Behold! From on high comes the clicker of a god. Or of GOD! Designer of unconventional things Michael Wong brings you this single campaign for international shipping company DHL. Can you guess what it’s promoting? It’s 24 hours a day tracking of course! As a direct result of this campaign which was centralized around Beijing’s business district, concerned calls about package location went down, and online click counters to the tracking webpage surged. How much exactly is a secret, but the true loveliness of this project is, of course, the giant mouse arrows traveling about the city on DHL yellow delivery vans.

Hooray! Minneapolis hero gigantic mural painter Isaac Arvold has a new project on his hands here, and he hands it right over to World Famous Design Junkies to put on blast! And so here it is, a relatively mega painting on canvas, 12 feet by 12 feet square, painted, drawn, then painted by Arvold, assisted in part by Paper Tiger*. The painting in question here features Hennepin Bridge & Grainbelt Beer sign from the north side of Minneapolis. They’ve sort of been overgrown by some vine-ridden growth and doughnuts. That’s what Minneapolis really is, so it’s very appropriate to show the truth here I think. To tune up the interactivity of this project, Arvold took a huge long video of the entire process, 10 days mashed into a little over 4 minutes of video.

*Paper Tiger, aka John Samels, is also a Minneapolis hero, as he is a DJ in the rap supergroup Doom Tree. I think you’ll find, if you take a look, that quite a few of the talented ladies and gentlemen in the Minneapolis art and music scene(s) are pals.

It’s a big fun creativez tea party!

The music you’re hearing is comprised of beats strung together skillfully by Paper Tiger, who incidentally has his first solo record due out later this year.

This painting took 10 days from start to finnish, 12 to 17 hours each day.

AND after it’s all done at the photographers booth, it will be looking for a home! So if you know anyone who takes in homeless canvasses, give a peep!

Street artist Sam3‘s been up to some good, goodness sake. Look at these two newest works of his, both of them gigantic black figures rolling away the bad vibes of the billboards they live at. What a spectacular gesture. It doesn’t even have to be about advertising, it’s just that excellent. These were painted with simple black acrylic/oil/mixed paint, whatever was free at the time, painted with rollers on long sticks. See the other one below.

Above you can see the image called : “In The Autumn Leaves Fall.” Below you’ll find a collection of similar works by Sam3, followed by the other most recent work of his, “Getting Through The Back Door.” Both of these works were done in the past few days (14th of October and 19th of October, 2009.)

Nice rip, Sam3!

SAM3 is an artist that paints big (and we mean big) as well as small shadows and silhouettes in his urban surroundings. Sometimes ironic, other times poetic, always thought provoking, his work is more than a pretty picture.

Born in Elche, Spain, SAM3 currently lives and works in Madrid, Spain. His large street murals are certainly hard to miss to say the least and can be found across much of Europe.

Noone can resist that title. This is a project by one Emanuele Nardoni, a photographer from Milan who likes to hit the road and the airplane and basically go on the photo outings that you WISH you could go on. This one’s set in Tokyo and I believe in the surrounding areas, and it is titled, yes, “Made in Japan.” And it’s lovely. Just fantastical. My favorite photo is the one above “This is My Art” because although it’s sort of totally self-referential, juvenile, silly, goofy, I think it’s right on cue. I wonder if it’s tile, sticker, wood, or what?

Hot dogs! Oh my goodness hotdogs! Coney Island Dogs. That’s what’s up. We’ve got a place around here (Minneapolis, Minnesota) called Uncle Frankey’s. Perhaps you’ve heard of it. They make amazing Coney Island Dogs. Supposedly they’re better on the REAL island, but who knows! These people do. And when I say these people, I mean all the people who took the photos included in the super insanely huge World Famous Design Junkies Coney Island Sign Explorer Collection. Oh wow the signs. Look at them all!

Ah yes, the island. All of these photos are straight off the island. Coney Island was the biggest park in the USA between 1880 and World War II, but now it’s sorta… fading… but that’s alright! It’s still insane! It’s a fast collection of fantastically clean painted signs and erratic, calculated oddities. And of course, the lights at night, or as we love to call signs of just this nature: Night Type.

BEHOLD, and be held… by the excellence.

