Remember that one time when DC and DT got together for tea? Here’s the extended look at the meeting between find artist / graffiti artist David Choe and actor / superhero Danny Trejo. Above and below you’ll see some photos and some looks at the new artwork made when they met, painted by David Choe, and a video of Choe speaking about how they met (at “comic con” which I’m sure means SDCC) and what they’re doing, and how he’s painted a couple different portraits now of the scariest most menacing face in the history of the world and star of the new Mexploitation film Machete, Danny Trejo.

You’ve gotta watch this video. Trejo “reveals” the titles of the next Machete movies: Machete Kills and Machete Kills Again, then Machete in Outer Space! Then I wont give it away but Choe reveals the final movie title in the series… or is it?! Who can tell. SA Studios Global presents this video:

Then below you’ll see a gallery of pics from their meeting. In this gallery you’ll note one image of Trejo face-to-face with a painting of a face that looks rather like him. It’s not – instead it’s the other most wheathered-faced person in the world, Charles Bukowski. Choe says these are the first two males he’s painted since he was in grade school. He’s lying, but it’s fun to think so, yes?

Who loves monster magazines? I love monster magazines. It must be a strange life, investigating and reporting on the world as it’s affected by monsters. As the monster turns toward the audience and says “people!” running away in a dash, the reporter takes a flash, another front page for Famous Monsters magazine. This post focuses on that, the Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine series, in particular the covers. So rip off your safety belt, jump out of the car, and run screaming into the woods, because it’s time for MONSTER MAGAZINE COVER MADNESS! Presented in technicolor!

Don’t move a finger, a hair, or a heart, cause this is about to get real wild. Creatures featured in any manner of ways, the covers centralized on one monster each. It’s like a portrait of the grotesque on most of these magazine fronts, only a few derivations for sneaky fantastic or otherwise cooky special editions.

The following is a collection of images prepared and executed by a designer that goes by the name “Data Driven Decision Making” and, in addition to being a designer, is what I’d call a magician. Maybe a color magician. Not just color though, arrangement of mathematically perfect squares in a way that makes anyone who glances upon them glance twice. This has to do with not only making things beautiful, but in accessing the minds of all the people who will most likely see these images, taking their collective visual experiences and molding those into engaging singular images.

So here they are, Data Driven Decision Making conglomerations. In this collection of his images, you’re bound to find some engaging experiences. This, though not necessarily more or less than everyday lovely graphic design, will bring you to a new place in your day. These images will move you one square in any direction.

For this occasion I’ve got to offer up this modified/chopped version of words from poet W. H. Auden: “Silence the pianos and with muffled drum. Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come. Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead. Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead. The stars are not wanted now: put out every one; Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun; Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood. For nothing now can ever come to any good.” Truly it is an epic moment for the artist who brought us decades of undeniably epic fantasy art, Frank Frazetta, is dead.

This man was a fantasy artist, completely and utterly. He painted and drew, illustrations that cannot be touched now or then or anytime. He worked on cover art for novels, comic books inside and out, movie posters, album covers, and every sort of painting small and large for the sale to the rich.

This past November, a cover art painting he did for Conan the Conquerer sold to an unnamed collector for $1million bucks. This was such big news that WIRED had a flip-out session about it. He did the utterly wild covers of Molly Hatchet albums, covers and insides of Vampirella, and yes, yes! the movie poster for Beastmaster. Plus a whole big batch, nest, mountain of other works.

I only mention the Beastmaster poster because it’s mentioned in the forever-classic graffiti film Style Wars. Frank Frazetta was an influence to shitloads of people, the readers of the fantasy novels he covered to the graffiti artists in this film. Dig it:

Now I’m not going to say much more about the man here, I’ll let his images do the rocking, but just so you know, he died on May 10 in Fort Myers, Fla, and he lived to be 82 years old. Also here I’d like to thank my main homie johnstonamerica for alerting me and the rest of thegiant crew to Frazetta’s passing.

