Fairey’s Pace Editions studios residency also included several giant-sized murals painted around the city that add to his already seemingly near-infinite presence in the 5 boroughs of the most famous city on earth. The image you see above with the bomb and some cherries represents one of several of Fairey’s newest combination family called Imperial Glory and Power. This set of images “pay homage to Lichtenstein’s style while referencing issues of the military industrial complex.”

Hello all you fellows and ladies who love artworks in huge exhibitions. Here’s an yell about an art show that’s got some fantabulous names in it that don’t often hold shows, then a ton who’ve never shown works together before. Subliminal is an art gallery in Los Angeles run by some of the same people or otherwise close associates of the people who bring you Obey Giant and Studio Number One. That means they know what they’re talking about as far as effective art and design. This show is going to be a blast upon their walls with wonder, and if you’re in the area, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t head on over and take a big giant peek. There’ll be Martha Cooper works there (pictured above,) that should be more than reason enough by itself!

Wreck the Walls includes works by over 30 artists, established and emerging, who have helped shape the artistic spirit influenced by their times. Rebellious pioneers of their artistic genres, who come from a background where there are few rules and anything is possible, have helped pave the way for a younger generation of artists who are influenced by their prevailing subculture. From gallery to street art, this show expresses each artist’s divergence and individuality, offering a visual cornucopia of painting, photography, mixed media, works on paper, digital prints, sculpture, graphic design, and illustration.

This show seeks to allow the viewer a window into the myriad worlds of a group of artists whose careers span over two cultural generations, and whose individual visions create a disjointed mosaic. Their works recall the vastly differing self-perceptions cultivated in a patchwork art world constantly seeking to define and redefine itself. Wreck the Walls embraces the multiple identities of the artistic practice, and rather than seeking to congeal the complex layers of artistic vision that make up the culture, the show celebrates distinct perceptions by juxtaposing artists, whether established or emerging, who reject uniformity in a culture that defies singular classification.

Many of you who know who David Choe is know he’s an internationally known artist. What some of you might NOT know is that he’s basically banned from Japan. Five years ago or so, he was at an art show in Tokyo and decided to do some graffiti (and may or may not have punched an undercover cop in the face) leading to his arrest. Since then, he’s obviously been let out, and he’s not allowed back into Japan at all unless he can prove why he’s gotta be there. What he found out recently was that having your own art show in Nippon isn’t a good enough reason.

According to Choe, he’s allowed to try to gain access to Japan every 6 months. Choe says he’s failed three times already and for this new art show it’s not looking good. Choe also says that if he ever does get allowed back into a Japanese city and he’s caught so much as jaywalking, he’ll be thrown in jail for SEVEN YEARS! NO TRIAL! But no worries, because he’s more than likely staying in the USA while his fabulous works are being displayed in no-graffiti-land.

David Choe is the sort of person to regret and learn, and so too should all of us, especially those of use who tend to do stupid stuff. Some wise words from Choe:

The show we’re talking about here is taking place October 29th 2010, and it’s also got works by James Jean and it’s done in collaboration with Goodsmile and UpperPlayground. There’s gonna be all kinds of paint everywhere, t-shirts, prints, jewelry, handbags, keychains, and all kinds of other weird stuff, all of it Choe says is exclusive to Japan.

The following project is done by Nerea De Diego and is a wallpaper applied illegally type situation. In a rarely-to-never sort of move to turn the streets into a clean, ordered place by applying unanimity to an otherwise ever so slightly more diverse environment, Diego turns graffiti around once again. Graffiti’s been turned around, upside down, inside out, and broken so many times, it’s surprising there’s not more college courses devoted to the study of it. Or nah. That’d be fruitless.

These works can still be seen in the streets from whens they’ve been photographed, more than likely Madrid or somewhere in Mexico, but mostly in tatters. As many modern graffiti artists will tell you – this way looks amazing as well. This wallpaper project goes by the name “3,000 Posters Plastered on The Street” or “Intervention,” whichever you’d like best. These works remind me very much of the works of ESPO who occasionally does letters so large that to the untrained eye they appear to be blocks of paint that’ve cleaned an otherwise dirty or noisy wall. Magical!

