This bike right here sat, the day I saw it, in the parking garage next to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Childrens Museum, and MCAD. It sat down on the bottom level, lookin all good, all covered in stickers from face to rear. What you’re about to see is a sneak-snap documentation of this parked bike including each and I hope every sticker on it.

It’s got things you might recognize too, including a lovely Burlesque Design sticker right under it’s toothy grin.

If you’ll remember a few weeks ago, we posted some pics of a painting in process by a certain mister painter Isaac Arvold. At the time of the painting of the painting, Arvold was unsure of the final fate of the painting. Well look at this! This is one of the several new bike parking places for the city’s new biking initiative. On the endcap here we see the same painting we’re talking about sitting behind a biker on one of these green bikes!

Additionally interesting is the street that this is on – Hennepin – only a couple blocks away from the bridge that the painting depicts. How super!

But does your house have the ability to roll around? The folks houses in this set of photos doth have the ability to do as such. This is a set of photos taken by Alan W George that goes by the name “Wheeled Estate.” All of it’s below.

Here’s a few words from the artist / designer / photographer / collector extraordinaire Alan W George, on the subject of the set that we’re talking about:

San Francisco, California has the highest per capita rate of homelessness of any city in the United States. This fact can be attributed to many factors, including but certainly not limited to, the predominance of social liberalism, the year round reasonably mild climate and the relatively high cost of housing in the region. Homelessness manifests itself in a spectrum of living conditions, from living on the street with shopping cart and cardboard boxes to endless couch surfing. With this series of images I examine one of the more affluent homelessness conditions, vehicle (car/truck/RV/van/bus) camping. Specifically I typographically examine the vehicles which function as homes.

Isn’t it interesting how lowered the sense of worth becomes when a few wheels are attached to a house? On the other hand, when you take a peep at this whole set of photos here, they become definitely worthy of your eyeballs and mine.

Look at that green bus. Wouldn’t you like to drive it in the video game Twisted Metal? It would be such a fantastic adventure! Not to mention halve these other ones would be well-off containing hell of weapons and traps to blow up opponents.

Or to live in.

Although the title of this post suggests that you’d be crusing down the interstate in what’s about to be presented here, I wouldn’t recommend it. Right here we’ve got one frajabulous vehicle that’ been around for overy 60 years. In that time, this most excellent zoomer, the Piaggio “Ape”, has taken on only a few different shapes, and many many different colors. Popular to paint because of their small size and relative inexpensiveness compared to other smaller vehicles, these Apes don’t only come in black and white. Pronounced “ah-peh.” The name in Italian means the same and the flying insect bee. Fun. Lovely. Excellent.

These remind one very much of the Kei vans we did a post on a bunch of months ago. Both very small, very cute, and very versatile when it comes to the possibilities for their unique size and shape. The first thought that comes to mind when you see one of these Ape cars is that they must be delivering pizza.

If you agree OR don’t agree with that, just take a look at the pizza delivery pods that the folks from my home city drive to deliver their “Galactic Pizza.” Small, speedy, cute, and best of all electric powered. The Apes in this gallery could use a bit more electrics and a few fewer gasolines, but that’s not the point at the moment.

The point at the moment IS the color, the variety of shape and use, and the overall super neatness!

This is a commie bike. This severely red bike is a brand new concept design made by the undeniably talented designer / render magician Mikhail Smolyanov, aka Solif. Perchance you remember the other collected works post we did a couple weeks ago: [D.U. Motorcycle Madness]. Well! The cycle you see in this post is brand-spakin new bike from deep in the heart of the motherland. It goes by the name “Дух Победы (Spirit of Victory)” and is ready to crush some dirty Nazi skulls under its two shine-cased death wheels.

Original text from the designer:

Всех поздравляю с днем Великой Победы. Нельзя искажать, нельзя забывать. Остальные виды этого байка будут позже.

What that all translates to, loosely, is: “All Happy Victory. You can not distort, it is impossible to forget. Other species of this bike will come later.” Joyous day!

