That’s right. One to one. A perfect replica of a chair that designer Anna Haenko chopped up and stuck together to show. What could a person do with a chair like this? Probably not sit on it. But like a printmaker who whips up 15 different color combinations for their 2 tone print project, it is important to test more than one option. If given the opportunity to test, test you must. Test you should, because it is exactly that, an opportunity, a gift from the experimentation gods.

You might know from the title of this project, in the larger sense, World Famous Design Junkies, that we and I are pushing design. Not just graphic design in the industry sense, letters you see everywhere on billboards, signs, and internets, all that good stuff, but the idea that not only is design everywhere, everyone is a designer. Not everyone is GOOD at describing their intentions through their physical output, but everyone does it.

Look at Anna Haenko, textile and surface designer. She’s good.

My work is inspired by pretty much everything, mostly by strange people outside the door, the music I am listening to or just the look of the dog coming from the dog parlor near by.

I enjoy experimenting with new forms, patterns and colours.

I never stop searching for ideas and for new ways to experience the world.

A mister David Lasnier, designer and 3D pro, has replicated Marseille. In an extended stay and discovery mission on the streets of France’s largest commercial port, Lasnier exercised his skill on the ol’ 3D rendering engine to replicate iconic items he found all around the city. What a fabulous set of virtual items he’s conjured up!

It’s an interesting time in history for designers of all sorts. What tools do you need? That’s the question. Do you become a jack of all trades, master of none? Or is learning how to use every different tool the only way to become a true master?

From the looks of his portfolio, Lasnier‘s mastered several tools which are the following (and if not these, something comparable): Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, some sort of 3D rendering and animation engine(s), a pencil, a stamp, iPod touch (plus finger), some lovely video editing software, and the internets.

That’s hefty.

Today my colleague / friend Takashi and I were speaking on the pros and cons of the design fair. The one he was attending (Good Design Expo Japan) was different from the one in this post (Fuorisalone Milan), but the conversation would certainly have been the same. We spoke primarily of how even though it is wonderful and really right that when we’re at a gathering such as this that we get to see, touch, hold, and sit in the design, and yes, speak with the designers, it’s also a bummer that one cannot possibly see everything one wants to see. What is the solution to this? Photographer Giuseppe de Francesco may have an answer.

Fuorisalone
While the whole is difficult to see, the particular is always up to us. Made a cut, made a choice: Japanese touch during the Milan’s Furniture Fair collateral events. Thanks to Lavazza, Toshiba, Canon, MH, Elitis, Giuliano Fujiwara, Lexus, Archivolto, Driade, Yamagiwa…

Finding your way through here with an eye like Francesco and a little clicker and a lens (maybe even a camera) allows you to bring this Design Fair thing into an entirely separate space. I missed the fair, but I got to see beautifully captured. I was at the fair, but I didn’t see it like Francesco saw it.

This post is but one piece of the World Famous Design Junkies photography pie.

Stick with me here, because even though this post is about a soccer table, we’re about to get hella scientific. In nature, there is a thing called a fullerene. A fullerene is any molecules composed entirely of carbon, in the form of a hollow sphere, ellipsoid, or tube. These bits connect together to create hollow ball-like forms. The first fullerene to be discovered was the C60*, and it mimics the shape of a standard soccer ball exactly!

In naming this particularly nice soccer table “The Beautiful Game,” the designers at Gro Design took unto themselves the task of doing homage to the creator of everything, I think, because even in nature there can be found a football.

*The C60 is also known as the buckminsterfullerene, named after the creations of Buckminster Fuller, named by the discoverers of the C60, Robert Curl, Harold Kroto and Richard Smalley. At this point I’ve also got to name a friend and former professor of mine Erik Brandt, without whom I might never have taken such an active interest in the connections between fussball (aka soccer) and graphic design (or the design of all creation, for that matter.)

Besides that little blurb, there’s not much that has to be said about this exquisite football table. It’s made to replicate the grandeur of the modern sporting arena, while on the playing field: “its atmospheric lighting and chromed metal players capture the excitement and drama of a classic sporting encounter.”

Each piece hand finished. By “skilled European craftsman.” What more could you ask for in life than that? How about asking for this table to be put into production? Yes you can have that too! But they ain’t cheap!

First, you know who Mike Tyson is. He’s the boxer. He’s smashed a few faces in his day, and one day he even smashed a whole mansion and just left it there because he was totally just jamming with ferocity. It still stands there as he left it, in homage to his superior anger, and it’s been photographed by a real pro, Danny Wills, in two sets.

The two sets are as follows: Set I is called “Mike Tyson and his abandoned mansion.” and Set II, being all greenery photos, is called “Mike Tyson and his choice of decor.”

UNIMPORTANT FACT! This mansion was owned by the champ from 1989 until who knows when, at which point Paul Monea (think Tae-Bo) purchased it. He was found guilty of money laundering basically instantly after he bought the house though, so it’s still got that “Mike the Uncheckable Television Smasher” look to it.

+++ this place was documentation-style photographed several years ago by a Russian rag magazine and were thustly distributed amongst the internets. These photos aren’t them. What you’re seeing below are new photos shot within the past year of this post being made. Done by a dude with a real good eye, one of a real photographer, if you will.

This post is straight out of the World Famous Design Junkies bad taste files. But, as I read somewhere else amongst the massive amount of Mike Tyson research done for this post: this place would look amazing with a TRON makeover.