So look, this is all a good idea. Don’t go do illegal things, but do do what your heart tells you to do, even if that means doing the laundry, cleaning out the trash can behind your house, or brushing your teeth.

Behold this pack of wall paintings by artist/designer Srger. This fabulous splooger of paint generally goes by the title “GER” when painting, Srger for design projects. GER is prolific in a very sharp style over blooms of color in the backgrounds. GER also seems to collaborate with equally talented cohorts all over Spain. Take a peek closely at both 8 feet by 8 feet square covers and block-long epic murals. Srger’s been in business since 2008 or before and continues to spray to this day.

You’ll notice a big lack of letters in most cases here. The letters are THERE in almost every case, but the idea that the letters need not be legible, an idea as old as New York graffiti, that’s heavily prevalent. Gorgeousness.

To check out more works by Srger, hang a left over to the portfolio for some graphic design and a little bit of spray, or go to the Srger blog sort of thing for an amazing collection of polaroids of GER work + other lovely images AND lots of digital collages for your eye-tongues to lick. So the masters of being on the scene have struck again. Thank you Arrested Motion for capturing this fabulous event: “Status Factory,” a solo show by Ron English. There was a tiny little preview back a couple days ago, and now you get to see the whole friggin thing thanks to the AM folks, those fabulous snapping fools. Thank you thank you! Hooray!

This isn’t the first time we’ve used Arrested Motion as a source. They’re fabulous and are always on the scene. This time they’ve captured the master of popaganda, Ron English, also known as one fantastic magician of paint, the reincarnation of… some mix of 60′s goon, kids who never grew up, and Picasso.

Today (I wrote this a few days ago) I hear the sad news that one of the ultimate original players in the Graffiti and Hip-hop world has kicked the bucket. “RAMM::ELL::ZEE” or Rammellzee as he was called died today [June 27, 2010] whilst, if the rumors are true, he was doing math equations in none other than his home town and city, Far Rockaway, Queens, New York. How unbelievably appropriate for one of the most mathematically sound wild-style artists of many generations. The first I ever heard of him, he was being described in the Graffiti documentary film “Style Wars,” his paintings of weapon-clad letters being shown by his pal Dondi, another king.

In humble celebration of the passing of Ram, I and we present to you a gallery of armored letters, operators that blow the lids off all that they encounter. Rest in peace, Zee.

“The letter is armed to stop all the phony formations, lies, and tricknowlegies placed upon its structure.” – RAM EL ZEE

Rammel is an enigma. An eternally complicated graffiti man who, according to wikipedia, revealed in an interview that his name meant heavy, heavy stuff – derived from “RAM” plus “‘M’ for ‘Magnitude’, ‘Sigma’ (Σ) the first summation operator, first ‘L’ – ‘longitude’, second ‘L’ – ‘latitude’, ‘Z’ – ‘z-bar’, Σ, Σ – ‘summation’.”

And that’s just the tip of this metal, mental iceberg. Look for some videos of this crazy brilliant man if you dare. He’s wild. Above begins and below continues the gallery including a couple of works by Ram himself (above being a “B” by Ram owned by a private party), plus a bunch of paintings by adventurers that were inspired without a doubt by Ram’s life in one way or another. Have a feast on these giant masterpieces in his honor.

Master of oddities Michael Gaughan had an amazing idea. He said to himself, “self, you know that movie Spinal Tap and how in the movie they never produce the original artwork for the album Smell the Glove? You should have an art show about that.” And thus he initiated it. To be held at the relatively new (1 or 2 shows deep so far, max) CO Exhibitions gallery in NE Minneapolis.* This show is to be known as the “Smell The Glove” show and is completely open for submissions. That’s hot. That’s amazing. There’s going to be so many submissions that it’ll be a stench of glove by the time the doors open.