Smolyanov is master of iterations.

How would one drive such a bike as this? It’d be impossible to leave it parked anywhere because you’d be too afraid of anyone stealing or damaging it. Wouldn’t you? Maybe I speak for myself in saying I’d never ever be able to roll out on something so fantastically magical looking. Red is automatically delicious.

Communism’s failings aside, who WOULDN’T be proud to own such a lovely machine?

Ink on paper and wheel on street. That’s what Arkcrank is all about. Artcrank is a poster show that supports the bicycle culture in whatever city it’s taking place in. It began here in Minneapolis, and starting last year there was one in Denver too. I’m going to go ahead and make a bet that it doesn’t end there! A crew who want to be known as “Department of D.I.Y.” have posted some street signs designed to do nothing but inspire some courtesy. Bike accidents in Los Angeles are rampant. Not that they aren’t in quite a few places, (shout out to my homie who just got hit-and-run in Albany NY,) but in Los Angeles the people with the printers and wheatpaste and brushes are up on it. This is love for the greater good.

Also tied on to this movement (and submitted to us) is this question and answer manifesto from the crew, telling of why and what is going on:

Who? The Department of D.I.Y. is a vast group of concerned cyclists and commuters living in Los Angeles some of whom are victims of road rage, hit and runs and / or harassment, many of whom feel that motorists do not fully respect their rights to use our common streets, all of whom wish for a safer more amicable relationship with motor vehicle traffic.

Why? Because this beloved city of Los Angeles can’t, won’t or doesn’t care about the safety of vulnerable road users, the Department of D.I.Y. aims to make a broad appeal to drivers via the campaign. The message “Please Pass With Care” is not intended to be political, nor is it intended to criticize the driver’s choice of transportation mode, it is a simple message of empathy. It is an honest straight forward appeal to drivers to give bicycle riders a brake, some room on the road, and some common human respect. The lives of cyclists are literally in their hands.

Where? Everywhere people drive cars.

When? The sooner that the message gets out the better. A lot of blood has been spilled in the streets. Every week that goes by, another hit and run, or another close call, or another chilling case of harassment occurs. This can not be tolerated.

How? This public appeal is to be spread in a respectful manner in the public space with maximum visibility to drivers.

So these are being put up right now in Los Angeles first, then it would be awesome if they spread across the USA, because god knows the message needs to be shot out of a cannon. I love that they’re both in English and Spanish, that’s healthy growth. You know that people who don’t speak English can drive cars? Wow! And everyone has the ability to hit people on bikes. Please heed the call! Share the road with everyone!

D.U. = Such amazing concepts that I’ve just got to assume they’re from a Different Universe. Holy wow and oh my goodness gracious. The motorcycles you’re about to see are designed by Mikhail Smolyanov aka Solif. He’s a bad mofo and he likes to design auto-related projects. The one’s I’m featuring here are his motorcycle collection, starting above with the tube-like ARX and working down into the wildly colored tame bikes. Completely fantastic by the standards of the standard motorcycle you’d see on the real world street today.

Mikhail Smolyanov is Russian, and runs his own personal news blog over at http://solifdesign.blogspot.com/ – check it out. He posts new stuff all the time, and it’s ripe for the picking. And when I say picking, I mean you publishers, it’s your job to make this man famous, famous because he is amazing and I want these bikes to make it to the creator floor. Let’s futurize this place, mothers! Let’s make Solif real life!

The motorcycles you see below go in this order with names: ARX 2, ARX 3 (I don’t know what happened to ARX 1), ARX 3 Trike, Della, C-Org (this is the orange and yellow one we’re at now,) Speeder Mechanicus, Steampunk Style V2 Black Widow, and of course the Steampunk Style V1 Black Widow, which is the same but not the same.

