Each book comes wrapped in a white paper bellyband with tiny instruction on what the deal is plus address of where to buy more. Scott Colley of Rinse Design Studio presents a set of books based all around the mythology inside and outside the Seven Deadly Sins and their partners, the Seven Contrary Virtues. Learn everything you want to know, including what’s going to happen to you when you’ve done the worst! Also, each sin has a color, did you know that? With these books you can correctly sin the whole rainbow, back and forth. And in really nicely set type with fabulous fat underlines and hand-binding.

Hand binding. There’s basically nothing like being able to do amazing design with a kingly crown of hand-bound pages. It rocks, it’s inexpensive, and people flip out when the find out that you can sew. Words from Colley on the project at hand:

A collection of posters and small booklet focusing upon the mythology of the Seven Deadly Sins and their counterparts Seven Contrary Virtues. Each page is colour co-ordinated in accordance with the associated colours of each sin. Printed on sugar paper and 90gsm bulky newsprint.

Oh the loveliness of a presentation you shall have if you ever receive a promotional book from the desk of designer Nikole Gramm. She’s a master of the stab binding technique in that she’s made full use of the freedom it inflicts upon you. You stab bind a book because you want people to know that you can stab bind a book. You also stab bind a book because it lets you put in all kinds of different sizes of paper at no penalty to the integrity of the binding! It’s magnificent, and so is this. This is the promotional materials AND how-to book of Gramm’s, and it’s all right here right now.

Each first page of a section is marked as such in a way that’s available to you from the moment you’ve got the book in your hands, staring at you with lovely blinding yellow, blue, and white. Turn to whichever page you like and enjoy the fabulous type setting while you’re on your fancy exploration adventure. Then after you’ve marveled your way though, prepare to have your fancy struck again by a tiny how-to book done in a flip-book style! How fun!

Designer / Bookmaker / Illustrator Sami Foust has created a teeny tiny book. Five copies of a teeny tiny book. This book is called “Foust Feast” and it’s all about the foods that are served up at her extended family reunions. Ever so cute, ever so tiny. And with some ever-so miraculous hand-drawn letters and tiny stuffings, too.

Let me begin here by apologizing to you for not showing this artist earlier. Mike Brodie aka the “Polaroid Kidd” is a photographer who’s ushered his work into the houses of hundreds of patrons, photos, ironically enough in this sentence, of the homeless. Not homeless necessarily by necessity, but more likely and more often than not by choice. These photos are taken by Brodie and of his friends and associates. All along the road and all along the railroad tracks. All the way from Florida to California to Minneapolis and back again.

Now this collection, above and down there in the gallery, are from lots of different shows. I’ve done my best here to collect every image Brodie’s captured and allowed up on these internets. As far as I can tell, the last show he’s been in was in 2007, that being a group show with Chris Stain and Swoon. And he’s not the most internet-centric sort of fellow if you know what I mean, so don’t expect any online portfolio site coming soon.

The best link I can give you that might get you closest to him is Needles and Pens gallery in San Francisco. They’ve had a show of his before and I bet they’ll know how to find him.

It is an enjoyable, healthy, and important thing to do the same thing over and over again when you’re in this graphics field. It’s research, even when it’s a formula so simple as matchbook, pen, ink, strangeness from the inner workings of the outer spaces of the mind.

Holy crap welcome back to Graphic Design 1. Today’s assignment: How You’re Never Going to be Able to Design a Nice Book Cover. Designer Elsa Chiao scoffed at this assignment, and indeed threw it to the ground, smiting it as she did so. For Elsa Chiao excels at just that, the covers of books. She is so good, SO good, that this post is basically a shot-for-shot re-creation of her portfolio. You must see these books!

From Locke to China you are going to be spoiled! For this sort of thing is not easy. Expressing in some way in a moment the contents of an entire book, or an idea of the contents of a book to the degree that a person would want to devour it, this is not a skill that everyone has. Some of the greatest graphic designers cannot do it, some of the worst random Joes off the street CAN do it. It’s a strange thing. But it requires a skillset that Chiao certainly has! Glance upon these and enjoi!

Have a peek at one fantabulous book end! This wave is translated from an image done without the bookend in mind! It’s origin was a lovely digital painting by the name of “Uprising,” made by artist/design team KozyDan. If you look very closely at the sculpture, you’ll notice that that’s not wavebreak, it’s BUNNIES! Lots and lots of bunnies!

The peoples at Munky King toymakers contacted the team of KozyDan and asked them if they’d like to turn their image of the bunnybreak, aka “Uprising” into the 3D object you see here. They worked with sculptor Julie B to bring the bunny brigade to life.