*This location is literally one floor above Burlesque of North America and First Ammendment art gallery. Read these words written by Mike of Burlesque Design:

NOTE: Michael Gaughan graduated from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, the same place I graduated from. You know what that means? It means he rocks, and it’s basically like we’ve go the same blood. But he has more rock and roll in his soul. I don’t go around saying that about just anybody.

DOUBLE NOTE: One of the greatest things MG has ever done is make a band with his sister, a band which you may have heard of: “Brother and Sister.” I once saw them perform at the Minneapolis College of Art and design with a candy guitar – during the set, MG asked people to come up to the stage and lick the guitar as he played it. The entire situation was magnificent. If that’s any indication of what’s to come, expect greatness. The kind of greatness that only comes around every once in a while. Believe that.

We’ve been submitted some anonymously-photographed photos from the empty BUNGE tower over in Dinkytown, Minneapolis. These photos are full of lots of fabulous (and some terrible) graffiti and other silly drawings. All on the walls, all on the trains. From the looks of it, the train photos were taken right next to the tower, and the dark photos were taken inside the tower, probably all on the first level. You’ll notice a couple pics of some writing up at the top of the tower – this paint was up for about a week or two in early June, 2010, and’s now painted over. This happens up there from time to time.

Pretty sassy. Pretty dangerous.

Now like when we get any set of anonymously submitted photos, you’ve gotta note that we DO NOT know who took them. I’m certain that it’s trespassing being inside this building, so the photographer more than likely does not want to be tied directly to these photos. That doesn’t mean you can go around taking credit for them, but it does mean you’ve got free reign over using them. Feel free to print them out, for example, if that’s your bag, but be respectful. Even illegal work is still someone’s work.

NOTE that we do not advocate the taking of any photos where you’ve got to be somewhere where it’s illegal for you to stand, and will not post anything of the sort (unless, of course, they’re submitted anonymously.) Stay safe! And don’t go out at dark. Be smart.

Sassy sassy sassy! Here’s a collection, straight from that unstoppable spraypaint fiend, your favorite and mine, Bansy. He’s taken to the streets of USA, mostly just for fun I’d hope, but probably in promotion of his film “Exit Through the Gift Shop.” It just showed at the Lagoon in Minneapolis but I completely missed it. Lemme know if it’s any good. Above and below you’ll experience slap-happy loveliness sprayed all over the walls over the past few weeks.

Smells good.

Each of these works is done with simple canned-paint and spraypaint cans, I’m sure you’ll see the skill inside each and every one. It’s almost as if Banksy has events like a movie release so he can tie it to the paint. Welcome to the modern world of art. You may not start from scratch. Please locate two pieces of material before proceeding to step 2.

The image you see above of a rather epic looking Neil Young with guitar is the latest in a series of famous persons portraits by modern artist Shepard Fairey. These images were all had their debut at the May Day show that took place on May 5, 2010. There’s been a wild cross section, boy howdy. This is the first landscape style to be released. Neil Young. Musician and political activist and one classy looking mother.

Some words from Shepard Fairey on his Neil Young image reference’s original photographer, rock and roll photo taker Henry Diltz, the magic man:

ROCK ‘N’ ROLL PHOTOGRAPHER – HENRY DILTZ

Henry Diltz has been one of the most important photographers in rock ‘n’ roll for almost half a century, shooting rock icons from Jimi Hendrix to Kurt Cobain. I met him through Henry Rollins when he was working as a still photographer on The Henry Rollins Show, and have been a fan ever since I first saw his work.

Diltz started out as a folk musician, playing with the Modern Folk Quartet, and bought his first camera while on tour with them. He started hanging out with The Monkees and taking photos of them, and shot an album cover—the first of over eighty he would go on to shoot—for The Lovin’ Spoonful. He immersed himself in the rock scene and became the go-to photographer for bands like The Doors and Crosby, Stills and Nash, and was the official photographer for Woodstock and the Monterey Music Festival. He transcended the hippie generation and continued to shoot an extremely impressive roster of artists too long to list here. The reference photo of Neil Young for this piece was taken in 1969 and my all time favorite photo of Neil.

