Presenting the wildest use of collage I’ve ever seen applied to a fantasy comic book convention game boy situation. This is MCAD grad Mitchell Kenneth Lewis’s Pokemon project. One where he takes different parts from all sorts of other projects like photography projects and works them together with some hot photoshop skills and creates something completely wild in the jungle. Pokemon cartoons turned into what they’d probably look like if they existed in the same plane of existence as us.

Oh Pokemon, how fun you’ve been for so very many years. How Japanese you are. How diverse is your cartridge full of digital animals. Mitchell Lewis has a fanbase. He’s got 9 down, 141 to go. Pokemon. In the original game, there were 151 Pokemon (150 + the secret Mew.) He’s gonna catch em all. He’s gotta! Perfect for viral spread, perfect for promotion!

Presenting a tiny set of collages and illustrations by artist / designer Bill Zindel. These were originally done for a group show called “Brown Bag” to take place at D-Structure, San Francisco, but now they stand alone quite fashionably. Color and lines, grids and patterns, all set atop brown construction-type paper. For placing beers in, for sure. This shade of brown and light gray are becoming quite prevalent in the graphic design world these days. They’re really nice to apply other colors to and provide an excellent non-affiliate blank-slate for any sort of subject. Zindel takes this flatness and applies fantastical color combinations for maximum sensual shock.

Behold each of these professionally constructed pieces of design art, then consider for yourself the implications. These are made with everyday materials, pieces of ready-made colors and pages cut apart with scissors or knives then applied to brown paper. With this combination you and your kids could create lovely works of joy that’d be forevermore hangable on the walls of your bodega or living room or art gallery.

We live in a time, right here right now, where many things are called beautiful. The state of modern art is in such a broad, diverse place right now that basically everything goes. We are still reacting off of Pop though, so more often than not the objects you’ll see in a gallery are derivative of something found. For example, artist mister Richard Prince whose photographs of cowboys were (and are) lifted directly from cigarette ads. But this work right here in this post, it’s all new. Designer / artist Jacob Lysgaard not only drew the feathery headdress in this image, he took the photograph of the boy wearing it.

It’s a new world, right here, and it’s screenprinted.

The image above is called “Indianer” and it’s all new, all born of the mind of Lysgaard. Once the boy was photographed, the image was manipulated in a way that allowed it to be one, single color (some form of half-toneing was used). From there, the feathers were drawn in layers, and everything was burned to screens and printed to paper in a limited edition.

This art print is the next incarna­tion in my ongoing series on juxta­posing portrait photography and illustration. The last piece in this series, as you might guess, was the one with the viking kosmonaut*. The boy is my little brother Mons, who were so kind to spend an after noon chilling out in the photo studio.

The most excellent sculpture I ever built in art school was one I made out of free wood glue and wood scraps from the scrap wood bin. All free, all A+. That’s sort of, in a way, what’s going on here with these newest works of wood and paint magic by Shawn Smith. Plywood, acrylic paint, and sometimes ink. That’s what these masterworks are made of. The heads of animals is what they replicate. The eyeballs of the elite are what they attract.

Your dollars is what they HOPE to attract. Buy them, gallery owners. I must see more! The only way for an artist to have the amount of time it takes to construct these things is if they’ve got the cash to eat dinner! So gallery owners, I say again, support Shawn Smith! This whole wood chippies glued together idea is fantastic!

The gallery below is in chronological order by year. Each year, starting in 2005, there are several works which were produced throughout the year. The gallery is ordered top to bottom, the newest ones at the bottom. Then after the gallery of individual projects, you’re going to see a set of images that all look alike, all of them with buzzards attacking an office. This is the bigger project of Smith’s dealing with these woodies. It’s called Vicious Venue and it’s a total bird attack!

Vicious Venue My recent work explores my interest in birds of prey as a source of conceptual inspiration and analogy. I am fascinated by vultures and the visceral way most people react to them. For my exhibition at Lawndale Art Center, I asked the question, “What would a digital vulture eat if it was somehow trapped inside this reality?” Vicious Venue is a sculptural installation consisting of a group of life-size pixelated vultures devouring an analog office full of obsolete technologies (like a typewriter, rolodex, and a rotary phone). The viewer becomes an intruder into the space, as if they are stumbling into the middle of the ongoing carnage as the vultures pick the office’s carcass clean. The title of the exhibition, Vicious Venue, refers to the double meaning of “venue” as both a place, and a group of vultures.