The finished product will be a vinyl release of a much larger edition than 10, but for now, courage!

Here’s the new book cover for Sarah Palin’s sort of autobiography? Or whatever it is. I like the elephant and the bones the most. This cover was designed by A Tiny City Printing Press for Sarah Palin and Todd, who has retired from his job because he saw this cover and decided it was so good that he’d never harvest oil so good ever again. Goodness!

While we might have expected Palin to choose a bold and unadorned font like Impact (or perhaps Comic Sans), Palin’s team went instead with Linotype Didot. According to Typedia, the Didot family of fonts comes from the Didot family, who lived and worked in Paris in the 19th Century. While Pierre Didot published books and prints, Firmin Didot designed the typefaces. Linotype Didot was added much later, drawn by Adrian Frutiger in 1991. Typedia informs us that this font, with its vertical emphasis and bold strokes, is the “right choice for elegant book and magazine designs, as well as advertising with a classic touch.” However, as Anna notes, for all its elegance, Didot is only one “i” away from idiot. One of the best tiny books everyone should read is “Rich Dad Poor Dad.” There’s a ton of a bunch of different versions of this book but the message is: own things that gain value. Gain value, sell item, buy new item. Buy Donny Miller. Have some lols. Sell Donny Miller. Look at this amazing sculpture. It’s a book open to the best page in the whole world.

Commercial Art. A group of people coming together, spending millions of dollars, just to get someone to buy a pack of gum. It warms my heart and it proves: people care.

As Emigre turns 25, FontFeed celebrates with a big huge post (you’ve gotta click that), and World Famous Design Junkies gets buckwild. I saw this fantastically red book cover that you see above* and said OH my goodness this is a good cover. The colors. The colors are so lovely I can scarcely believe it. This doesn’t happen just every 10 minutes, so I said to myself then that it was time, OMFG!

This book, designed and edited by Emigre co-​founder and designer Rudy VanderLans, is a selection of reprints, using original digital files, tracing Emigre’s devel opment from its early bitmap design days in the late 1980s through to the exper i mental layouts that defined the so called “Legibility Wars” of the late 1990s, to the critical design writing of the early 2000s.

Emigre No.70 is a must have book for those who missed out on all the excitement the first time around and for those who have been long time Emigre fans alike. Any graphic design library would be incom plete without it.

It is a powerful designer indeed who can not only set type, not only illustrate, but also pull the entire day-glo library out and put it in a blender and pour the contents into a Diary Queen Blizzard of a collection of works called ICONBLAST!

Your friends and mine, Minneapolis print duo Aesthetic Apparatus, conjure up a vast collection of test prints from all across their print library. As each color comes from each different print project, it is the skilled pulling of each bit of each unfinished test sheet that makes for a good final piece.

Some unnamed street artists (unless you’ve got some good graffiti interpretation skills) let loose the colorsplosion upon some unsuspecting cargo trains on Broadway and Johnson in North Minneapolis.

Designer Dylan Mulvaney’s three-dimensional colortastic font for Manhattan Magazine is slick.

Another adventure into Minneapolis street art, this time up in Uptown. This is part of a gigantic collection of photos from Intermedia Arts – layer upon layer of lovely, lovely paint.

Photographer Jeff McLane places a color chart in the desert.

International photographer super-deluxe Erin Nicole Johnson captures Toronto’s own Honest Ed’s.

Next, we’ve got poster artist Tyler Stout with this fabulous Flight of the Conchords screenprint. Basically a billion colors, all of them precisely sliced.

During a camera battle for a colorful prize I can only imagine has something to do with the ruling of the entire universe, Akif Hakan Celebi manages to photograph a collection of naturally fantastic architectural colors on the streets of Turkey.

In a moment of genius that almost eclipses the rest of this set of underwater pictures, photographer James Cooper finds the distribution of pink spraypaint to be a new experience in the H2O.

This is mine. It is my favorite. It is a painting I acquired at the estate sale of the late James Burnley. The nunery and churchery is unsurpassed.

Aesop and the Brothers Grimm stories told with a neonic fantasmagorioum of color from who knows what dimension, as illustrated by Yiorgos Yiacos of 12×2 Design Group.

Producer / Artist / Rapper Pharrell Williams collaborates with International Superartist Takashi Murakami to create this Art Basel super-piece entitled “Simple Things” — 26,000 individual fine gems direct from the rainbow later and you’ve got Jacob the Jewelers most colorful (and expensive) project yet!

EXACTLY what I’ve been looking for. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been in a bind with a creaky bit of wood. Now the whole world can look upon the fantastic products of the “WalMart for Superheroes” – 826 National. Yes, this fabulous line of shops has come out with a catalog, essentially cataloging each of their whacky diverse collection of unique items. This book is called “Essentially Odd.”