Since the dawn of artwork, there have been many ways of going about things. Since that beginning, there’s been art that people have really dug, and art that people have really hated. In both categories you could find vandalism. That is, covering a piece of property that isn’t specifically owned by you with paint. Or ink, blood, chopped up potatoes, whatever. It’s all also called graffiti. There are a few companies in the past few 10′s of years that have made it their business to supply the people in the graffiti business with weapons of mass destruction. One of those companies is KRINK, and while they’re generally in the market for selling small re-fillable felt-tipped markers, they’ve decided to make a slightly larger splash with this unholy blaster of paint: the 8-Litre Applicator.

Perhaps you’re familiar with the shape of this applicator? It’s a fire extinguisher. Only this one has been fitted specifically with the gear needed to successfully and continuously spray paint instead of fire-junk. Time after time you too can blast liters of paint anywhere you wish from this convenient re-fillable container.

The unbeheld. This is a photo set of the covered up works of glory all around the city of design. That’s right! This set of photos is called “Graffiti Cover Up,” and it takes place in urban Minneapolis. This project is executed by a friend and colleague of mine, also former classmate of mine at the MCAD, photographer Nicole Kuntz. She’s traveled the mean streets of upper, lower, left and right Minneapolis, searching for glorious works of art, finding them blocked out. But in that comes another form of loveliness, just another step in the evolution of a wall. A canvas, a wall, privately and publicly owned, for everyone to see, shown and covered up.

This is a set of five photos from a much larger set that will be shown soon at a fabulous show shown in the source! A group show by the name “F.R.E.S.H.” taking place at Altered Aesthetics in MPLS, MN.

Guerrilla art, hip-hop, punk rock, murals and more, F.R.E.S.H. will take a look at the origins, expressions and effects of street art as it has occurred in and beyond the gallery walls.

A crew who want to be known as “Department of D.I.Y.” have posted some street signs designed to do nothing but inspire some courtesy. Bike accidents in Los Angeles are rampant. Not that they aren’t in quite a few places, (shout out to my homie who just got hit-and-run in Albany NY,) but in Los Angeles the people with the printers and wheatpaste and brushes are up on it. This is love for the greater good.

Also tied on to this movement (and submitted to us) is this question and answer manifesto from the crew, telling of why and what is going on:

Who? The Department of D.I.Y. is a vast group of concerned cyclists and commuters living in Los Angeles some of whom are victims of road rage, hit and runs and / or harassment, many of whom feel that motorists do not fully respect their rights to use our common streets, all of whom wish for a safer more amicable relationship with motor vehicle traffic.

Why? Because this beloved city of Los Angeles can’t, won’t or doesn’t care about the safety of vulnerable road users, the Department of D.I.Y. aims to make a broad appeal to drivers via the campaign. The message “Please Pass With Care” is not intended to be political, nor is it intended to criticize the driver’s choice of transportation mode, it is a simple message of empathy. It is an honest straight forward appeal to drivers to give bicycle riders a brake, some room on the road, and some common human respect. The lives of cyclists are literally in their hands.

Where? Everywhere people drive cars.

When? The sooner that the message gets out the better. A lot of blood has been spilled in the streets. Every week that goes by, another hit and run, or another close call, or another chilling case of harassment occurs. This can not be tolerated.

How? This public appeal is to be spread in a respectful manner in the public space with maximum visibility to drivers.

So these are being put up right now in Los Angeles first, then it would be awesome if they spread across the USA, because god knows the message needs to be shot out of a cannon. I love that they’re both in English and Spanish, that’s healthy growth. You know that people who don’t speak English can drive cars? Wow! And everyone has the ability to hit people on bikes. Please heed the call! Share the road with everyone!

This post is part of the World Famous Design Junkies black and white category. That’s because this issue is nothing less and nothing more than black and white.

So me and my fiance lady E went for a walk. We live basically a block away from the Walker Arts Center sculpture garden, and we’d never been there before together, and she’d never been there at all! So we went! Along the way there were many shapes. Lots of green tones. Some glass, a bit of metal, and grassy floors. Through the sculpture garden we went, then back around the area, around and through. On the way back we took some cool pics of graffiti, or rather paint splashing, I’m sure you’ll agree.

