Or, do that, but do something super neat to the card to make sure they’re fun to keep, fun to look at, fun to post. And make em fat, like 1.5 mm mountboard fat. Clipped. That’s a nice green, yes? Really positive. Looks like it’s folded over, but it’s totally not. It’s printed quite nice, and cut down to size. Behold, a tiny collection of guitars turned into masterpieces of weirdness by a collection of artists of such odd disparity. One guitar basically has nothing to do with the next other than the base and in a couple cases, the region from whens the artist cometh. The photos we’ve got below were taken at the place where this show resides: Grumpy’s Downtown Minneapolis. This show was originally conceived as part of the Amphetamine Reptile Records 25th anniversary bash, and runs until September 30th, 2010. Go look! The most excellent (despite their death-dealing) automotive machines from the second world war are here, in full color, taken out of context for a beautiful vision of engineering mastery. These are the photographs of artist Jim Naughten, a photographer with some amazing eyeballs and sense of space.

The perfect and most appropriately absurd contraption for getting around your city whilst remaining in “natural” mode is this – the “Parkwheel.” This wheel of grass and walkability is designed and executed by David Gallaugher and a couple helpers from his school Dalhousie architecture. It’s a grass wheel. Walk around in it with no shoes or socks on.

Make sure you only enter buildings with tall doors. Feel that fantastic feeling on your tootsies and wiggle them around a little bit.

There comes a time in space every once in a while where none other than GOD himself grants us thustly a favor of time and need for intricacy. It is during these times that we’re allowed to take that time and create that intricacy for the greater good of fine art and design. This is one of those times, pre 1861 United States of America, in a time when money design was needed and the only defense against counterfeiting was high amazing detail, as done by engravers with the most fantastic of skill.

What we’ve got here is a small collection of pre-1861 engravings done for money around the USA, all of these part of the British Museum Archive. Strange, yes? Take a look in their archive site there for a mastertastic collection of the finest treasures from the entire globe and throughout history.

But do that AFTER you take a peek through these images, all of them so fine. And if you’re an illustrator, designer, or artist, hope and pray for the opportunity to take such an amount of time as these folks certainly did use to make such timeless works. What a gift.

Dude. Bounty Hunters? I heard that we probably don’t even need their scum. But today what we’ve got here is a bounty hunter invention competition. Fabulous illustrators from the streets both inventing new bounty hunters and bounty hunting new pictures of the old ones. They’re all just the most excellent such stuffs of the most laser-shooting knife-weirding dirt-wearers in the galaxy.

Of course this competition is Star Wars based, and of course it was first started at the most excellent forums in the pixel universe, Unit 16, which is a forum for discussing illustrations and being an illustrator for those who love to do both things. You should check it out! And bonus! If you like the illustration above, and several of the very similar illustrations below, you’ll be glad to know we just did a whole post on the draw man!

Oh man I HATE IT when people are passive aggressive supreme. So much. So much do I hate such a thing. But I’ll tell you what I like. Green White and Black. As together as they should be, all day and night. Up in this project. It’s a ton of materials, like stickers, sticky-notes, and badges that allow YOU to make the most of your passive aggressive nature in just the most fantastic sticky-designish way possible!

Blame designer Ben Bours.

Complaint Department is a kit of materials that facilitate passive aggressive complaining. Instead of confronting someone, why not just use a witty sticker to let everyone know your grievances?

Hamburger shop perfection, Val’s Rapid Serv. The best burger shop in Saint Cloud, Minnesota, and any dang other place in the world as far as I say. Inexpensive, fabulously fast, and yes, they’ve got Root Beer. And the best part of this shop? It’s looked exactly the same for the past 50 years!

A lovely review (from an “outsider” perspective) has been done by MSPD of Chowhound. But there’s really only one thing you need to know: every time you order fries with your burger, (this should be every time,) you get a giant shovel. There’s a tiny bag for the fries inside your bag containing your whole order, but the fries dwarf the rest of the food.

If you can get all excited about this, thank a design teacher! Or thank your reading teacher. Did they have that? Reading class? I don’t even remember. Anyway I’m finding out that the people who do illustrations for magazines and periodicals using ink, paint, pencil, sculpture, whatever, are amongst the wildest thinkers. Their objects don’t have to work, so they’re free in a way a real-life Industrial Designer never can be. But it’s gotta look good. And this standardized test form looks ace.

I was asked to do an illustration in NYT Magazine’s college issue, the article was about the effect of faculty / instructor evaluations at Universities and Colleges in the US. I decided on a slightly subtle approach through an exaggerated take on the standardized test / survey. Whenever I was asked to evalulate my instructor, the specific categories (questions) the survey contained were pretty difficult to answer and it came down to the basic notion that some students that really liked the teacher … and some who really hated them. The tests strive to have an objective aura, and that is reflected in a systemic idea and measure of ‘good teaching’, with this illustration I wanted to show the subjective nature behind the evaluation surveys.

Welcome to protester paradise (if there is such a thing.) We live in the future, where a country in a situation like Iran can communicate with the entire world on a neu-personal level. The situation is terrible, but the potential for positive change is fantastic. If you’re unaware of the situation in Iran at the moment, see Geotypografika for all the graphically concerned news you’ll need. Then come back here and experience the signs of solidarity. Message to News Organizations:

I have received a number of requests to use these photographs from multiple news organizations.

These are not my photographs. They have been collected from Twitter and other social networks. They are being gathered together in the Flickr collection for the convenience of the press and others and to ensure that there is an additional depository for these images in the event that their original location is compromised by hostile action.