Ironically, “Coney Island hot dog” describes a product that is unknown in its namesake, Coney Island, New York, where hot dogs (usually called “franks” from frankfurter) are traditionally made only from beef and served plain or with sauerkraut on a bun without other adornment except the availability of mustard, which at Nathan’s was applied by the customer. The only reason for the name is the generic hot dog’s origins in Coney Island, where it said to have been invented by Charles Feltman in 1867, who put a Vienna sausage in a roll and called it “Coney Island Red Hots.” Some people, unsure of its ingredients, called it a hot dog. Different references claim that the locals thought the sandwiches reminded them of Feltman’s ever-present companion, a dachshund, called a wiener dog even back then,and the term hot dog became a popular term. – WEEKII

Hooray for photographer Landry A! It’s a fabulously graphic-minded photo-taker who covers both au-natural photographs AND unnatural design. I jest, of course, as all good design is natural as the grass. What L.A. has done here is to keep a photo series going of all the excellence in the several countries Landry is able to visit on a regular (and irregular) basis. The set you’re about to peek and flip through is out of Africa. Black and white and color are two separate sets, I’m sure you’ll be able to tell which is which.

Just what is Ax-Man Surplus, do you ask? We simply defy a simple description. For over thirty years we have been serving the creative and practical needs of the Twin Cities community. Simple to say, there aren’t any stores around simply like this!

Imagine going to one store and finding yards and yards of different materials, all kinds of wierd hardware parts, porcelain and plastic body parts, bizarre millitary odds ‘n’ ends like gas masks and dummy rounds, capacitors and power supplies, art materials, office products, and coffee pots- All in the same place!

Usually when people hear the word “surplus”, the words “used” and “defective” also come to mind. THIS IS A MYTH!When we say surplus, we mean merchandise that is new and in fine working order, but someone just had more on hand than needed, or items whose intended application just didn’t do it justice…

Converse hired Anomaly to do this fabulously strange ad campaign for their new customizable shoe line (no more info on this but that’s not what matter) – what matters is the wicked wildness of these strange machinations. Together and apart, I bet I know what tools they used but my goodness, my goodness it does that line credit! Discover for yourself the alternate universe of Anomaly. NOTE: not to be mistaken for the new album by Ace Frehley. Also that album is awesome. Frehley’s Comet for life.

EDIT: there’ll be posters up on the streets of New York City starting the week this post is posted (today is September 15, 2009). Exciting!

The eyes! It’s all in the eyes! There’s also some animated interactive ads floating around the internets which you may have seen recently, they’re neat too. Frightening also, of course. Look at these, then look at your own animal pets. Discover the beast within.

Nice typographics! Nice typographies that’s what this has. It’s got nice style and nice pinkness. I didn’t go inside, if that’s what you’re up on, but I did find something lovely behind the building. Explore with me, if you will, the wonders of the exterior of the building that goes by the title “Jake’s Exotic Dancers.” And if you’re lucky, you might just get more than you bargained for (a pdf file!)

Exciting development! Since I started posting this post, I’ve discovered a wonderful PDF file that relates directly to Jake’s. Turns out that some time in 2002, the city of Coates, Minnesota (where Jake’s is located) tried to outlaw erotic dancing in their city limits (or something to that effect.) This PDF that I just came across is a several page, nicely typed appeal to the higher Minnesota courts asking that Jake’s first amendment rights be upheld so that the ladies could shake their booties forevermore.

That PDF is so importante!

Thing is, I don’t know what happened to that case, so I don’t know if you can even go in Jake’s anymore at all! The signs are sort of decrepit (as you can probably see), but there was a pretty fresh car parked behind the building. So who knows!

So I’m sure you, being a rather wild person, were one of the 10 people that went to see the 2009 version of Land of the Lost – me too! I’m surprised I didn’t see you there! Well check it out. That movie was jammpacked full of pop-culture and brand-references because the idea of the Land of the Lost is that it’s a publishers clearing house of time and space! So of course there’s going to be Virgin Recording Studios spaceship, a tyrannosaurus rex, and an Urban Outfitters. Of course! And who concepted the heck out of all those things? This man right here, conceptual artist extraordinaire, Nathan Schoeder.

When you take a peek at these concept shots (below) you might say to yourself “wtf is going on here?” and that’s exactly right. Because that was the entire aim of the Land of the Lost tv series, and now it’s even MORESO the aim of the film. Giant crabs and sleestack creatures and hotel-motels and the Golden Gate Bridge and all sorts of wackiness!