Let me tell you about a man. A man who both had a lot to do with Liquor, and a little to do with 3 separate generations of Star Trek. Interested yet? Anyone still reading? You’d better be, this is the most amazing adventure you’re ever going to take in two paragraphs. Let me then bring you down by saying the man we’re about to talk about just passed away. He is dead, but his legacy is infinite. He was a voice actor and person actor by the name of Michael Pataki. The picture you see above is a tribute to him as illustrated by the creator of Ren and Stimpy, John K. Michael Pataki, a friend and colleague of K, did the voice for one of the most awesome John K characters ever created: George Liquor. George Liquor played the little known part of owner and master of Ren and Stimpy.

Of course you need to see him in action, so here’s a quick clip!

Then of course there’s the strange and wild journey of a born-again Klingon! Michael Pataki as an actor played a Klingon in the original Star Trek series episode The Trouble with Tribbles (1967!) He then played a completely different Klingon in an episode or Star Trek: The Next Generation (1988), and a re-mix of that same original series Tribbles episode, this time on Deep Space Nine (Trials and Tribble-ations, 1996.) Three series, three decades! He’s everybody’s favorite dimension-traveling Klingon!

And he did a whole crapload of other stuff like Family Guy and B.J. and the Bear. Check him out on imdb, and watch the motorcycle movie Easy Rider in his honor – see if you can find him, he plays Mime #4. No joke.

He lived to be 300 years old.

What was your favorite thing to learn about in school when you were five years old? Ask anyone. Ask anyone at all, ever. They will tell you the exact same thing. Seriously. Dinosaurs. These bad-ass creatures from the past were and ARE so amazingly mystical and magical that they capture the imaginations of generation after generation of human being children since we first started understanding their terribleness in 1842. What’s it what we’ve got right here? A funtastic little kid book made just now by mah man, designer illustrator Ian Smith. It’s a book about dinosaurs, plain, simple, very skillfully done. I love all the illustrations, especially the pterodactyl. Fantastique.

By the way, did you know that on March 4, 2010, a panel of 41 scientists decided that the Chicxulub asteroid impact was really truly the event that trigger the mass extinction of the dinosaurs? That’s wild! Read more links through the Wiki for more informations on that.

Oh LA, what a city you are. How the people (including me) call everywhere in Southern California you. How you’re covered in smog and cannot actually be seen. Yes indeed. How polluted you are. But you didn’t used to be! You used to look nice! Way back in time, over fifffffty yeeeears agoooo, you looked pretty spiffy! Kinda swanky, didn’t you? Yes you did. Let’s have a short look at some of your longer structures, the tall ones and the short ones, the really nice ones and the weird ones. Photos in a collection as collected by Actionlog, a hero for collectors.

This man named Actionlog has a vast collection on flickr of items that fall under the category “vintage.” Now he’s got one amazingly simple and lovely manifesto which I’ve included here below this paragraph, and I think everyone who has the ability to should follow his lead suite. That means get your scanners out, Johnny, it’s time to compute.

I collect vintage postcards, slides and magazines which I scan and put online for everyone to enjoy. I feel it is very important to put this kind of stuff on the internet as to make sure it does not disappear into obscurity.

The photos you see below all come from the Los Angeles California area, if not right in the heart of the city. If you place your mouse over any photo, you’ll see a little bit more detail in the filename of each jpeg. These photos come from a span of time around 20 years, but they’re all from single dates in these years: 1941, 1954, 1962, 1964, 1965. Fantastic colors from a bright moment in time!

I wonder this quite a bit. I swear to GOD I was just thinking about it a couple days ago: where do all the broken, old, useless cars go? Of course they go to the junkyard, right? Get recycled or at least pounded into a smaller amount of waste, right? Maybe. But photographer knows about another place in Kaufdorf where they’re set in the grass and allowed to turn back into the land. Weird? Yes! But it might not be around for long…

This location is called Autofriedhof and it’s located in Kaufdorf, which is in Switzerland. As of late last year (9.09), it was threatened to be shut down, but since their Autofriedhof.ch site is still up, I’m thinking they’re alright.

