This post is about crayons! Hooray! When people grow from a child into an adult, some things resonate with them – usually these things are tastes, like a certain kind of cookie, or a favorite lucky number. Some other people keep things with them that are supposed to be stuck on to the everyday lives of children ONLY. One of these things is coloring crayons. But like the awesome lady who’s done the project we’re looking at here, you and I are totally inspired by crayons and the fact that the whole tool can be turned into the artwork. Fabulous.

This is a collection of hipster dinosaurs crafted from the essence of an everyday jurassic coloring book. Crafted with the magic of crayons. Internet superstar Molly23 created these over a period of a few weeks if I’m not mistaken, and they’re traveling about on their own through the fffounds and reddits of this world. Behold! Posters of everyday things by designer Hiller Goodspeed aka H.G. Goodspeed. Each of these is done for the heck of it in good spirits for the greatness of mundane items, subjects, and events. Goodspeed is my kind of fellow. Seems to me that Goodspeed has that tick, that need to create, every single day of the year in some way or another. Even in the mind, speaking in giggles to his fellow affiliate – wouldn’t it be funny if – and the rest is history. A stack of lovely posters for the greatness of simplicity.

This is a tiny wonderful collection of posters that go by the title “EPDED POSTERS” and is in all colors, all subject matters of the average USA citizen. Lovely for those who love to rock, and for those who’r going to the bus stop to have a soda pop.

Perchance you’ve heard of the Talking Heads, band headed by David Byrne. Perhaps you’ve been to a live show of theirs, and thusly know of the magical nature in which it’s been known to unfold. Designer Olli Hannonen knows of this, and for a live album’s created a lovely cover encircling the essence of a specific show in which each song of the show is revealed in layers. Titled “Stop Making Sense” and colored in the warmth of the earth.

There’s a magical marriage between the square of the record sleeve and the circle of the vinyl. Take a journey through the major, memorable, and most iconic sleeves in history and you’ll note a big cross section of that same square/circle, and not just in the old ones worn through from infinite plays.

This is magical and sensual. Sassy and infographictastic.

Infographics for a Talking Heads live show. Every circle represents a different song. The show starts with only David Byrne, the lead singer, with guitar on stage. During the next songs the rest of the band comes on stage and the show grows into a spectacle. Shortlisted in Vuoden Huiput (annual award for the best Finnish graphic design and advertising), in young creatives series.

Behold this pack of wall paintings by artist/designer Srger. This fabulous splooger of paint generally goes by the title “GER” when painting, Srger for design projects. GER is prolific in a very sharp style over blooms of color in the backgrounds. GER also seems to collaborate with equally talented cohorts all over Spain. Take a peek closely at both 8 feet by 8 feet square covers and block-long epic murals. Srger’s been in business since 2008 or before and continues to spray to this day.

You’ll notice a big lack of letters in most cases here. The letters are THERE in almost every case, but the idea that the letters need not be legible, an idea as old as New York graffiti, that’s heavily prevalent. Gorgeousness.

Sometimes you’ve just got to make a box, put a pinhole in it, and take some photos. Sometimes you’ve got to do that and also use polaroid instant film. So it’s amazing and instant. And you’ve got to do is so well because you are photographer Janusz Wójcik and you’ve got an eye for photos and amazing photography. So you make a set of these photos and they’re really rockin and are all about color and arrangement of people in the photos relative to the media you’re accessing.

He’s got that fabulous skill of taking a frigging amazing idea and executing it in mathematically definable terms, aka vector illustration. When you illustrate like this first, you have a graphic that you can use at any size, any time. You can make it as big or as small as you’d like and its dimensions remain the same. But you already knew that. Maybe you’d like to sample some fancy moving versions of the images above and below? Let’s do that.

10. All The Little Figgies a project by illustrator Joep Gerrits including two posters filled to the brim with super-simplified characterizations of characters from famous movies.

9. Under Water Photographer James Cooper presents a set of photos that include many dunks under the blue, many of which took off on their own, like the spraypaint blasting into the water photo you see above. Everyone loves a moment of brilliance.

8. Ghost in the Photo Machine A collection of photos taken of photos on modern versions of reality. That’s people holding up OLD photos right on top of the real world, lining them up pretty darn close to the same place you’d have seen the objects in the first place. Lots of contributors, lots of amazing things to be seen.

