Dearest world, he says, I’m wondering if you, since you’re all fans of the greatest television animated series of all time, have any artwork from this series? That’s right, boys and girls! John K, the creator and main mind behind Ren and Stimpy is looking for your contributions! He’s creating some sort of fabulous bible-like construction for Spumco! You don’t know what Spumco aka Spümcø is?! Come on in then! You like to see fabulous illustrations of Ren and Stimpy characters?! Yes! We’ve got that here too!

As you may be well aware, John K, aka John Kricfalusi, is the big brain behind Ren and Stimpy and he’s got one FANTASTIC blog. It’s informative almost constantly to EPIC preportions! You can find it at http://johnkstuff.blogspot.com/ and I recommend you read it EVERY DAY!

Then there’s Spumco Inc. – it’s was an animation studio based in Los Angeles, California. They got their first big start when Nickelodeon shot a call out for new cartoons – one of the ones they chose was made by Spumco – Ren and Stimpy! After and before that there were a bunch of other works that were also pretty neat, take a peek at a list and get out your animation cells of those works too!

Now down to brass tacks. If you’ve got any original Ren and Stimpy artwork, that means hand-drawn, painted, otherwise, and would be so gracious as to let John K scan it at high-rez so as to print it in the up n coming Spumco book, that’d be great!

Hello you know about the band Massive Attack? They’re amazing. I remember finding out about them through the first Matrix movie, it’s the music Neo is listening to when you first see him there sleeping with headphones on. I bought the album that’s from (Mezzanine) and never looked back. What you’re about to see is a fantastic vision of death and destruction as circled around Massive Attack’s song “Splitting the Atom” from their album Heligoland (released 2.8.2010). This film is directed by Edouard Salier and I don’t recommend you watch it if you’re prone to easy vertigo.

Massive Attack is actually a production duo (I’d also call them a band) that’s classified as Electronica, Post-Punk, Pop, and Trip hop. Never really very fast music, always sort of calming, on occasion disturbing. Always very astounding. I would basically plan on purchasing this album based on this one track. And that’s real.

So it seems that there’s going to be a book coming out soon that’s a photo recounting of the Glow In The Dark tour that happened a year and a few months ago. The tour featured Kanye West as the headliner, Rihanna, Lupe Fiasco, and N.E.R.D.. It was pretty neat. People at the concert were told basically that if they took photos they’d be shot with lazers and chopped into bits. But we did it anyway. Here’s a bunch of lovely colors for you.

Some of the more flashy pictures you’ll see are actually of the crowd (because it was fabulous to see a sold-out arena all making the same hand movements) and of N.E.R.D. who just had one giant long LCD screen with lightening, water, disco balls, fire, everything going across it in flashing lights.

A couple of Rihanna, a couple of Lupe Fiasco, and a bunch of Kanye’s spaceship adventures.

Kanye, if you’re reading this: If you’d like these pictures to be taken down, just click and shout, otherwise take note of how medium-quality they are and see how it’ll more than likely sell some more books rather than hurt the movement of the pages.

This aint no Paul and Mike, this is Herrjaapmans vision for a more colorful world ala Jenny Lane’s song “Say Say Say.” Take a lovely little trot with your half-heels around the fun in the sun in this video and let loose your eyeballs at the cross-light of the stills.

Herrjaapmans and crew continue to spearhead my favorite trend basically ever in music videos, that being toned down 90% and bright explosion 10%. Every scene here is basically in the mid-low range of color with one or more colorsplosions in the lips, on the backdrop, on the paint jacket. Watch especially the first 10 seconds for a microcosm of the rest.

This trend started about a year ago with what I’d call “Hipster Brightness” – the same thing I just described having really blown up when the music video for L.E.S. Artistes blew up – (by everyone’s favorite super-hipster Santigold.)

And it’s still on fire!

WHOA watch where you throw that “furry” word there, this ain’t not cosplay. This is the world of puppetry. To be taken seriously. These are basically the guys who co-headlined a concert with Spinal Tap. These are the guys who make puppets! Such lovely puppets specifically for the high definition generation! They say so!

