Not the kind of star map that you use to find Steve Buscemi’s house, but the kind you use to find the “Artie” constellation. As the city of Paris is often or at least sometimes called La ville lumière aka City of Lights, the wonderful design mind that goes by the name Clémentine Tantet decided to see it in space. And what’s more identifying of a city than it’s train map? So thus is this: a map of the Paris Underground made into a map of the stars!

This photo is part of a brief project that goes by the name “Sea Creatures,” made by designer Paul Fuog during a post held at Stefan Sagmeister’s Experimental Outcamp. That’s a load of words. Paint on objects. Just a blob. Extremely clean. That’s what we’re dealing with here. Super splendid!

What designer / filmmaker Kurt Ralske has done is to create a program which searches two full-length films and finds the two frames which are most similar, one from each. The programs compares only shapes within the image, yielding wild results the naked eye might never have glued together. Most excellent! I bet you didn’t know that the average Wii controller has all kinds of guts like this. Guts. I’ve seen a lot of guts projects lately. That one with the lego guy turning around and around, those KAWS Dissected Companions from a few years ago. It’s no longer a joke! But that’s ok, that’s not what this is about anyway. It’s about how physical therapists are using the Wii to help their patients gain muscle strength by playing games! Yay Nintendo!

If you can get all excited about this, thank a design teacher! Or thank your reading teacher. Did they have that? Reading class? I don’t even remember. Anyway I’m finding out that the people who do illustrations for magazines and periodicals using ink, paint, pencil, sculpture, whatever, are amongst the wildest thinkers. Their objects don’t have to work, so they’re free in a way a real-life Industrial Designer never can be. But it’s gotta look good. And this standardized test form looks ace.

Jeff McLane is a graduate of CalArts with a bachelor in Photography and Media. He was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, but chooses to spend his time in Los Angeles, California for some reason. His many excellent collections include such gem sets as Mechanical Reproduction, Solaroids, Property Lines, and Records. Keep a spy eye in the sky for excellent attention to color and hard-iron composition.