7. Doryu 2-16 Pistol Camera It’s an intense investigation into the strange and wonderful world of the 16mm DORYU 2-16 pistol camera. Used at one point, for a very short period in history, by the Japanese police. For real.

6. Lost and Found The longest lasting and most updated post on WFDJ by FAR, this is a post full of the weirdest, funniest, and most viral images from everywhere around these internets. It’s basically one giant gallery full of firecrackers. The reason the internet is fun, all of it right here in one post. But NOTE: some of these images are amazing and designtastic, while others are just terrible. But shareable!

5. Star Wars Portraits – Victorian Style A project by illustrator / animator Greg Peltz that includes several Star Wars characters painted to look like they didn’t exist so very long long ago, instead existing in Victorian times – with a super bonus couple of illustrations of ol’ D.V. and his kids in American Civil War times.

4. Anybody Mario A full-fledged game by the name of “Super Mario Brothers Crossover” designed by Exploding Rabbit. This game’s amazing not just because you can play the entirety of Mario Brothers on your laptop, but you can play it as any of the following characters: original Mario, Mega Man from Mega Man, Samus from Metroid, Link from Zelda, Bill R. from Contra, or Simon from Castlevania!

3. Batgirl is Now Prince A limited edition concept project by cartoonist / illustrator Cliff Chiang, these record-cover sized prints (12″ x 12″) are part of a set of four 80′s record covers pulled into comicdom by popular Marvel and DC characters.

2. The Big Golden Farting Bull Sculpture artist Chen Wenling’s political sculpture features a devil-man Bernie Madoff being smashed by the economy he helped to depress (represented here by a giant golden bull.) Interestingly enough, this post became popular right around the time Madoff was thrown in jail for a very, very long time.

1. Rare Star Wars Photos You had to have seen this coming. Of COURSE Star Wars is the most popular subject on any blog, especially when its dug up and analyzed by addicts of both fine design and wackiness. This post contains a trove of little-seen Star Wars photos collected from limited edition books and the people who were on the set when the original trilogy was being made and filmed. Lots of fun in here.

So what does this tell us? What can we LEARN from this? Things like “never underestimate the power of pop” or “with Star Wars you’re good to go.” But overall, what is it? Good writing? A little bit. Amazing pics? Yes. Fantastic design? You bet. The total package of all these things presented in a friendly environment? Indeed.

So the masters of being on the scene have struck again. Thank you Arrested Motion for capturing this fabulous event: “Status Factory,” a solo show by Ron English. There was a tiny little preview back a couple days ago, and now you get to see the whole friggin thing thanks to the AM folks, those fabulous snapping fools. Thank you thank you! Hooray!

This isn’t the first time we’ve used Arrested Motion as a source. They’re fabulous and are always on the scene. This time they’ve captured the master of popaganda, Ron English, also known as one fantastic magician of paint, the reincarnation of… some mix of 60′s goon, kids who never grew up, and Picasso.

Here’s some awesome stuff right here. This is a tiny cross-section of stamps from the slightly larger collection of stamps I’ve got purchased from swap meets and garage sales all across Minnesota. That’s not to say that these stamps are Minnesotan in origin though, especially since none of them here are at all! They’re from all over the place, and mostly over the ocean. Below you’ll see seven sheets of stamps I purchased all at once. Someone collected all of these! Such a great amount of work!

And oh! The stamps are spectacular to look at too!

Below you’ll take a peek at cards filled with stamps identified with the following hand-written labels: Greek, Bulgarie, Costa Rica, New Zealand, France (with fancy backwards F), Poland, Poraguay (Paraguay?), Frenh Guiana (French Guiana), and Japan. All the best places!

The following is a project by designer Brad Tober that deals with a very clear ideation process, taking a source, taking from it its most basic elements, and using those elements to create something brand new. I myself learned about this process by my genius former professor Piotr Szyhalski (and certainly still think about it and use it every single day.) Brad Tober uses this process to create “Cinematic Visualizations” : scenes from movies transformed into circles of varying color, size, density, and location on a grid!

