pads, plastic bags, 35 mm slides. These media are becoming obsolete, replaced by the invisible efficiency of various technologies. In some cases, this transition is a good thing- faster transmission and distribution of information, streamlined systems, openness to user input, less waste. But a hole is left behind by the disappearance of these everyday objects. What will happen when we no longer touch information? When newsprint does not rub off onto our fingertips? When we no longer write longhand?

The tedious handiwork and obsessive care I employ to create my work aims to remind the viewer of these simple but intimate pieces of everyday life and to provoke a pang of nostalgia for the familiar physicality of these objects.

What you’re about to view are the contents of two projects by the one known as DiCioccio. The first in the gallery is the “sewnnews” project. This is a project done over daily news articles, the New York Times to be exact – this project has been going on for several years now, only put onto the internet very recently. The newest works are from 2010.

Then you’re going to see a bunch of slides. This second project is known as “35mm sewnslides” and is done in a very similar vein as the news. But while the paper is sewn into a casing of hand-embroidered cotton muslin, the slides are instead embroidered directly onto the fragile bridal organza. In both cases, the final product has threads left to hang out in the wind. Loving, lovely strands of color.

Fragility, nostalgia, ritualistic beauty.

Hey child, get out your powerful magic player of the music. That’s right, it’s the boombox. It’s the thing you get out and put a tape in there in the tape deck and BAM, you’ve got such a sound you can bring with you and blast all over everyone’s face in the streets. And all it takes to run it is 12 double-D batteries. Get some batteries! And look at this fabulous photo project by Lyle Owerko. It’s called, appropriately, “The Boombox Project” and he even whipped up an excellent nutshelled history of the box too! It’s all here, all of it.

So this fantastic artist, photographer, designer, cool guy Lyle Owerko took a whole load of photos of fantastic boomboxes and here they are in this classic set! And from his massive research bank comes this little diddy too!

A Visual Timeline of the Era of the Boombox

Exactly when the term ‘boombox’ hit the streets is not known for sure. In the United States, department stores apparently began using the term in marketing and advertising as early as 1983. Street slang linguists pin the term down at 1981, and define the boombox as “a large portable radio and tape player with two attached speakers.” Initially, it became identified with certain segments of urban society, hence adopting epithetic nicknames, like ‘ghetto blaster,’ and ‘jam box.’ But as the masses began to embrace these gargantuan conglomerations of electronics, lights and chrome plated gadgetry an inherent form of portable entertainment and expression was born. The boombox as it has evolved is now an icon of popular culture, it has been referenced by rockers, poppers, hip-hoppers, and graffers alike. It is a symbol of rebellion and a way to shout your message at the system. Turn up the volume on your boombox, whatever the size, and let the capstan wheels of the tape deck drive a favorite mix-tape to life… As the defiant voice of punk rock legend, Joe Strummer sang “This is radio clash using audio ammunition…”

The grids, the circles, the rectangles. These fabulous boxes of pure energy deserve all the looks and glances they get. And when they’re blasting fantastic mixtapes and such, they’re even better. But they’re also fantastically lovely just to peek at, so let’s do some peekin.

And I bet you’d be pretty pumped up if you could do something neat with these images, right? I bet you would. Incase you aren’t aware, one of the many things WFDJ is is a hunter. We, we are hunters. On the run. Seeking and stabbing all over these internets, cultivating and growing. And where does that lead ME sometimes? To designed magnificence that sometimes does not have a name on it. Case in point: the five images you are about to see. Each of them is a sports chart. For archiving purposes, I’ve titled them “Charts of Sports Excellence.” And we’re looking for the person who made em. So if you’re that person, step yourself forward. Or if you just KNOW, shoot us in the right direction.

As you glance upon each of these, keep in mind how true to life they really are. All of these things are happening at once. So many math equations, such magnificence. Michael Jordan. Muhammad Ali. Whoever these other people are. All masters. Masters of math.

Devour this design. It’s fun. It’s fabulous.

Let me tell you how to get your stuff all shooting in every direction on the internet. Take one thing. In this case, it’s a keyboard. Then you need another thing. Think hard about this one. It has to relate to the first item in some way, and in these modern times, it’d better be ironic. In this case, the second item is skateboard wheels and trucks.

Make you a skateboard keyboard.

This particular skateboard keyboard is called a “Skatekeyboard” and is made by Tobias Leingruber. It was shown a couple weeks ago at the 2009 Black River Festival. And now it lies in wait under a waterfall until the next time it is called to be part of Voltron.