Scary. Again Vicious Venue is at the bottom of the gallery in it’s entirety.

So graphic design and poster printing team Aesthetic Apparatus is ten years old. …wait a second, weren’t they ten years old LAST YEAR? Yes, yes they were. That’s why there’s an exhibition at the MCAD gallery here in Minneapolis that’s going by the name “AAXI: A DECADE OF AESTHETIC APPARATUS, ONE YEAR LATE.” View MCAD-approved photos of the opening night below.

The distinctive, hand-printed concert posters of Aesthetic Apparatus duo Dan Ibarra and Michael Byzewski have garnered international acclaim since 1998. Shepard Fairey is in New York. Everybody knows it. Two gigantic murals up, paste-ups galore, a show called MAY DAY on the way. Both of those murals? They are right here, in daredevil fashion. All photos presented by COPE2 who you can see in the photos, he’s the guy with the black shirt spraying COPE everywhere. First in the post here you’re going to see photos of the Deitch mural, made in most direct response/preparation for the May Day show, with one photo of Shepard Fairey and COPE2 together smashing brains about what they’re going to execute, when they collaborate, then the rest of the gallery is the second mural. The second mural is half Shepard Fairey and half COPE2. I don’t think anyone will have a problem distinguishing between the styles.

For those of you who wish to continue understanding the power that is the axe-swinging barb COPE2, you can view his epic blog over at 12ozprophet. For everyone who wants to follow Shepard Fairey – good luck.

I’ve found some skulls here, skulls chock full of detail. Lots of stuff going on here, lots and lots of stuff. Lines going this way, and that way, and every which way. Shades and gradients, blacks and whites. All sorts of stuff. And all this stuff is done by illustrator / designer Iain Macarthur. We’ve featured him before. You know why? Do you? Do you even know why? He’s got the skills. He can do the deeds. He’s made this little collection of bone-tastic skulls just for you to look at and love, for you to then demand more of and hire him on to do something wonderful for you (with pencils.)

The man who has done these skulls is a skillful artist, making sharp lines and darks and lights in a fashion that allows for great detail and far-away impact. Devour nicely. Should you ever find yourself in feudal Japan, you’re gonna need, NEED!, to know what symbols are what. And I’m not talking about signs for the bathroom and the sword hut, I mean crests. Badges that express heraldry in Japan since 900 A.D., peaking in production and diversity in the feudal age. Lots of badges made right around there in time. In this post there are over a hundred unique crests, each of them marked and categorized, each of them reproduced faithfully from the greatest book in the world, Ernst Lehner’s long out of print hard and soft cover symbologists dream book “Symbols, Signs, & Signets.”

Some of y’all might remember earlier this month when we took a look at a different part of this same book for some Hobo Symbologies. Really excellent stuff. The symbols you’re about to take a look at are from a completely different part of the universe – Japan.

Worn on garments on the back of the neck, the shoulders, and on each breast. Worn on everything, fighting uniforms, skateboard gear, birthday suits, figure skating costumes, everything except wedding robes, mourning robes, and hara-kiri garments.

Below you’ll find symbols from basically every wild category you’d ever want to symbolize about: flowers, fruits, vegetables, canopies, umbrellas, fans, ships, sails, weapons, helmets, butterflies, insects, birds, fish, mammals, scrolls, and dragons. There’s also a few illustrations of some folks from that era by artist Totoya Hokkei. – and on that note, if anyone has any Hokkei prints just lying around their house, they can feel free to send em on over!

Let me show you this tiny off-the-wall project by some rather intelligent folks who usually make it their business to build the insides of webpages. Designers at Tatiret Compagnie Ouverte have created this small set of collages called “Animaux.” There’ll be one part of an animal, then there’ll be another. Why they are that way, I do not know! But I like what I see.

These peeps claim to fame that I knew them from instantly: Indexhibit. They, along with Daniel Eatock designed and programmed both the Indexhibit cms and website. These animals, as far as I can tell, are only very generally attached to that project.

Let me tell you about science manual books. Science manual books are manuals full of science related materials and science related illustrations. Most of the illustrations in science manuals are line-drawings. Since the illustrations in science manuals are line drawings, and on the whole, look basically the same, they’re very viable for super-simple collage. Super-simple collage is what’s going on right here! Super weird compositions by design entity known as Culprit Tech. Main member/illustrator: Matt Pattinson.