As they are not mine, I do not have the ability to authorize their use. However, one major news network has decided that; “We recognize the risks people are taking to get the pictures out and intend to use as many of them as editorially appropriate. We will not currently require formal license agreements considering the situation.”

I would invite your news organization to reach a similar decision and to use all photographs that do not contain a watermark, or annotation, indicating that they were taken by professionals.

The individuals that took these photos, risked their lives to do so and it is incongruous that having done so they would not wish these photographs to be used by the world media. In light of this I beg your news organization to use these photographs and to disseminate them as wide as possible. Constant press coverage by the international media is the only thing preventing a massacre in Iran. The re-publication of these photographs will help to save lives. There is a clear moral duty in this context. Be human.

A common message on signs, usually written in Arabic, reads as thus: “Our green vote was not your black name” or “My green vote was not your black name.” Another is “We break the idol not the glasses.” The most commonly used phrase is “Where Is My Vote?” or “Where Are Their Votes?” – the images that look like they were rendered to be used in a viral manner, well, that’s probably what they are there for.

Its becoming the music of the revolution.”

An ironic co-incidence. The Banksy molotov bouquet image has existed since before 2003* *that’s when I saw one in real life when I was trodding around Hackney! On the other hand, this man tossing flowers in Iran seems to have just appeared in the last few days ala the 2009 presidential election protests.

How real reality?

Check photographer (or photograph collector) Bahramks to rile up more info on the flower tosser – what’s known is that he’s probably part of the “riots” in Tehran a few days ago right after the election results were announced – and quickly refuted.

This was a campaign in which we had to promote grapes as a healthy snack alternative. These ads show how grapes can be your best friend at snack time.

SHORT BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT
Mark Wagner was born quietly in the rural Midwest at the tail end of thirteen children. Since leaving the sandbox at the age of fourteen, he has continued his creative career in the fields of writing, collage, and bookmaking. He is co-founder (currently president) of The Booklyn Artists Alliance, and has published books under the name Bird Brain Press.

Wagner’s work is collected by dozens of institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, The Walker Art Center, the Library of Congress, and the Smithsonian Institution. It has shown at The Metropolitan Museum, The Getty Research Institute, The Venice Biennial, and The Brooklyn Museum.

STATEMENT ON COLLAGE WITH CURRENCY
The one dollar bill is the most ubiquitous piece of paper in America. Collage asks the question: what might be done to make it something else? It is a ripe material: intaglio printed on sturdy linen stock, covered in decorative filigree, and steeped in symbolism and concept. Blade and glue transform it-reproducing the effects of tapestries, paints, engravings, mosaics, and computers-striving for something bizarre, beautiful, or unbelievable… the foreign in the familiar.

GENERAL CREATIVE STATEMENT
My creative production includes work in many media: from writing and artist bookmaking to drawing, collage, and assemblage. Though varied, this work is far from eclectic-forming several discrete bodies that both stand on their own and link in nature and theme to their counterparts.

In whatever media employed I have a tendency toward meticulous production and solid graphic presentation. Usually fantastical, occasional surreal, and often interdisciplinary- I am satisfied only when concept and craft meet on equally firm footing.

What a nice man, it seems. Look at his dollars!

And feel free to pick one up for my birthday if you happen to have a ton of cash laying around, or if you can convince Mark Wagner to make me something, I would not be averted to that either.

The first time I realized the power of the dollar as a canvas, it was near the end of the first run of the band Rage Against the Machine. They had a webpage at the time, (still at http://ratm.com/ now,) and the front “welcome page” was a dollar with something written on it like “the only bit of parchment noone will destroy.” OR something like that.

And it was pretty powerful to me, so my young mind decided the best thing to do was to make all the Washingtons into Jokers. Not that I actually ended up doing it though, of course.

Well, not to crush anyone’s dreams but apparently The Tallest Man On Earth is actually a rather small, dark haired Swedish man who plays guitar and sings lovely Dylan’ish songs. That’s not a complaint. It’s just the truth, friends. With that said we should also tell you that this man, with just his voice and guitar, held the attention of all the lucky people in the club that night. Impressive.

Oh shit, wait, you mean Los Angeles doesn’t have ENOUGH water? You mean they’re running out? Oh that just sucks. Looks like they’ll be needing a CalArts Design Team to help them cut their way out of this sticky drought-su-ation. Very dry. “Rethink” your green.

Check out this conceptual campaign that one particular group of CalArts students are working on in order to turn Los Angeles and the surrounding area into a self-sufficient city (in the way of water, anyway.) Their primary concern is with the so-called “traditional lawns” that people insist on. These are lush, heavy-green yards that couldn’t possibly survive in the CA climate without constant human attention (and yes, lots of water.) What they suggest instead is the fantastic array of natural-born flowers and other garden plants that are adept at living in the harsh sun with little water.

Hooray! Estate Sale season has begun! Today I present to you a gem I picked on Saturday: TOURING. This is the 1955 version of the amazing automobile card game that has gone through several major redesigns since it’s inception in the early 1900′s. Check out the whole card set below, then see Board Game Geek for all the information you’ve ever wanted to know about the game.

Of special note: check out the font used for the title in the directions, and don’t forget to scream with glee at the wonderful green mountains picture on the back of the deck.

A lovely green and off-white project which has the potential to produce a poster. Designer Sami Foust speaks thusly, “A small folded book I created for class. A bit of Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius by Jorge Luis Borges:

Tlön’s geometry is made up of two somewhat different disciplines – one visual, the other tactile. The latter, which is equivalent to our geometry, is held to be subordinate to the former. The basis of visual geometry is the surface, not the point. This geometry has no idea of parallel lines and holds that a moving man modifies the forms that surround him.