Disenfranchised youth! That’s what we’ve got here. Design concious fantastique photographer Pietro Cocco concocts this project entitled “MY GENERATION IS (IN)DIFFERENT” – a set of photos with dates ranging from 2000 to 2010. Each photo is meticulously set up and designed, each one features dated and timeless elements relating to rebellion, careful activity, and the lack thereof. Each picture is bright, precious, and soullessly full of heart. It’s difficult to describe my generation (the same generation, basically, that Cocco covers here, and he’s done it so well.

MY GENERATION IS (IN) DIFFERENT
The project originated from a reflection on my generation, the so-called
Generation Y, that of technology, reality shows, the Internet, information and immediate answers. Precisely this ease of acquiring information is called the project, the generation is indifferent to what happens outside their everyday reality. The news, even the most bloody, passing through the communications media are perceived in today’s so far from those receiving it. It is unconsciously anesthetized than the worst disasters to events as more positive, much to get there, symbolically, to have hung on their walls without worthy of attention.

Copenhagen based design and art studio Hvass&Hannibal has their hands on a meeting room for meeting-room central DGI CITY (basically a gigantic hotel/restaurant/meeting area complex in Copenhagen.) Big time! DGI did right by the world to hire H&H for this thang. Take a look at those hot lines! Take a look at the rest of the room below.

DGI-byen invited 7 artists and designers to redecorate their conference meeting rooms, in order to make meetings here a different and inspiring experience. For this project we worked on a scheme aimed at creating possibilities for dividing the room into smaller spaces with mobile boxes that serve as a system of flexible walls giving the room atmosphere and colour. In this mid-city meeting space we wanted to bring in a reminder of nature and did so by painting mountains on the wall. These, together with the highrise-like boxes, are meant to create a dynamic interaction between landscape and cityscape. Thank you to our assistants Nina and Lasse for their help on this project! While we’re on this note, I should mention: a fellow junkie and friend of mine, Mister H we shall call him, works for Epic – a place that sells software to hospitals and doctors offices and such – and they’ve got meeting rooms on top of meeting rooms in front of and behind meeting rooms just like this one – all themed differently. If you’re the sort of person in charge of making your workplace a pleasant one, consider it your prerogative to bust out some designs like this. Take a peep.

Welcome to the North end of downtown Minneapolis’s neighborhood bar, Grumpy’s. It’s got basically everything made real good. It’s got live music every once in a while in the side room, and karaoke on Thursdays. The Melvins have played here more than once, poster(s) by Shepard Fairey. Test Prints by Aesthetic Apparatus decorate the side room, while the back of the bar, (now on hiatus, not open,) is the OX-OP gallery.

Here’s hoping the OX-OP opens up someday in the future. There was hell of amazing shows in there! Nathan Jurevicius, Aesthetic Apparatus, Shepard Fairey, Jeff Soto, Mark Mothersbaugh, Gary Baseman, Niagara, Shag, Tim Biskup, Frank Kozik, Camille Rose Garcia, Glen Barr, Yumiko Oksana, Buffmonster, Burlesque Design, Kii Arens, Derek Hess, Gary Taxali. It seems to have been open 2003 to 2006, it’s going out show being the first Juxtapoz Magazine yearly show ever held in a city other than New York or Los Angeles. MINNEAPOLIS FO LIFE YEEE.

P.S. I’m sure I have some pics from at least the Nathan Jurevicius show I attended in ’06, so I’ll keep an eye out for those for the future.

“It’s Alive!” : A new book created and designed by Rob van Leijsen. From Frankenstein to Las Vegas to Crocs. And back.

Modifications serve one common goal; book evolvement. This publication shows the results of various modification processes. The results tell us how we persue a mouldable community. And how we want to control the nature around us.

Abandoned spaces are fantastic to explore. This particular space isn’t quite entirely “abandoned,” but it is recently emptied at the time of photography. This is a former home of New York Times Magazine, faithfully documented and put in a book by photographer Masood Kamandy.

Before The New York Times moved its headquarters to the new Renzo Piano building at 620 8th Avenue in New York, its offices were at 229 West 43rd Street. This project is a documentation of the 8th and 11th floors of that building where The New York Times Magazine was based. This table would be broken in ten minutes or less at my house. Not least of all because I wouldn’t be able to resist breaking one of those little things off just to see how easy it would be. Now, with the wit and ingenuity of designer Plummer Fernandez, the sound of a fart can be a reality! The Sound/Chair is his first sound to come to fruition. This chair is both an audio recording and a real pointy seat.

Designer Plummer Fernandez sets it straight: “Sound/Chair begins as a sound that is precisely crafted to form the shape of a chair when visualized as a 3-dimensional object using a volume, time, frequency plot. The chair is an exact replica of the soundwave graph. The result is a product with dual existence as both a sound and chair, and a new approach to designing products. Dimensions: -31dB * 1.35s / w 80  * d 70 * h 85. Material: polyethylene foam, water-jet cut.”

Chesterfold Lawn Furniture / If there were a Bad Taste party that I planned on attending, I would just not be able to go unless I had my full set of Chesterfold Lawn Furniture.

The designer of this wonderful terror is Eleanor Freya Gregory, who brings us this: “There has been a shift in kitsch from the fridge magnets and needle point cushions your Grandma used to own to purposfully designed kitsch items that are being bought by people who pride themselves on good taste. There is an apparent desire to promote and prove our impecablily good taste by consuming tacky kitsch items. The Chesterfold does just that. The chesterfield, a well-known, high status chair is brought down a peg or two and blended with an avaerge 1950’s folding beach chair. Now you can take your three piece suite anywhere.”