Here at the Furry Puppet studio, we believe that every puppet has a soul;
a certain richness and warmth that’s reminiscent of classic puppetry.
So we’ve taken the traditional skills and the fundamentals of classic puppet
building and revamped them for the new era: the era of high definition.

Ohmygosh! From foam sculpture to fur substitutes, this particular team of puppetrists are the doctor Frankensteins of the marionette world! Wait. That’s not puppets. These guys need a hand, not some sticks. It’s frightening how realistically amazing these amalgamations become at the fingertips of founder Zach Buchman and director of production Maria Gurevich. They’re craftsmen (craftspeople?) just as much as they are artists, just as much as they are designers. They work with the people who want puppets to create the puppet they need to their exact specifications.

The best part is that these people are thriving. In a world of animation, perfect special effects, and mile-a-second internetting, these hands-on-interactive specialists are doing really really well. I applaud thee!

Oh goodie shoes. Shoes on animals. Converse hired Anomaly to do this fabulously strange ad campaign for their new customizable shoe line (no more info on this but that’s not what matter) – what matters is the wicked wildness of these strange machinations. Together and apart, I bet I know what tools they used but my goodness, my goodness it does that line credit! Discover for yourself the alternate universe of Anomaly. NOTE: not to be mistaken for the new album by Ace Frehley. Also that album is awesome. Frehley’s Comet for life.

EDIT: there’ll be posters up on the streets of New York City starting the week this post is posted (today is September 15, 2009). Exciting!

The eyes! It’s all in the eyes! There’s also some animated interactive ads floating around the internets which you may have seen recently, they’re neat too. Frightening also, of course. Look at these, then look at your own animal pets. Discover the beast within.

This post is a part of the World Famous Design Junkies Unnatural Nature category. Because even though that lion mouse chipmunk bird thing is just the cutest little thing ever seen, it just makes me feel like perhaps maybe it isn’t a real thing.

Graphic designer Alexander Peterhaensel gets a little fancy on all yer collective faces with a project which mathematically graphictastically translates some recordings of some music by JSBach. Note that JSBach is everyone’s favorite composer too. Just for good measure.

What do you do with them? You take them, that giant pile, and you give them to World Famous Design Junkies – who will then promptly post this sort of “Junkyard” post. Fabulous! Below you will find some wacky and wild concoctions from the graphic splattering brain of Yotam Hadar. He has a love for strangeties and has the incalculably valuable ability to design in English, Arabic, Jibberish, and who knows what else!

First off, take a peek at this album artwork. It’s newly online, and it’s totally kewl. It’s designed and executed by designer Philip Kennedy for the band Funeral Suits. It’s collage work mostly, with some lovely typography on top. Just so nice!

Not oft is a person able to do nice collage that also looks so naturally lovely. Collage work is a finicky partner that way. And then it’s also translated well across a few media, too. Well played. BONUS there’s a music video Philip Kennedy also worked on.

Re-Up : In celebration of the life of musician / entertainer Michael Jackson, World Famous Design Junkies presents to you what we believe is one of the greatest internet-based tributes ever conceived: the White Glove Tracking project. This project takes Michael Jackson’s Motown 25th Anniversary performance of Billie Jean, tracks the most important part of it: the white glove, and turns it into data. Once the glove is tracked, the data can be utilized in an infinite amount of different ways. This project was initiated in 2007 and contributions continue today.

Michael Jackson’s spirit: rest in peace; your ghost in the machine will never be allowed to rest. The white glove forever!

On May 4th, 2007, we asked internet users to help isolate Michael Jackson’s white glove in all 10,060 frames of his nationally televised landmark performance of Billy Jean. 72 hours later 125,000 gloves had been located. wgt_data_v1.txt (listed below) is the culmination of data collected. It is released here for all to download and use as an input into any digital system. Just as the data was gathered collectively it is our hope that it will be visualized collectively. Please email links to your apps, video, source code, and/or screen shots to evan[at]eyebeam[dot]org. Work will be exhibited in an online gallery and depending on popularity and interest potentially in a forthcoming physical gallery exhibition as well. Huge thanks to everyone that contributed to the data collection.