These photos are all taken in the general area of the Walker and toward Loring park. The last picture you see is of the apartment where we stay, shown for contrast. Pay attention to the aforementioned splasher, otherwise known (to us) as the dripper. It’s paint dripped as street art. Very pretty.

Then look for nice shapes, excellent arrangements, and in general a short look at the garden, good for peeking if you want to ever visit yourself. The work Spoonbridge and Cherry is of course the most iconic work along the whole trip, and is basically included by law in any collection of photos of Minneapolis. Any trip done right.

First, right above, the first picture you see here, is one of my very favorite works of graffiti art. It was executed by master painter Deuce Seven (27) sometime before 2007, photographed on October 12, 2007 by 14-2-1. This is the most visually exciting way I can introduce you to a concept I thought of this morning: fruit in graffiti. I saw a spraypainted picture of a strawberry and it sparked my imagination. What’s going down with pieces of food, especially fruits, sitting there in the middle of an epic street art piece? Looking rather fruity! Looking rather juicy, colored to please the eye to the max, made to stimulate the eyeballs and the tastebuds and the jaw full of drool. Mikel Uribetxeberria’s done this project with his camera, his hands, and his eyes. And his clicker finger. Each one of these photos represents a collaboration, as each one contains a photographed background as done by M.U., and a photographed animal subject as photographed by someone else. If you’re a hunter like myself, you’ll know that paint isn’t the simplest thing to find in Minneapolis, unless of course you’re talking about the legally applied kind. But if you’re traveling by the tracks, well, you’ll have more luck. This particular adventure takes place in the NE.

North-East Minneapolis is where these photos were from, right down the road from Surdyks Liquor, down by the tracks. All these lovely paintings!

Hooray! Minneapolis hero gigantic mural painter Isaac Arvold has a new project on his hands here, and he hands it right over to World Famous Design Junkies to put on blast! And so here it is, a relatively mega painting on canvas, 12 feet by 12 feet square, painted, drawn, then painted by Arvold, assisted in part by Paper Tiger*. The painting in question here features Hennepin Bridge & Grainbelt Beer sign from the north side of Minneapolis. They’ve sort of been overgrown by some vine-ridden growth and doughnuts. That’s what Minneapolis really is, so it’s very appropriate to show the truth here I think. To tune up the interactivity of this project, Arvold took a huge long video of the entire process, 10 days mashed into a little over 4 minutes of video.

*Paper Tiger, aka John Samels, is also a Minneapolis hero, as he is a DJ in the rap supergroup Doom Tree. I think you’ll find, if you take a look, that quite a few of the talented ladies and gentlemen in the Minneapolis art and music scene(s) are pals.

It’s a big fun creativez tea party!

The music you’re hearing is comprised of beats strung together skillfully by Paper Tiger, who incidentally has his first solo record due out later this year.

This painting took 10 days from start to finnish, 12 to 17 hours each day.

AND after it’s all done at the photographers booth, it will be looking for a home! So if you know anyone who takes in homeless canvasses, give a peep!

Hey so who loves graffiti in places under bridges that you’re not supposed to go to because it’s illegal to be there and also there’s homeless people there who will kill you? I do! That’s why I love these photos taken by an anonymous donor, all of them marked 2006, all of them on either side of the Northern Pacific-BNSF Minneapolis Rail Bridge. There’s lots of stuff down there. Bring your camera, and your running shoes.

And wear long pants, and long sleeves.

Hello all you would-be distributors of the word to the masses without money. This is your new bible on what to do, (and more importantly, in that, what NOT to do), when distributing your message. It is also important at this moment to mention that everything you see above and below is illegal, and that if you try graffiti, you’re going to get shot, or worse, arrested. The author of this article, me, Chris Burns, is verst only in the small-time wheatpasting technique and small-town spraypainting. Keep that in mind, but also know that these rules are basically universal when it comes to street-trasmissions of the arrestable kind.