The example you see above is from the movie Kill Bill (volume 1) and covers the entire House of Blue Leaves sequence (basically the last long scene where Uma cuts apart the Crazy 88.) As you can see it’s reduced to basic visual elements.

Read these words by Tober which function as a basic outline of the project:

As an exercise in translating and transposing various media, this project involved the visualization of several scenes from cinematic works in an alternative format. Inspiration was taken from new media theorist Lev Manovich’s proposal, in The Language of New Media, that a digital (or digitized) film “can be defined as a function that, given the horizontal, vertical, and time location of each pixel, returns its color. [...] For a computer, a film is an abstract arrangement of colors changing in time, rather than something structured by ‘shots,’ ‘narrative,’ ‘actors,’ and so on.” This interpretation of the digital moving image poses a particular question: if a digital film can be considered a visualization of a set of data, is it possible to reverse-engineer that visualization to arrive back at a set of data which can then be visualized in a different way?

These visualizations track the movement of events—key people, groups of people, and objects—within the image frame and through time in four long-take scenes from cinematic works. These scenes were chosen for their likelihood to produce interesting visualizations as a result of their extended uncut camera movement (or the appearance thereof). Each event is distinguished by a unique color, and time is represented through the use of size and opacity: the smallest and least opaque points occur earliest in the scene, while the largest and most opaque occur latest.

What do Sushi, Whistles, Cheese, and Marshmellows have to do with one another? That they’re all here, illustrated by Rey Misterio AKA Juan Molinet, in a wild, classic style. Like many projects of this level of frajabulousness, this project is done for the pure love of the game. In the case of an artist, you can just call it artwork. In the case of a designer or illustrator, you’ve got to say that you’ve made it to promote yourself to the world so they can hire you for jobs. Same thing! Lookie at these cuties.

Recently, personally, I’ve been struggling with the idea that everything I do in life must be aimed at functioning in our global community in a way that will allow me to continue living the way I’m living. AKA it’s all got to be for the cash monay. Harsh, yes? Totally harsh. Then today, right now, comes along an amazing set of photos done out of love and in the spirit of experimentation, a set so beautiful that, gosh, what do you know, I bet people WOULD give this man some money for some prints of his work! Smart, God, smart.

The photos above and below are from a set called “Ansichten,” taken by a photographer named Mister Brendel, aka HERR Brendel. The title “Ansichten” translated to English is “Views” – a completely sensical name given the nature of these amalgamations.

Read this description of the project as written by Brendel himself:

It’s the color. The line segments of the color. Very pretty.

A wise character on a TV show once said: “Why tip someone for a job I’m capable of doing myself? I can deliver food. I can drive a taxi. I can, and do, cut my own hair. I did however, tip my urologist, because I am unable to pulverize my own kidney stones.” This is the exact same concept that is going on in the photographed objects going on here in this project by artist / designer / photographer Ben Innes. They are called “Separations” and they are exploded objects held up by string and photographed against single-color backgrounds. They make a person understand the nature of the object in a way one, even one who uses these objects every day, does not think about.

Components. Many, many components. I am not capable of making these objects.

Because these objects are complicated, so complicated beyond what even an everyday user understands, made of components created individually in factories and by hand or by nature or whatever else they were made by (elves?), they are valuable. So very valuable. They represent teamwork and sticktoitiveness! And Ben Innes knows this. He is brilliant.

He is also a young master of Pop Art. I know. I talked to him before. He’s the real deal. Everything he touches, people say “oh FRICK I wish I would have done that first, DARNIT.” You know what that means? It means he is a modern artist in the Pop family.

Above and below you will see Ben Innes’ “Separations” collection. He has a similar project called “Tapes” in which he finds significant recordings on tape-related media, takes them apart, and photographs them in a similar manner. In addition to these two projects, Innes has created a one-off book called “32 Separations” in which he collects works from both “Separations” and “Tapes”, wrapping them up in one very formal looking hard-bound book.

Let me show you something drawn on black. Then more on white right afterward. Some colors glittered all around, and like the title of this post suggests, some fatboy outlines. These are the illustrative works of Tin&Ed. They’ve got their eye on perfection whist living the fabulous life of whimsy. This is the line you’ve got a real option of riding your bike on if you’re going to function in this hipster aesthetic world. It’s like a bio-dome of confident light-bike speeding. Don’t run into the wall! Tin&Ed don’t.