Culprit Tech has been making amalgamations such as the ones found in this post since December 2007. What Culprit Tech does is to create collage works out of old science magazines and books and all that lovely stuff, take those collages and animate them, finally adding music by musician Mammal live!

Culprit Tech’s most recent show was just this November at Analogue Books, their next will be sometime in the next two months! The video below is an example of what you’ll see at a live show, projected on a screen, the music live.

Typography is a specialty of the eyes for Herr Brandt, and his camera helps him help us to understand the lovliness of his environment. This is a project self-initiated by designer André Bergamin as awesome, awesome practice for his trade – collage. It’s an extremely important skill to have as a designer, that being the ability to collage a fabulous collage. If you have this ability, if you can take images, rip them apart, then put them together in a new original way, you’ve got double the power your average designer does. You can use any image you find in this world so long as you change it to a large enough degree. Bergamin’s done so.

Experience the power of these invisible sounds.

The one I’d set your eyes on is above with a thumbnail below. Uncouth. Block out the eyes and rattle the snake. The purpose of collage like this is not only to distort the images uses, but to enhance them. All of them!

Nothing is placed without purpose, no purpose is less than to enhance.

Set your eyes on this expanded look at the cover of the new CLONE magazine designed and fully illustrated by Grzegorz Domaradzki aka GABZ. It fills me with love for yellow and purple. Or violet. Whatever you want to call it. I’ve never seen faces illustrated with such grace in the color purple. I love them so much I can barely believe it. I’ve read CLONE magazine only a couple times, I think they were sitting in the waiting area at Rhymesayers. The inside’s pretty interesting, but the cover is where it’s at.

Below you’ll find a bunch of pictures, close and far, of the CLONE cover in question here. Of course, what are you going to ask about it though? Not much. It’s pretty much all there right in front of your now wet-tongued eyeballs.

I’m gonna look for some more colored penciled subject matters right about now. Some new contents with colored pencils like THIS. Because that’s what’s up today.

Street artist Sam3‘s been up to some good, goodness sake. Look at these two newest works of his, both of them gigantic black figures rolling away the bad vibes of the billboards they live at. What a spectacular gesture. It doesn’t even have to be about advertising, it’s just that excellent. These were painted with simple black acrylic/oil/mixed paint, whatever was free at the time, painted with rollers on long sticks. See the other one below.

Above you can see the image called : “In The Autumn Leaves Fall.” Below you’ll find a collection of similar works by Sam3, followed by the other most recent work of his, “Getting Through The Back Door.” Both of these works were done in the past few days (14th of October and 19th of October, 2009.)

SAM3 is an artist that paints big (and we mean big) as well as small shadows and silhouettes in his urban surroundings. Sometimes ironic, other times poetic, always thought provoking, his work is more than a pretty picture.

Born in Elche, Spain, SAM3 currently lives and works in Madrid, Spain. His large street murals are certainly hard to miss to say the least and can be found across much of Europe.

What designer / filmmaker Kurt Ralske has done is to create a program which searches two full-length films and finds the two frames which are most similar, one from each. The programs compares only shapes within the image, yielding wild results the naked eye might never have glued together. Most excellent! This post contains all 8 published examples of the machine in action, starting with Joan of Arc / 2001 : A Space Odyssey (above.)

The Inevitable

“The Inevitable” was created with custom software written by the artist: the program searches through a database of movie files, comparing each frame with every other frame, looking for pairs of frames that resemble each other the most. “The Inevitable” presents the run-up to these pairs of matching frames. The program compares only shapes within the image (not color or content), leading to some pairings that resonate in unexpected ways. In the end, the inevitable twinned conclusion, regardless of genre, age, or nationality, is not simply a delightful coincidence: instead it has the claustrophobic and humbling quality of less-pleasant inevitabilities, like death and taxes.

“The Inevitable” was made possible in part by The Media Arts Fellowships (a program of Tribeca Film Institute, founded and supported by the Rockefeller Foundation) and The Experimental Television Center’s Finishing Funds program (supported by the Electronic Media and Film Program at the New York State Council on the Arts).

Blaugh! Look at these cool drawings. I want these printed gigantic or basically made into vinyl stickers and stuck to a wall. Big. I love the detail. These are pen and ink drawings from Iain Macarthur made for stickers and tshirts and junk.