First is last: one of the greatest fellows to ever do it goes by the name ESPO (“Exterior Surface Painting Outreach”) aka Stephen J. Powers. In a book that’s a grail for any writer or modern art enthusiast “The Art of Getting Over,” ESPO writes his rules of graffiti. These rules are copypasta’d below the gallery at the bottom of this post.

ESPO’s rules work, they are important, but they’re directed only at the street art artist who’s planning on spraying their own name in giant, fantastic letters. The following rules apply to message pasters and backpack’n sticker stickers. That and first time or single-time spreaders, graphic designers, freelancers, artists, all that good stuff.

Let us begin! Do not start in the street. ESPO has a good idea for paint – start somewhere hidden, or equally alright, on a big wooden board at home. Above you’ll see a painting I did like a hundred years ago in a place that’s now demolished in STC, MN. It was in back of the world, basically inaccessible by anything other than foot. It was an abandoned warehouse that was so decrepit, only stone stood. A perfect place for paint.

If you’re not going the paint route, I recommend starting by placing rather than pasting, and with postcard or leaflet sized cards. These are a plenty-large surface for any message you should need to be spreading in this manner. They’re also easy to carry, and easy to carry in bulk. You can hold a handful of them at the same time as pulling one or two out for each little place you place them. And they can fit in the pocket of your jacket.

Dress the part. The best places for spreading a message to the people you want to spread to is the same places you go to on a daily basis – that is, unless they aren’t people like you. Find out where your audience goes on the regular, where their eyes wander to, and how they generally get their information in the offline world. Place your pieces there.

Of course, you can easily destroy your message doing this, provided you place it somewhere that makes people very mad. Generally these places are easy to scope. It’s the ideal locations you want to head to. After laying down fliers, pasting pasters, spraying paint for a while, these places will begin to show themselves to you. It’s just like typography or racing cars. Eventually the car tells you what it needs, eventually the letters show you how much space they’d like.

Places, People, Things NEVER to work with:
1 . Autos or Bikes – these are personal, everyone hates when their car is messed with.
2 . Windows – windows are for looking through, not at. Unless you’ve got permission.
3 . Clothing – unless it’s for comedy.
4 . Trees – when you staple a tree, you injure the tree. It will die faster because of you. Bad.
5 . Phones or computers – these are also personal, off limits.
6 . Merchandise – do not put your message on a bag of chips unless the message is about chips or made to look like a label for a bag of chips. This is where advertisers work, and on the whole, it’s on the way out – people’ve become numb.
7 . Furniture (indoor or outdoor) – If someone has to move your message to sit down and relax, they’ll be mad, and not only that, they might get so mad as to just sit on it, then fart.
8 . On the ground.
9 . Places where the medium (your paper or sticker paper or whatever else you’re using) will end up trash, polluting the world within a day. Obviously EVER should be your goal here, but if you put a piece of paper outside a building in Minnesota, it’s going to get soggy, it’s going to fall to the ground, a duck is going to eat it and die.
10 . Personal houses, homes, houses of worship.

Basically everywhere paper or paint should never go. Do not stick paper or stickers to places where the first reaction people will have is to rip it down.

Places where your message SHOULD go to be most effective:
0 . In the shadows of giants (see above: St. Peter’s Cathedral in the background.)
1 . In the front of newspaper stands.
2 . On desks.
3 . On tables.
4 . On countertops.
5 . In backpacks (of drunk people where available.)

6 . On posts and poles of all kinds (provided they aren’t still alive.) Above: A pole in view of the Eiffel Tower. Double whammy! Also you’ll see at least another qualifier soon (#16)
7 . Construction-site walls. This also covers basically anything around a construction site, something that won’t be around forever, something that is in-place for the time being – including places where a window has been broken out and is covered by a board.

8 . Hidden walls, or in the case above, outdoor hallways.
9 . Alleyways.
10 . Places of advertising (not buildings, I mean stacks of paper, billboards, signs, busstops), unless they’re really amazing. I know a sewing store up on the NE side of town that has their own hand-made 3D rocket as an OPEN sign. Do not fuck with that.
11 . Electrical boxes (big, green, gray, ugly, open, amazing).