Nathan Schoeder has worked as a concept artist in the motion picture industry since way back in time, (all the way back to the 1990s!,) creating artwork for such films as: X Men, Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of The Crystal Skull, Star Trek XI, Fantastic Four: The Rise of The Silver Surfer, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, National Treasure 2, Chronicles of Narnia, and more.

And very soon (I hope) we’re gonna see some of his work on TRON LEGACY holy mother! This post is a part of the World Famous Design Junkies 3D category. Because it’s totally 3D! And of course it’s part of the conceptual category too.

As Emigre turns 25, FontFeed celebrates with a big huge post (you’ve gotta click that), and World Famous Design Junkies gets buckwild. I saw this fantastically red book cover that you see above* and said OH my goodness this is a good cover. The colors. The colors are so lovely I can scarcely believe it. This doesn’t happen just every 10 minutes, so I said to myself then that it was time, OMFG!

This book, designed and edited by Emigre co-​founder and designer Rudy VanderLans, is a selection of reprints, using original digital files, tracing Emigre’s devel opment from its early bitmap design days in the late 1980s through to the exper i mental layouts that defined the so called “Legibility Wars” of the late 1990s, to the critical design writing of the early 2000s.

Emigre No.70 is a must have book for those who missed out on all the excitement the first time around and for those who have been long time Emigre fans alike. Any graphic design library would be incom plete without it.

It is a powerful designer indeed who can not only set type, not only illustrate, but also pull the entire day-glo library out and put it in a blender and pour the contents into a Diary Queen Blizzard of a collection of works called ICONBLAST!

Your friends and mine, Minneapolis print duo Aesthetic Apparatus, conjure up a vast collection of test prints from all across their print library. As each color comes from each different print project, it is the skilled pulling of each bit of each unfinished test sheet that makes for a good final piece.

Some unnamed street artists (unless you’ve got some good graffiti interpretation skills) let loose the colorsplosion upon some unsuspecting cargo trains on Broadway and Johnson in North Minneapolis.

Designer Dylan Mulvaney’s three-dimensional colortastic font for Manhattan Magazine is slick.

Another adventure into Minneapolis street art, this time up in Uptown. This is part of a gigantic collection of photos from Intermedia Arts – layer upon layer of lovely, lovely paint.

Photographer Jeff McLane places a color chart in the desert.

International photographer super-deluxe Erin Nicole Johnson captures Toronto’s own Honest Ed’s.

Next, we’ve got poster artist Tyler Stout with this fabulous Flight of the Conchords screenprint. Basically a billion colors, all of them precisely sliced.

During a camera battle for a colorful prize I can only imagine has something to do with the ruling of the entire universe, Akif Hakan Celebi manages to photograph a collection of naturally fantastic architectural colors on the streets of Turkey.

In a moment of genius that almost eclipses the rest of this set of underwater pictures, photographer James Cooper finds the distribution of pink spraypaint to be a new experience in the H2O.

This is mine. It is my favorite. It is a painting I acquired at the estate sale of the late James Burnley. The nunery and churchery is unsurpassed.

Aesop and the Brothers Grimm stories told with a neonic fantasmagorioum of color from who knows what dimension, as illustrated by Yiorgos Yiacos of 12×2 Design Group.

Producer / Artist / Rapper Pharrell Williams collaborates with International Superartist Takashi Murakami to create this Art Basel super-piece entitled “Simple Things” — 26,000 individual fine gems direct from the rainbow later and you’ve got Jacob the Jewelers most colorful (and expensive) project yet!

As you’d have to have lived under a rock on the moon not to be aware already, Shepard Fairey took it upon himself to create an image of Barack Obama during the 2008 USA presidential election season. As you might also know, that image was made into several prints, banners, shirts, anything you can print on, the most influential of which was the HOPE poster. Since the first Obama image Shepard Fariey created, there’s been a whole big bunch of events and images worth noting between the two. Below you will find a complete collection of the Barack Obama x Shepard Fairey affair.

Let’s get started, shall we? Updates in this post start at the bottom and work their way up. This post was created on August 6th, 2009, at which time Shepard Fairey did a press release for the illustration he did for the August 2009 cover of Rolling Stone magazine. Each release below that goes further and further back in time. In between each update you may find random extras. Below the text is all the images you’ll ever need!