Oh my god want. Want all. All want now. Mikhail Smolyanov’s weapon of choice is 3D Studio Max. Are you in to the rendering of 3D objects? Yeah I totally rendered an egg one time. It was amazing. But I’ll tell you what. I’ve seen a whole load of renderings whilst working for Yanko Design, and these are good. So, so very good.

It’s an epic thing to yell. It’s what everyone is wondering, when they’ve got a boyfriend who just can’t figure it out. I remember the last time I skidded. It was 1996 and I skidded all the way down a hill. I heard a loud POP and that was the end of that. Had to walk my bike all the way home. Luckily I’ve always ridden light bikes, so I just looked stupid and/or really buff! But you’ve got to look at this shirt for a sec. People in the UK, they like their fixed gear bikes. And so do you! This is the greatest car I have ever seen. I would literally drive this car. I am the sort of person that’s frightened to drive amazing cars because I know how easy it is to make someone jealous, inciting the milkshake or rotten egg attack, but this! This is magnificent! How could anyone ever attack such a fabulous moment in reality? Noone could. It is the perfect car. Truly it is unique, too, as it is a one-off prototype of the ever-so-sleek Alfa Tipo 33 chassis. These colors are unmatched in their coolness. This is now.

These images are from the magazine Auto Italia, Issue 124, October / November 2006. The fine people at Michael Ward Photos were kind enough to present these three photos of the magnificence. Someone! In the world! Tell me where this car is in the world today, tell it!

So you know, if you grew up in say, the West, you came across a little thing at some point or another in your life called model cars. When the “modern” age of model cars came along, it continued through my childhood and survived pretty nicely to this day, even unto to the day this post is born. Anyone who’s made cars with kits in their childhood (or in their inner-childhood) knows, and will tell you, that the most amazing, technical, and stylistically important part of the whole process is also the most fun: the stickers.

What you see below is a collection of sticker sheets from model cars going back to the 1960′s, a big portion of them collected by one fantastic enthusiast Brian Myers.

EDIT:: This collection started out with a set of 50 sticker sheets as collected by Brian Myers (who, incidentally, still has the best idea for them, as written below), but as I searched through this list: http://www.towerhobbies.com/rcwcar.html a lot bigger set was soon acquired by picking up one here, two here, five there. Now what Brian Myers aims to do is to not only collect these, but also to set them free! Yes! Though sheer willpower, Myers plans on recreating each of these strips with vector graphics, rendering them powerful enough to be re-printed in printing shops and re-distributed through him. Luckily for YOU, the preview of his project is right here in the first 50 images of the gallery you see below! As mentioned above, everything below that is otherwise unaffiliated but magnificent nonetheless.

Galactic Pizza is a recurring subject right here on World Famous Design Junkies because of its looks, its styles, and its Paul Bunyan combination style pizza. What this post is about is its delivery vehicles. Also, as you can see above, its delivery men. I’d love to have a post dedicated to the delivery men, or space men, but they are also ninjas, and aren’t often caught on camera.

The car you see above and below is delivering to Galaxy Pizza’s nearby neighbor and my alma mater, the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. The car and its compatriots are 100% electric powered, one man vehicles.

A bit of the mission statement of Galactic Pizza is as thus:

From our old pal Kevin Cyr comes this fantastic collection of paintings all done of motor vehicles, especially trucks. Each of these trucks is rusted and painted, marked to uniqueness by those art outlaws of the environment, those graffiti writers. Kevin Cyr paints each vehicle with loving grace, making real sure to translate each detail with specificity. More than 16 cars in all, all painted on canvas.

Wonderfully gorgeous urban artifacts, transformed to flatness by a modern-day naturalist, Kevin Cyr. He’s done several projects with cars, none so simply aesthetically pleasing as this one.