12 . Down by the train tracks *but BE CAREFUL there’s crazies down there.
13 . Dirty bathroom stalls that already have lots of writing.
14 . Walls backstage at music venues.
15 . The backs of signs (STOP, YEILD, LEFT TURN)

16 . Places identified as workable by other like-minded individuals. Even the fronts of signs can become alright to stick a sticker on, provided enough other people have already rendered it unrecognizable.

17 . On the other hand, if you must paste somewhere where it wouldn’t normally be OK, paste it somewhere noone can see – for example, if you’re at the top of the Eiffel tower, put your sticker under the handrail. True story.

Take command of available resources. Find a printer you can use for free, then scavenge for paper. Paper is EVERYWHERE. If you can’t find blank paper, design a page that is mostly ink with the letters popped out – design for your medium, make it work, make it free. Unless you want to invest money into this adventure, in which case, in my opinion, you’re defeating the purpose of the deed and of doing the deed in the way you’re doing it.

I’ve done graffiti for these purposes, and they’re all just amazing:
1 . Because I wanted to express my feelings of elation to the world, and I didn’t have time to wait for legal means to give me that platform.
2 . Because I had to. That rush is unique.
3 . Because I had a message, a need, and no money.
4 . It’s quick. It’s easy. It’s fun.

The only reasons you SHOULDN’T be doing graffiti:
1 . It’s dangerous.
2 . You’re busy chilling out.
3 . You don’t feel the need to do the deed.

Do not fuck around. That one artist Banksy says that getting plastered on alcohol then going out to do graffiti is a good idea. It might be! But not when you’ve got a lot to loose. Don’t do graffiti needlessly. If you’ve got the need, do the deed. If you’re going out there to get respect, to represent for some sort of murder gang, drug dealers, shoe salesmen, then feck you, you get no respect.

But get up. There’s lots of space out there, and lots of ugliness. Everyone who can get involved and has the opportunity to get involved has the duty to get involved. I say so. But there is rules. Honor amongst thieves is nothing compared to how shunned you’ll get for ratting out a friend to the police in this business. That’s hate for life business. This is the business of a hear no evil, smell no evil at the same time as working in a world that will shut you down in the real world for REAL if they catch you.

So stay safe, don’t get caught, and don’t be stupid. And have fun AFTER you’re done.

You suck until further notice

It’s gonna take a long time before we even acknowledge your existence, even longer before we can bear to look at that foul scribble you call your name. To speed the process of acceptance, you can A) Choose a clever name that defies the norm of simple-minded slang. An example of a good name is “ARGUE” (RIP). It looks good when written, sounds cool when spoken, and conveys a combattive attitude. On the other hand, “ENEMA” (actual name) looks, sounds, and conveys a shitty attitude. BE CHOOSY. B ) Use paint, gain a thorough knowledge of supplies, remember that permission walls, stickers, and dust tags are small parts of a balanced diet, be bold, learn a style of writing for every occassion,and write your name bigger every time you go out.

Jealousy is a diesease for the weak

Your heart is your greatest possession, dont let it get taken from you.

Dont write on houses of worship, people’s houses in general, other
writer’s names, and tombstones. Writing on memorial walls and cars is beef beyond belief. Furthermore, involving civilians in your beef is grounds for dismissal. These are are the five fingers of your right hand. Get to know them well. Give soul claps, firm handshakes, and throw smooth bolo punches.

Although being a toy seems undesirable, you should enjoy it while you can. At this stage you can bite all you want with no remorse. All your elders will say is, ” Awww isn’t that cute, kootchie kootchie koo.” So steal that dope connection, rob that color scheme. and loot whole letterforms. Dont worry about giving any credit, we’ll pat ourselves on the back and brag how we’re influencing the next generation. However, style isnt a crutch or a schtick. It is understanding why that connection you bit flows, or why that color scheme bumps. Style is the process to an appealing end. Once you got it down to a science, you can reinvent letterforms to suit yourself. This creative growth will amaze the old and young alike. Pretty soon somebody will steal your secret sauce and the cycle will be renewed. If this happens to you, don’t bitch about not getting your due. Graffiti is the language of the ignored. If your style is stolen, someone heard you speaking. You got what you wanted from the beginning, some attention, you big baby.