OBAMA SO FAR

It’s been six-plus months since Obama took office, and the Rolling Stone cover is the first image of Obama I’ve created in that time. As a candidate, his vision and his message of shared civic duty were inspiring, but as president he faces an unbelievable pressure to accomplish what he set out to do, despite the reality that he can’t do it alone. Much like my “Hope” image was intended to express his vision and his intellectual diligence, I also wanted this new image to convey his focus, but with the added weight and stress of responsibility. Whether media like the New York Daily News are looking to fan conservative flames with “liberals think Obama is the messiah” talking points, or just saying things like that to create juicy headlines, it should be obvious that this image is not about anything divine, but about dealing with the real world job at hand. While he is undoubtedly our leader, the question I placed inside the presidential seal “Will he take bold action or compromise too easily?” is one that I think we all need to ask about ourselves and what we’re doing to work toward what we believe in. The pitfalls of “politics as usual” aren’t reserved for politicians.

However, a lot can and will change. As Joe Strummer of The Clash once said, “The future is unwritten.” In my illustration I make reference to Gilbert Stuart’s famous unfinished portrait of George Washington to capture the idea that, although we’re quick to judge, it’s too early to tell how Obama’s presidency will turn out. Hopefully Obama and all of us who have stood behind him will do everything we can to fill in our incomplete future the way we’ve pictured it. – Shepard (August 6, 2009)

According to extremely reliable sources from the Obama/Studio Number 1 camp, Shepard Fairey is in talks with the Smithsonian Institution to transfer a fine-art version of the Obama HOPE image to their National Portrait Gallery. If this deal goes down, the HOPE painting will be the “first official fine art rendering of the future president” in the Smithsonian collection. The painting in question is the one pictured above, having been displayed at least once at the “Regime Change” show at Irvine Contemporary.

I don’t need to mention that Shepard Fairey is a multiple convicted felon, do I?

In order to do our part to help OBAMA get elected, we started a grassroots campaign on a street postering level and now the OBAMA HOPE image is now part of history. We produced and distributed over 30,000 posters to be placed in windows, front yards, and businesses. We like to think we made a little difference.

In the spirit of OBEY we have a few of these posters left over from the campaign and there is no need to have them postered on the streets anymore so we would like to offer them to you. The proceeds of these posters will be going to the ACLU. These posters are signed by Shepard and are $40. We only have a limited quantity left so when they go, they will be gone.

Check out this link to a plethora of parodies of my Obama HOPE poster. I’m very happy that the HOPE poster has become such a point of reference. One parody that is not included is something I consider a high point in my career for pop culture recognition. Mad Magazine’s new cover is a spoof of my Obama image. I loved Mad as a kid. I think Mad’s satire heightened my understanding of irony and hypocrisy. I’m very excited to be a part of Mad’s history.

I believe with great conviction that Barack Obama should be the next President. I have been paying close attention to him since the Democratic convention in 2004. I feel that he is more a statesman than a politician. He was against the war when it was an unpopular position (and Hillary was for the war at that time), Obama is for energy and environmental conservation. He is for healthcare reform. This post is posted in the World Famous Design Junkies idenity category because more than anything other than that Obama “o”, Shepard Fairey’s image defined this 2008 election. Obama HOPE was Shepard Fairey and thousands and thousands of voters holding up his poster. Behold a graphic movement from the hand of a graffiti artist.

Jen Lamb works on a brief set by Mike Rigby at True North to design three typographically driven billboards to promote Londons 2012 Olympic Games. Looks pretty nice and easy to read, yes? Pretty intriguing, right? Take a peek closely below at what they be.

The words are made of nothing! But take a look at what they’re lined with: little rings made of the names of the countries that are set to take part in London 2012!

This set of billboards are a good way to see how important it is to take care of the visuals far away as well as seriously up close. When you’re far away from these boards, you see lovely words set in type with a nice multicolor environment surrounding them. Then since these billboards are set on the ground, the job is unique — people will be walking right up next to these big thangs, so there’s gotta be tiny detail! Because Miss Lamb understands this and is an amazing typographer, she’s got no trouble solving the problem: the tiny circles look very nice on their own, even at close range.

What a billboard combo. These billboards are for safe driving and fetal alcohol syndrome prevention, left and right. The one on the left says “Let’s get ice cream after you paralyze us” and the one on the right says “fetal alcohol syndrome. cured.” Aesthetically ironic.