I commemorate commercial vehicles inundated with graffiti and rust, working vehicles, and well-traveled recreational vehicles. I find that there is so much character in old delivery trucks and vans — especially when covered with graffiti — and in the old RVs parked off a main road. Removing them from their everyday context gives them portrait-like importance. I paint with devoted attention to every imperfection and sign of age. – Kevin Cyr

Here at World Famous Design Junkies we LOVE explorations of cities, and G.H. here has his own manifesto about it. “Urban Notebooks” he calls it, his method for mayhem being seeing where people walk through cities he’s never been to, then going everywhere they don’t.

The places where people aren’t, that’s where we’re going here in Warsaw.

theorists like michel de certeau and henri lefebvre tell us that we can find meaning in cities through everyday practices. that people, in the course and movement of their everyday lives, define the spaces that they use and inhabit. this work pursues the meaning of urban place created through these prosaic spatial practices.

without reference to maps or books, people in cities become my guides to unfamiliar places. the work is made by following strangers as they go about their everyday lives. no-one is followed for long, not long enough for me to become concerned with them as an individual. the tension between individuality and the collective is an intrinsic aspect of the experience of modern cities. in this instance people act as a collective set of city dwellers who define their city and show it to me.

during my stay in these cities, each day was a different journey. the route and direction of each journey being dependent on the movement of the people i followed.

cities have been walked through for many years, there is a long tradition of exporation through urban wandering which includes the parisian flâneur of walter benjamin, the situationists’ dèrive and more recently, the psycho-geographic london journeys of iain sinclair.

in this work we are taken away from usual tourist routes and sites, we are led off the surface of visitors maps and guides to official histories. in this modern spectacle of the city, these notebooks are a product of observations.

The design elements, the graphic awareness is what’s sook. What have we got here? The shore area around Lake Ontario – one of the great lakes of North America. Taken in the question – “what if there was no lake?”

Colonized Waterways: Lake Ontario — My project is concerned with the shore region of lake Ontario. These photographs are a medication on the infrastructure and spaces that are dependent on the lake. The question is how much do these places create perception and shape ones relationship with a landscape? If Lake Ontario is perceived as a standalone character devoid of it’s surrounding how does that change the perspective? What’s the effect of framing it only through it’s context? The resulting view is a narrative that compared to the romance associated with Lake Ontario becomes a more difficult story to tell. -MF

Hot dogs! Oh my goodness hotdogs! Coney Island Dogs. That’s what’s up. We’ve got a place around here (Minneapolis, Minnesota) called Uncle Frankey’s. Perhaps you’ve heard of it. They make amazing Coney Island Dogs. Supposedly they’re better on the REAL island, but who knows! These people do. And when I say these people, I mean all the people who took the photos included in the super insanely huge World Famous Design Junkies Coney Island Sign Explorer Collection. Oh wow the signs. Look at them all!

Ah yes, the island. All of these photos are straight off the island. Coney Island was the biggest park in the USA between 1880 and World War II, but now it’s sorta… fading… but that’s alright! It’s still insane! It’s a fast collection of fantastically clean painted signs and erratic, calculated oddities. And of course, the lights at night, or as we love to call signs of just this nature: Night Type.

BEHOLD, and be held… by the excellence.

Ironically, “Coney Island hot dog” describes a product that is unknown in its namesake, Coney Island, New York, where hot dogs (usually called “franks” from frankfurter) are traditionally made only from beef and served plain or with sauerkraut on a bun without other adornment except the availability of mustard, which at Nathan’s was applied by the customer. The only reason for the name is the generic hot dog’s origins in Coney Island, where it said to have been invented by Charles Feltman in 1867, who put a Vienna sausage in a roll and called it “Coney Island Red Hots.” Some people, unsure of its ingredients, called it a hot dog. Different references claim that the locals thought the sandwiches reminded them of Feltman’s ever-present companion, a dachshund, called a wiener dog even back then,and the term hot dog became a popular term. – WEEKII

Hooray for photographer Landry A! It’s a fabulously graphic-minded photo-taker who covers both au-natural photographs AND unnatural design. I jest, of course, as all good design is natural as the grass. What L.A. has done here is to keep a photo series going of all the excellence in the several countries Landry is able to visit on a regular (and irregular) basis. The set you’re about to peek and flip through is out of Africa. Black and white and color are two separate sets, I’m sure you’ll be able to tell which is which.