This book covers all of the 826 series of stores, which are listed as thus: Pirate Store, Greenwood Space Travel Supply Company, Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co., The Boring Store, The Echo Park Time Travel Mart, Liberty Street Robot Supply & Repair, and Bigfood Research Institute.

The general concept for the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Company store, from the beginning, was that it was a kind of Lowe’s or Wal-Mart for Superheroes. So I’m sure you’re all familiar with the early 1900′s French poet Jacques Prévert, right? He was a poet primarily, but also a surrealist collage artist(!) and had some excellent coffee breaks with Raymond Queneau and Marcel Duchamp. Talkin about toilets.

Turns out he’s got some pretty bizarre collage skillz that World Famous Design Junkies just happens to have a collection of. What do you know! Take a peep!

That poem is by our main man in 1900′s France, Jacques Prévert. Now check out his collage collection. Many of them are included in a book that was made of his collected collage works, a book called… can you guess… “Jacques Prévert Collages.”

Nick Sanchez has a design portfolio on the internet and indeed Nick Sanchez is a designer. I want to show you at least a couple things that he’s done. One of them is this book called “Designers on Design” which has a quote that goes “Try something else. That took me fucking forever to figure out.” – Chip Kidd. The other is the picture above: the mutant poster holder technique.

I swear not a week goes by where I don’t find a new way to hold a poster. You know the ones used most often: that one where the designer holds the poster with their hands, holding it up in front of them, covering up their face – then there’s the one where it’s just those black clips holding the poster up on the wall.

We’ll here’s a new one! It’s a mutated designer! Four hands for three posters – just fabulous I tell you! Now look at the other things Sanchez has for you!

Disenfranchised youth! That’s what we’ve got here. Design concious fantastique photographer Pietro Cocco concocts this project entitled “MY GENERATION IS (IN)DIFFERENT” – a set of photos with dates ranging from 2000 to 2010. Each photo is meticulously set up and designed, each one features dated and timeless elements relating to rebellion, careful activity, and the lack thereof. Each picture is bright, precious, and soullessly full of heart. It’s difficult to describe my generation (the same generation, basically, that Cocco covers here, and he’s done it so well.

MY GENERATION IS (IN) DIFFERENT
The project originated from a reflection on my generation, the so-called
Generation Y, that of technology, reality shows, the Internet, information and immediate answers. Precisely this ease of acquiring information is called the project, the generation is indifferent to what happens outside their everyday reality. The news, even the most bloody, passing through the communications media are perceived in today’s so far from those receiving it. It is unconsciously anesthetized than the worst disasters to events as more positive, much to get there, symbolically, to have hung on their walls without worthy of attention.

Not often, but sometimes, the title of the object you are doing a post about – is so good- that you’ve just got to use that title for the post. And here is that post. A Dummy Goes to Africa. A book about a man and his dummy, or should I say a dummy and his man. Only a few pages are available of this treasure, and the cover, so treasure them strongly.

This book is owned by the renowned oddity collector Nurse Marbles. Mostly she’s got books and older illustrations of medical procedures. All funtastic!

Now on to this treasure! The dummy! What a book this is, my my. Autographed by non other than Rod Cameron himself. And oh, what’s this? I found a bunch more information about Rod and his dummy! I bet you didn’t see that one coming, did ya!

Rod is an internationally known Christian ventriloquist of professional ability, using his dummy Gabriel Jeremiah Cameron (Gabby), a wooden dummy purchased by 4 men of the Fountaintown church and Oscar, a stupid python hand-puppet made by Bev. They have presented programs in 20 states and in 1991 did a cross-cultural tour around the world, presenting programs in New Zealand, Australia and Zimbabwe. They have been on TV and Radio and were featured five times in the late Dr. George Crane’s “Worry Clinic,” a nationally syndicated newspaper column. Rod has written two autobiographical books: “A Dummy Goes to Africa” and “A Dummy Goes to Church Camp.” He has produced an audio tape: “A Dummy with an Attitude.” The last two are available for $5.00 plus postage.

Let me tell you right away – this post is about a project made by designer Xavier Barrade. It’s the first post on World Famous Design Junkies about him, and it definitely will not be the last. His stuff is flat out fantabulous. Unique and wild. This book project is right up there. Up in outer space with the wild factor. It’s a project called “The Book” and it’s all about the presence of the book. The book on the book.

The book is everywhere. It’s not going away, no matter how hard people try to tell you. And they will if they haven’t already. They will try to tell the book away from your mind so hard. But don’t pay them any mind! Take a peek at this Barrade project and note to yourself how often a book plays a role in your life, even if it’s never opened.