Not for use on the streets. Only for office use.

It’s a toy that teaches kids to become font designers! Look out world, soon there’ll be an army of extremely detail oriented youngsters on the horizon. This thing right here is called Letterboxes. It’s a simple cardboard form with printing on it that folds up to a box with black shapes that when combined in the right (or wrong!) combinations, create letters and numbers. It’s got a companion font with it, too!

To promote the idea of producing this learning tool on a larger scale, the designers have released this free font! [LETTERBOX] OTF format – for use on non-commercial projects only!

Letterboxes Children of a young age play with small wooden blocks to learn the alphabet. Letters lead to words that lead into sentences and so on. Our oversized kraft boxes reintroduce the alphabet not as 26 distinct letters, but as the result of combining geometric parts. The 4-inch cubes may be viewed and stacked from any direction, creating unexpected shapes and letterforms. The boxes are made from recycled cardboard, delivered flat (assembling is part of the fun). Posters from the depths of ivory tower reality. These poster images (and actual posters you can hold) are made by designer Michæl Paukner. They’re infographics, but what’s more, they’re astronomical. And not just in outer space. Everything from the godliness of creating outlines for a folded box to the divinity of the golden mean. Made gorgeous. Made poster form in the style Paukner sees fit.

Above and below in slightly larger form I’ve placed several of the posters that are a bit nearer and dearer to my heart than the rest, the rest you can view in the thumbnailed gallery.

It’s important to bring the heat with heck-a creative energy. The one you see before you’s made by architect Nick Doermann and it’s got amazing folds and letters and symbols.

Yes, architect, yes. Even you benefit from the magic of typography. Witness as it unfolds into different compositions and composes itself into different additional fabulousnesses. It’s a card, its a banner, it’s a poster!

This is a bunch of photos from inside the airport in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They’re snapped by me, author designer Chris Burns, as the first mission on this amazing fact-finding mission in Albany, NY, and the surrounding areas. These photos are taken with the most extremely specific mission in mind: photograph a photo every 5 seconds or less.

It almost worked. Results below!

So it seems that there’s going to be a book coming out soon that’s a photo recounting of the Glow In The Dark tour that happened a year and a few months ago. The tour featured Kanye West as the headliner, Rihanna, Lupe Fiasco, and N.E.R.D.. It was pretty neat. People at the concert were told basically that if they took photos they’d be shot with lazers and chopped into bits. But we did it anyway. Here’s a bunch of lovely colors for you.

Some of the more flashy pictures you’ll see are actually of the crowd (because it was fabulous to see a sold-out arena all making the same hand movements) and of N.E.R.D. who just had one giant long LCD screen with lightening, water, disco balls, fire, everything going across it in flashing lights.

A couple of Rihanna, a couple of Lupe Fiasco, and a bunch of Kanye’s spaceship adventures.

Kanye, if you’re reading this: If you’d like these pictures to be taken down, just click and shout, otherwise take note of how medium-quality they are and see how it’ll more than likely sell some more books rather than hurt the movement of the pages.

Not the kind of star map that you use to find Steve Buscemi’s house, but the kind you use to find the “Artie” constellation. As the city of Paris is often or at least sometimes called La ville lumière aka City of Lights, the wonderful design mind that goes by the name Clémentine Tantet decided to see it in space. And what’s more identifying of a city than it’s train map? So thus is this: a map of the Paris Underground made into a map of the stars!

Re-identifying a map is a task that should be given to every design student at some point in their lives, and even more than one time if they’re up to it. Mapping and re-mapping are extremely basic skills that every designer, big and small, should have always. One must be able to identify the components of a system, map them in a way that makes them simplest to dissemble and understand. For realsies!

The light city | Poster: Paris has many nicknames but its most famous is «la ville-lumière» (literally «the light city»; most often translated as «the city of lights»). I decided to show it, representing the paris undergroung map like a stars map.

A mister David Lasnier, designer and 3D pro, has replicated Marseille. In an extended stay and discovery mission on the streets of France’s largest commercial port, Lasnier exercised his skill on the ol’ 3D rendering engine to replicate iconic items he found all around the city. What a fabulous set of virtual items he’s conjured up!

It’s an interesting time in history for designers of all sorts. What tools do you need? That’s the question. Do you become a jack of all trades, master of none? Or is learning how to use every different tool the only way to become a true master?