This napkin right here is a convenience towel. It’s from a place called “Eddy’s,” it’s a lake resort along Lake Mille Lacs in Minnesota. It’s got a reel good idea, or had a real good idea a while ago. This particular towel is from the vast archives of “free stuff” my dad owns. This he brings with in his “hotel kit” which is brought along when it’s time to stay overnight at the casino with a free room or whatever he’s happened to win this month.

Oh ja! I love eBoy so much! They (eBoy group) have made my favorite conglomeration of pixel-made world scenes and vehicles and people and everything ever! Their pixels are absolutely lovely. This week, they’ve been commissioned to do the cover of DER SPIEGEL magazine. The commission includes a giant stop sign being constructed amidst internet signs of the most popular and wild sites for the headline “warum das internet neue regeln braucht” aka “why the internet needs new rules.”

Look at that thing! It’s very similar in content to another quite-recent work from eBoy for the Maker Faire. Internets signs galore! In this new one, see if you can find the following: flickr, skype, Google, YouTube, The Pirate Bay (exploding), Sex.com (retro!), del.icio.us, YouPorn, Yahoo, and look right below the S on the STOP sign, that’s the Spiegel bird, so cute!

Also watch out for nude pixel people!

Here it is. The camper bike. Artist / designer Kevin Cyr has created this fabulous monster with the “revolutionary heart” in mind. Cyr constructed this fully-functional piece both to use for camping and as a subject for a series of pictures. Paint, graphite pencil, and curious, inspired eyes are what makes this project fly!

Statement ::
In a culture in which people are easily lured by the appeal of status-enhancing symbols, I find beauty in derelict cars and unkempt landscapes. I have always been interested in painting vehicles and scenes that have defined the evolution of the American landscape.

I commemorate commercial vehicles inundated with graffiti and rust, working vehicles, and well-traveled recreational vehicles. I find that there is so much character in old delivery trucks and vans — especially when covered with graffiti — and in the old RVs parked off a main road. Removing them from their everyday context gives them portrait-like importance. I paint with devoted attention to every imperfection and sign of age.

Painting and drawing these objects gives me a chance to document a time and place, and to make still a part of the ever-changing environment.

What a wild mind Cyr’s is to interact with! Speak with him yourself if you wish to behold a free heart and a talented hand! A real celebration of the human spirit, Cyr is! Also ask him how he did it if you’d like to create your very own Camper-Bike.!

Hi you like collections of cute, crazy, and otherwise cuckoo automobiles, right? Well here’s one that should strike your fancy right up! This is Japanese mini-vans. Not to be confused with the ugly white-van epidemic that’s been plaguing the UK for some time now, no! These little thangs are just super cute.

What sparked my interest in this sort of collection was designer Shane Lat’s portfolio/project http://thingsthatwelearn.com/ -in it, he’s got the start of a Japanese Minivan collection with encouragement to search for more!

A tribute to the little vans and trucks most commonly found in Japan. Suited to their small, tight streets and spaces, these automobiles have a rich history and continue on in service today.

Welcome to the wacky world of rally racing! Did you see that Speed Racer movie a few months ago where they were racing at incredible speeds, crashing into one other, flipping, shooting up dust, exploding, et-cetera et-cetera? Rally racing is just like that in real life. I mean close. The cars they use to race on these dirt-track roads are stubby and agile, wild and wacky. Take a lookie at this collection of rally car shots bya hot cross-section of photographers, professional and amateur!

Rally cars are similar to NASCAR racing cars in that they’ve got sponsors and whatnot all over, but because rally cars are prone to fly through the air, flip, crash, and reveal all sides, you get views of their letters, numbers, and colors in a way unique to the rally setting. They even look lovely when they get giant crash dents!