What does this remind you of? I think it’s a bit of some forward-thinking psychedelic. Look at these colors and set them side-by-side with Cream’s “Disraeli Gears.” Hot. Let’s make a diptych. I hope Tin&Ed get to design a Gnarls Barkley album. Awesome.

When I become king of the world, this will be one of my main thrones. In fact, I think I will put this one in my conference room, to encourage wild thought. This chair goes by the name “Proust Geometrica” and is designed by Atelier Mendini – operating out of Milano. This chair is magic. It is a timeless desire to place upon objects the images we’ve got in our heads. This is an embodiment of that desire, and a step further, it’s not just ethereal, not just blasted from a dream. This is precise, straight lined, sharp. It smells like pop art and sounds like lowbrow art. And it’s pretty. It’s modern. It’s for the home.

Now you can buy this chair, if you want, by going to LIMN. The only reason I tell you this is because I want someone to buy it and either take closer pictures of it and/or send it to me so I can sit on it. In my palace of love power.

With each new age, especially ones that come with technological or social changes, aka all of them, there comes some artwork that defines the age. Not so much defines the age as epitomizes the craft. Here it is. The computer age spewed pixels, and in its horrible terror of colors in perfect squares made a thing that was unique. Still is. Here’s a set of illustrations as made by Alex Peverett, all out of pixels in such strange arrangements. All of them have fabulous titles too, like “CtadLSCrambl (2010)” (pictured above.)

In here you’ll see some things that, statistically, you’ll probably think look super horrible and ugly. But let me tell you! It isn’t. Stop yourself from seeing what’s there and see what it all means. What does it all mean? It’s swooshes of waves, even though it looks to be squared off.

I was writing a post for the greatest industrial design project posting site on the planet Yanko Design today and I happened upon an amazing quote. It’s the one you see above. It’s got LEGO in it. Sometimes things so simple as a recollection of someone else’s childhood ring such a true bell in you it brings a tear to your eye. That happened to me here. Not just about the building block toy, but about the knowing what’s fun and knowing what brings you joy as a kid remaining lit through to your adult life.

Thustly, I have made this LEGO post. It is full of LEGO.

The quote above comes from a multi-talented industrial designer by the name of James Howlett. He’s up in the UK and his online portfolio resides at http://jameshowlett.co.uk/ He’s got amazing ideas. Search for his name in quotes “James Howlett” on Yanko Design starting at midnight (that’s when the post I wrote will be posted) and check out how it all plays out. Hint: it’s rather do-it-yourself and oh Idunno… block inspired?

On a slightly side-note, I’ve heard people go nuts when other people say “LEGOS” because that’s technically not correct. This reminds me of the band The Prodigy aka Prodigy – called both things not because of mis-spoken terms, but because the guy in the band who was in charge of approving album designs saw that adding or subtracting the “THE” made for a clearer or more awesome message. That’s graphic design.

Now let’s look at some LEGOS.

That is, how dare I write about something that happened 2 years ago, it’s not new and it’s not vintage! It is a blog crime. But hello! Let’s break this silly tradition. Let me do it right now, here’s something right around the borderline – here’s some colortastic photos taken by photographer / writer / fabulous dude Ryan Muir at The Flaming Lips headline ATP NY 2009, at Kutshers Country Club.

Now BEHOLD these ultra-amazing photos of this concert. The Flaming Lips always put on these sort of concerts, always with the lights and the balls. So many balls, so many lights, everyone loves it! It’s a big hippie slam festival every time they roll through the town.

Now go look at this gallery. Keep in mind that it’s not new and it’s not vintage. Fear for your life, for it is wrong! But perchance you’ve not seen these images before, and perhaps your MIND is blown by these photos, an amazing array of fantastic arrangements in space… and time! Look upon them and laugh in merriment, then put it all in your psychedelic colored corncob and glass pipe and smoke it.

When you go into a graphic design project, especially when that project is something so simple as a poster, just a poster, you’ve got to go wild. By wild I don’t mean crazy, I mean wild. I mean you’ve got to throw a boomerang, see how far it can go, then catch it. Catch this. This is a poster as put together and made by designers at Aesthetically Loyal (Anthony Kolber). It’s a poster for a thing called “Yes Diggity!”