Brand flippin new works from the design / art collective FAILE. The works contained in this post are dubbed (by Faile) to be the Wood Paintings set and will be formally introduced next week at FIAC art fair in Paris with Perry Rubenstein Gallery. Faile’s going to be represented by Perry Rubenstein in the United States from now on, their first show to be some time mid-2010. This set of fine art pieces is the first bunch to be produced and shown in corroboration with PRG. And they’re HUGE.

As you can see, these pieces are made out of blocks. The insane amount of work that’s gone into each little tiny big of these constructions is staggering from a craftsman’s point of view, then there’s the lovely look of it all. Absolutely museum-grade. These are so giant and so fantastic I’d feel terrible owning them outside of a gallery situation. These amalgamations need to be seen by as many eyes as there are type-loving minds in the world.

First things first, we are proud to announce Perry Rubenstein Gallery will be representing Faile here in the US. We have plans to do a solo show with the gallery in mid-2010. We will be debuting new works with Perry Rubenstein at FIAC in Paris next week. The fair opens on the 22nd of October and runs through the 25th of October. They can be found at booth D01 in the Cour Carree.

When’s the last time you did a puzzle? I mean like when’s the last time you put a whole freaking puzzle together? Have you ever wondered what it’d be like to take a bunch of similar-sized puzzles, slapping them together without mercy? Oh my goodness that’d be a mess. Or would it?

Artist / designer Gerhard Mayer thought of that. And he did it. And he did it WELL.

Oh so pretty, oh so nice! Each one of these 30 prints is different and smooth like unfinished ice! Artist/designer DAIN has a new (and first!) solo show (congrats!) of artworks like these at the Brooklynite Gallery which is located in (you guessed it) Brooklyn New York. The work in this show revolves around the 1940s and is embellished and visually exploded by the brightness and wildness of DAIN. This particular print is a limited edition of 30 with super-wacky destructions in each one.

Better run fast right after it if you’re gonna catch it!

When you first see an album, note: SEE an album, what do you notice first? The artwork. Even when it’s a CD, or a tape (omfg what’s that?), you notice the artwork. The first version I saw of Jay-Z’s newest work The Blueprint 3? Vinyl. Glorious, 12″ by 12″ of pure amazing fantastic artwork. And The Blueprint III does not disappoint. It has a scrumtrilescent arrangement of instruments that Z says “reminds the the audience that it all comes down to the basics of music, the instruments, which have very recently been forgotten.”

I looked for the artist of this work for weeks, and I found him. Here he is.

That’s the man. Look below for the unbelievable set of white and red tools of the trade he constructed to make a new classic album cover. A legend in an instant. (Did you know that Jay-Z now has more platinum records than Elvis? Awesome! Elvis was racist and didn’t write his own songs, I’ll tell him where he can stick that blue suede shoe.) So. One time construction. Not sure if it’s still standing now, used for the album cover. Excitement.

Design Museum London recently celebrated its 20th anniversary by sponsoring a bakeoff. Contestants, including Airside, karlsson/ullman, and Cupcakes To Go, were instructed to bake a cake inspired by design. Here are some of the fabulous entries (taken from Design Museum’s Facebook page).

Hey. Let me tell ya. I’m sure you remember the Erik Inkala Rock and Roll Party announcement from a few days ago on here, right? Well the opening night was last night, and here we’ve got a buch, no, a craplost of pictures from the event. So many photos. Artists up the wazoo and back again. Peek at it.

These photos were taken at basically the beginning of the show, so it was mostly what I assume was parts of Inkala’s family. Let’s just say the people at the show didn’t seem like the normal hipsters, punks, and bikeriders that I’d expect at a graffiti show. But it was fun to see that, as I’m a fan of the proliferation of “underground” cultures, especially when they are literally in a room that’s under the ground, in the basement.

Artist / Designer Frank Gonzales is a process-oriented craftsman. He’s got his ins and outs on. As he paints, he decides what to do. As a designer, he leaves the windows open. If you’re in a rut, maybe it’s because you’re driving a car. Frank Gonzales drives an interdimentional spacecraft. Take a peek at his lovely bird set here, then see if you’re got a handle on space-time.

In his own words: I like to construct and deconstruct during the process leaving traces of my journey in the end results. Like life itself, there are elements of uncertainty, dialogue and changes that take place which can be both fascinating and frustrating to me.

Now incase you didn’t know, or didn’t notice the picture down there that’s just a pile of buckets of paint, you should be aware that these are all brand spanking new acrylic paintings. There’s nothing digital at work here, just paintings photographed by an camera. Just utter graphical loveliness.