Believe that. The category be books.

The pictures below are from the book but also show the book itself. The book IS the subject: black with white borders. The subject IS the book: if you hold the book in your hands and look through it, you’ll see pictures of it.

When I myself happen to be out and about fishing around some garage sales, boot sales, and estate sales, you can bet that when I buy a book, it’s not for reading. Strange, yes? Seems it’s not a centralized phenomenon. Here we have designer Isabelle Vaverka‘s take on the book, or, as she displays here, her book collection. Showing on each book only the emotions and memory she places on the object, no inner content allowed!

The project is called “THE BOOK” and it’s as much a protest as it is a design exercise. As you can see, details about each object, each book, are written on the front of the book in black. The body of the book is white, and the container of the whole collection is constructed to place importance on each individual.

What a bookshelf!

Today there are thousands of possibilities to download literature
in a digital form. Nevertheless I regard the book first of all as an
object. My goal is to visualize my memories that are purely connected
with these objects. I researched the identity of my own books without
dealing with their content, but rather focusing on their history and
my relation to the objects themselves. All these memories are fixed
in a bookshelf that is adapted by a personal collection of literature;
research project; June 2009

Concentrate on the finger and you’ll miss all that heavenly glory.

Typography is a fickle pickle. Especially if you’re trying to sell it. What we have here is a book made by the designer / typographer of the font Ringbearer. What Jason Arias has done here is to create a font lovingly inspired by the trunks of trees, then to make a book that’s yes! yes! resembling just that. The rings of the tree are the pages of the book, and in the end is a niche containing a fold-out poster that displays the whole font.

Typeface design, “Ringbearer,” and an unconventional type specimen book that relates my letterforms to the rings in the cross section of a tree.

Lovely! Check out the gallery of this book, including type examples and basically the “making of” before that lovely little poster at the end. They must have taken Kevin Wade Shaw‘s advice. Also take a peek at this bonus : the font applied. Jason Arias has this redesign of the magazine “Shambhala Sun” as a separate, yet partnered project to the font. A bit of a good presentation if I do say so myself:

Lovely wooden peeps! World Famous Design Junkies has a bunch of good design, but imagine this, there’s a specific category for typography! It’s pretty specific. It’s also pretty good and stuff – typographically-wise.

Well, here we’ve got some pretty-faced rules for typography in a nice little book. Hand-held, just my kinda book size, easy to transport and look upon. Made for a class project by the typstro of London and Dublin; Karen O’Neill. Look upon the book and follow da darections.

The challenge of this brief was to produce a book communicating ten fundamental elements of typography in an original and informal manner. This lead to the idea of the Ten Commandments, which are a classic example of a series of rules. I devised my own set of Type Commandments solely aimed at Graphic Designers. – Karen O’Neill

Let’s get this out of the way first: the tiniest book, I will forever say, was made by a hero of mine, the Book Queen, miss Jody Williams of Flying Paper Press. Here’s another one. Another tiny book. This one comes with an amazing package. The package is a magnifying glass and a tweezers to read the book. Fantastic.

MINIATURISATIE

Elektronica en technologie worden steeds kleiner en verfijnder. De computerchip echter is op een punt gekomen dat het in strijd is met de ‘Wet van Moore’, die chips in staat acht per half jaar met een percentage te verkleinen. Dit brengt veel problemen met zich mee, met onbruikbaarheid en defectie tot gevolg. Boekje is een vertaling van de onbruikbaarheid van onze technologie, met een inhoudelijk verhaal over chips en technologie.

It’s da full package I say! The artist / designer, Wilfred van der Weide, is straight outta School of the Arts Utrecht. That seems like the good place to go.

Booksmart is the right word here.

Miniaturization

Electronics and technology are becoming smaller and more sophisticated. The computer however is a point where it contradicts the ‘Law of Moore,’ who is eight chips in each half-year with a rate reduction. This brings many problems with ineffectiveness and defectie result. Book is a translation of the ineffectiveness of our technology, with a substance story of chips and technology.

Serious I need to get back on the artist book tip. Wild.

That’s not the real title of it! I think the project is UNTITLED at the moment. See and fall in love with the pretty pretty people in the comics of Anna Bongiovanni This one is part of her senior project at the MCAD. It’s about a circus performer named Ebbe.

Here are some finished/near finished pages from the first story of my senior project. In no order at all. So Far I have SIX pages scanned and done!! I have more inked but am tweaking them still.

Some things kinda bother me *cough*craft*cough*neatness*cough* and I’m trying to get better but the process I use, which so far has worked the best for me, is also the messiest…. OH WELL. It works for me!