From the looks of his portfolio, Lasnier‘s mastered several tools which are the following (and if not these, something comparable): Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, some sort of 3D rendering and animation engine(s), a pencil, a stamp, iPod touch (plus finger), some lovely video editing software, and the internets.

That’s hefty.

See the Marseille set below. This post is part of the World Famous Design Junkies 3D category. Not just renderings, not just sculptures, but a big fat giant category full of basically everything past the second D.

Noone can resist that title. This is a project by one Emanuele Nardoni, a photographer from Milan who likes to hit the road and the airplane and basically go on the photo outings that you WISH you could go on. This one’s set in Tokyo and I believe in the surrounding areas, and it is titled, yes, “Made in Japan.” And it’s lovely. Just fantastical. My favorite photo is the one above “This is My Art” because although it’s sort of totally self-referential, juvenile, silly, goofy, I think it’s right on cue. I wonder if it’s tile, sticker, wood, or what?

Brand flippin new works from the design / art collective FAILE. The works contained in this post are dubbed (by Faile) to be the Wood Paintings set and will be formally introduced next week at FIAC art fair in Paris with Perry Rubenstein Gallery. Faile’s going to be represented by Perry Rubenstein in the United States from now on, their first show to be some time mid-2010. This set of fine art pieces is the first bunch to be produced and shown in corroboration with PRG. And they’re HUGE.

As you can see, these pieces are made out of blocks. The insane amount of work that’s gone into each little tiny big of these constructions is staggering from a craftsman’s point of view, then there’s the lovely look of it all. Absolutely museum-grade. These are so giant and so fantastic I’d feel terrible owning them outside of a gallery situation. These amalgamations need to be seen by as many eyes as there are type-loving minds in the world.

First things first, we are proud to announce Perry Rubenstein Gallery will be representing Faile here in the US. We have plans to do a solo show with the gallery in mid-2010. We will be debuting new works with Perry Rubenstein at FIAC in Paris next week. The fair opens on the 22nd of October and runs through the 25th of October. Are you kidding me? Lazer etched, aged leather “print.” What a lovely process! I’d mention that I don’t agree with the use of the hide of an animal for a bit of design/artwork, but I just ate some steak tacos, and my blood is too thick for Florida, where these are from. Another neat thing about this print is that it’s designed by a design collective: YASLY, which is comprised of musicians, leather craftsman, letterpress artisans, house wives and carpenters. Heck yah! I’m a carpenter too, nice to meet you!

Note: Because the leather is reclaimed and hand aged, there are imperfections and marks in the leather.

This is part of the aesthetic.

Reclaimed means it was already chopped off the cow when they got to it. So, no worries, right? This print is part of the group’s brand new series “Dawn of Man” which contains similar artworks and designworks and a book.

Peek them out, but first, peek this 18″ x 24″ work out in the gallery below. It goes by the title “Second Breath” and I hear it’s very, very nice.

When’s the last time you did a puzzle? I mean like when’s the last time you put a whole freaking puzzle together? Have you ever wondered what it’d be like to take a bunch of similar-sized puzzles, slapping them together without mercy? Oh my goodness that’d be a mess. Or would it?

Artist / designer Gerhard Mayer thought of that. And he did it. And he did it WELL.

This work is gigantonormus. Below you’ll find pictures of a bunch of closeups of this monumental work, above you can see the whole image in all it’s lovely glory. Oh if only I could have this thing right up in front of me. Oh if only.

The paint on the face move that struck the fashion world like a cat strikes a slab of butter! “A Friend Of Mine” design member and photographer extraordinaire Lizette Bell created this amazing concept that’s just so simple it’s amazing. This “paint by numbers” is applied to fashion photography but I think it should be applied to every facet of life.

Paint it by NUMBERS!

This project was made basically in celebration of the 1950s tradition of paint by numbers. At first the lady has the excellent numbered spaces outlined in blue, then she’s got what appears to be very nice looking paint that really looks like it belongs there on her body. What does it all mean?

It means that GOD is in fashion. GOD has got a paint by numbers for all of us to follow, and in order for that to happen, we’ve got to be as fashion conscious as we can be.

Yes, it’s time to go back into outer space. Look here, fella. This is simple, simple, amazing. Nature fantabulous things, and Gaëtan Massaut, the super artistic photographer, photographs them. And then there they are all leafy and stick-filled and amazing beyond anything we mere human designers could expect to accomplish! Super motivating! Excellent.