It must be noted that the vandal squad loves graffiti. Their job requires
them to fiend for graff as much as you do. When you wreck enough walls, they’ll want to meet you. Just like the ball huggers outside the graff shop, they’ll recite every spot you hit, with the difference being you’ll also hear the Miranda Warning. To postpone this, go solo as much as possible. Dont write with anyone that wont fight for you. Don’t be paranoid, but be careful. If you avoid writing on pristine properties, you’ll stay in misdemeanor territory, and you wont divert the cops’ attention from pastry and caffiene consumption (consult local laws to be sure). Remember, if they didn’t see you do it, it’s almost impossible for them to win a conviction without your own damming testimony. Shut up, shut up, SHUT UP! Giving a cop info on another writer will doom you to a life of ridicule, from cops and kids alike, with no parole.

There’s nothing wrong with knowing your the shit as long as you are. But once you reach that conclusion, your one foot over the edge of falling off. Watch your step fathead, there’s no shortage of people chanting, “JUMP JUMP JUMP!” There are plenty of writers that have been painting well for the better part of 20 years, and your posing and fronting looks retarded next to them. Get back to work, you “never was” slouch. In conclusion, graffiti is free, impresses the girls, is heroic in our couch potato culture, will provide you with a million stories to tell at parties, and a sure cure for the inner-city blues. If it’s not fun, you’re doing it wrong or have been doing it too long. So get going, fame awaits the fly among you.

Hello Spinal Tap Anvil Antwoord. You see back stage. This project right here is a photo collection taken on tour with two German bands (Bosse and Frida). The photographer has the name Heinrich Holtgreve and is really good at taking photos and making one photo tell the story of the whole space at once (or lack of story if that’s the case, if you know what I mean.) This set’s meant to show through documentation that touring with a band’s definitely not all glamourous diamond baths and sex with dollar bills and cheese snacks. Definitely not. Take this journey and smell the glove.

It’s a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll. I’m in love with photographs of generally dirty or poorly kept spaces in buildings. What a simple wonder it is to see where people have left things. Drawings on walls, stickers filling mirrors, stains and burns.

These heavily trodden places have a more than invaluable stash of cultural information smashed into them. How to harvest it though is the question and the quest.

Holtgreve does well.

Here’s a project! Invented by a classroom full of wild and crazy senior designers from the Minneapolis College or Art and Design is this campaign to fire up the Minneapolis extended community. This is social design. Their first step was this US + THEM poster and flier campaign as seen above (and below); executed over an 18 hour time allotment, they doused downtown, uptown, and Dinkytown Minneapolis. Branding repetition works, it works, it works. And then there were a twisty.

The twisty were World Famous Design Junkies. Your faithful narrator had a funny idea, to take the US + THEM aesthetic and designer up some ironic propaganda, tossing on a WFDJ address for a quick skip ahead to what I thought must be a later step of the US + THEM campaign: clarification under headline, content for the brand.

And then came the real twist. Or rather flip. The leader of the pack, professor Bernard Canniffe (teacher for this class and Design Chair at the MCAD) turned a “ME” sheet into the sun and revealed a third dimension: WE!

The wonderful 18 hour start to finish US+THEM Design Blitz whose focus was to engage and saturate the Minneapolis community is then countered by the ME flyers. That is then countered by turning the ME into WE by holding the flyer to the light and reversing the flyer. The US + THEM + ME + WE is quite beautiful, almost poetic and, I feel, represents the complexity, urgency, and inclusivity of design projects for the common good. We are all in this together. We have started something and we will continue to follow our hearts to bring people together. I am sure, and I would like, people to challenge our work-that’s what art school is about.”
