Should you ever find yourself in feudal Japan, you’re gonna need, NEED!, to know what symbols are what. And I’m not talking about signs for the bathroom and the sword hut, I mean crests. Badges that express heraldry in Japan since 900 A.D., peaking in production and diversity in the feudal age. Lots of badges made right around there in time. In this post there are over a hundred unique crests, each of them marked and categorized, each of them reproduced faithfully from the greatest book in the world, Ernst Lehner’s long out of print hard and soft cover symbologists dream book “Symbols, Signs, & Signets.”

Designers at Tatiret Compagnie Ouverte have created this small set of collages called “Animaux.” There’ll be one part of an animal, then there’ll be another. Why they are that way, I do not know! But I like what I see.

Let me tell you about science manual books. Science manual books are manuals full of science related materials and science related illustrations. Most of the illustrations in science manuals are line-drawings. Since the illustrations in science manuals are line drawings, and on the whole, look basically the same, they’re very viable for super-simple collage. This is a project self-initiated by designer André Bergamin as awesome, awesome practice for his trade – collage. It’s an extremely important skill to have as a designer, that being the ability to collage a fabulous collage. If you have this ability, if you can take images, rip them apart, then put them together in a new original way, you’ve got double the power your average designer does. You can use any image you find in this world so long as you change it to a large enough degree. Bergamin’s done so.

I am not even kidding you. That is the name of the solo show happening right now by artist / designer / wildman WK Interact. His name might be just “WK” now cause that’s what it says on the ads, but still, “How to Blow Yourself Up!” That’s what’s up. In this post is a basic rundown of everything that’s in the show. I’ll tell you what. It’s hard to make a really good poster. It’s easy to make a really good basic poster. If you want to make a garage sale sign, you need to write on there GARAGE SALE TODAY and an arrow. That’s the best thing to do for a garage sale. If you’re going to make a poster and you’re going to cut and paste some vintage graphics, you’re going to screw up. Unless you’re this guy. This guy right here, the one in this post, he’s really really good at this. And he’s got the typography right. So very right.

Set your eyes on this expanded look at the cover of the new CLONE magazine designed and fully illustrated by Grzegorz Domaradzki aka GABZ. It fills me with love for yellow and purple. Or violet. Whatever you want to call it. I’ve never seen faces illustrated with such grace in the color purple. I love them so much I can barely believe it. I’ve read CLONE magazine only a couple times, I think they were sitting in the waiting area at Rhymesayers. The inside’s pretty interesting, but the cover is where it’s at.

Street artist Sam3’s been up to some good, goodness sake. Look at these two newest works of his, both of them gigantic black figures rolling away the bad vibes of the billboards they live at. What a spectacular gesture. It doesn’t even have to be about advertising, it’s just that excellent. These were painted with simple black acrylic/oil/mixed paint, whatever was free at the time, painted with rollers on long sticks. See the other one below.

What designer / filmmaker Kurt Ralske has done is to create a program which searches two full-length films and finds the two frames which are most similar, one from each. The programs compares only shapes within the image, yielding wild results the naked eye might never have glued together. Most excellent!