This project formed the poster for Yes Diggity’s first birthday party at Miss Libertines. It was a literal progression of the brand into the physical realm. We formed a numeral one using the diamonds from the logo’s crown, constructed from folded pieces of cardboard, hand-folded, pasted onto our wall and photographed. The accompanying type treatment was an exercise in extending the concept of the monospaced font to a mono-hierarchical structure, forcing only colour and text decoration to highlight the degrees of importance within the information.

That’s heavy! It’s almost a “trick” constructing something amazing, taking a photo of it, turning it then into a poster. But it’s not. It’s a real thing. it’s not a trick at all, it’s just a really awesome method for making something fantabulous.

If you’ll remember a few weeks ago, we posted some pics of a painting in process by a certain mister painter Isaac Arvold. At the time of the painting of the painting, Arvold was unsure of the final fate of the painting. Well look at this! This is one of the several new bike parking places for the city’s new biking initiative. On the endcap here we see the same painting we’re talking about sitting behind a biker on one of these green bikes!

Additionally interesting is the street that this is on – Hennepin – only a couple blocks away from the bridge that the painting depicts. How super!

The doodlers of this world know the need. They’ve felt the feeling you feel when you wanna cover every single bit of negative space on a page. Elena Nogués feels that need, and she feeds the need. This project goes by the name “Caotics” and it’s completely indicative of the fun, good, wild times to be had throughout the entirety of Nogués portfolio of colors applied to canvases.

Take a peek at these super cute doodlies! These most excellent smatterings of shapes and lines are in a collection of seven. In the gallery below, you’ll see these appear first. I’ve got some healthy amount of rage in my heart today. That’s why when I happened upon these “Animal Gangs” images illustrated by Mostrico!, I was totally pumped up. Mostrico is a very talented illustrator that hails from Medellín, Colombia, and also goes by the name Alejo Giraldo. These animal heads are part of a set, as many fantastic projects are – a set that includes a Cat, a Zebra, a Panda Bear, and a Fox, each of these with their own animal pack to run with them. Stay hard!

Each of these images is a pencil/pen and ink drawing turned to digital illustration and coloring image. Also they are each of them completely bad ass. Gangs are as follows:

The Lower East Side Bandana Foxes

The East Village Zebra Punks

The Upper East Side Dagger Cats

Which one would you choose to affiliate with? You know good and well which one I’d have to run alongside.

This whole project reminds me of the classic gang-battle action film The Warriors. In that movie, it’s not long into the future and all the gangs of the 5 boroughs of New York are called in for a meeting by the leader of one of the baddest of all the gangs. This leader’s name is Cyrus and he rocks a speech about how if the gangs, diverse as they are, as disparate as they are, rolled together, well then they’d run the city. All of them so strange.

All of them so wild.

These gangs reflect that. Each of these animal gangs is super fabulous for their own unique qualities and skills. Each one of these illustrations is amazing on its own, but without the power of the rest of the animals, they’ve just got so much to work with. Together, in this set of colors and lines, in this new collection, the powers each of them creates is more powerful than the sum of their parts — synergy!

OR! Onomatopoeics!

At the heart of every great piece of pop is a simple combination. A combination of words, a catchphrase, a combination of colors, an iconic image, and sometimes a combination of it all, so perfectly distilled that it sends shockwaves through our collective systems that never stop! Behold, Bat-viewers! It’s the action cards! Those everloving combinations of color and exclamation the likes of which have never been used as effectively before or since! Gotta catch em all, someday, you never know – a good shot is below!

This is a collection of bat-cards used at the point of contact in the Batman live-action television series and bigtime bomb movie! You’ll see combos of 2 and 3 colors as well as singular splashes over the still-moving screen. These kinds of cards of course come from the colorful creations drawn into comics since the dawn of coolness. Keep reading, bat-lovers, because the story doesn’t end there. Nay!

One must attest to the greatness of those who took and take the time to scour the great bat-archive for these images. Those fine folks with the time, effort, and great and holy task of watching every single episode of the Batman show and movie to find these indubitable images, look them up, they’s amazing!