The photos you see above and below are taken by photographer Stefan Bucher. I’m a big fan both of preserving pieces of history AND of letting some of them rot and die out. In this case, the loveliness is definitely in the rust.

In the year 2006, photographer E. Brady Robinson visited a theme park unlike any other, purchasing there a “Jerusalem Gold Card” allowing the artist access to the park on a yearly basis. Once there, the artist began taking photos. Wonderful photos. The park’s name? “The Holy Land Experience” – an experience that will bring you closer than you’ve ever been before to the entertainment experience of being part of the life of Jesus Christ himself.

Since you’re here, I’m going to go ahead and assume you’ve seen the movie Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior. In it is one of the most fantastic no-words-speaking little men in the whole world. He is a character named “Feral Boy” in the credits, noone says his name the whole movie. In the movie he is known for throwing a bad-ass boomerang that cuts off the fingers of one of the bad guys and chomping its way into the brain of another. He’s a deadly little fellow. He’s also presented with a fun little music box by Mel Gibson! But this is all beside the point. The pictures you see above and below are by an artist who happens to share the name “Feral Boy” with that character, and his paintings here are unbelievable.

Feral boy employs several methods in making his works, including acrylic, collage (including some rather precise cuts of paper and tape), gouache, watercolor, and probably like a half dozen more. Let’s talk. I need you to know who Dan O’Bannon is. He’s one of the largest reasons the first Alien (1979) movie was written, produced, exists. He was one of the two writers on that film, and helped on it through production. Another thing about him that’s rather important I feel is that he was a good friend to H.R. Giger. The artist wild beast that is H.R. Giger is the one who illustrated the monster. Recently, I basically just found out, Dan O’Bannon passed on to death. This is a tribute to that man using his friend H.R. Giger’s artworks, the stranger wildnesses of the film, and the rarities that come from the darkness that is the evil corners of these internets. Be on your guard.

It is a strange legacy to have hit the world strongest with a film about terror. Instead of listing the positive, loving films O’Bannon’d worked on, let’s instead focus on this. The film Alien, basically the place where Dan O’Bannon shined brightest. He worked on a crapload of other things before and after, but this is the thing right now. Right now, nothing else is such a bright star. And in regards to what we, here, at World Famous Design Junkies push into space, there’s a lot of lovely, inspiring, and sometimes fantastically campy imagery, moving images, and sounds in there.

It’s a moment in history that inspired lots and lots of other positive things, wild things, and really really WEIRD things. And here they all are. All of them. Every single one.

ALIEN POST GO!

Behold, an aqueous set of photographs taken and produced by a really radically talented picture taker by the name of Mark Mawson. They’re so aqueous in fact, that they’re nearly all fully submerged. There’s several groups, some of them with a single photo, some of them with several. Discover the beautiful quality inherent in each captured bit of light floating in space, and the color, oh my goodness the color. What a masterful selection of elements.

Below, in order, you will see the following.

First, there is the “Underwater Pinups” set. This is a set of three. If I’m not mistaken, the model goes by the name India Rose. Second, there’s a set of 4 images that go by the name “Underwater Dance.” Then there’s a single image called “Dance with Fish.” After that, there’s another set of four called “Verity.” Finally, there’s a set of two with the model Ingrid by the name “Drowning.”

This reminds me of the underwater adventures of James Cooper. There’s spraypaint in them there water holes. That’s more rough though. The stuff you see above and below, that’s smooth. Weightless and drifting, deep in the water.

It is an enjoyable, healthy, and important thing to do the same thing over and over again when you’re in this graphics field. It’s research, even when it’s a formula so simple as matchbook, pen, ink, strangeness from the inner workings of the outer spaces of the mind.

Oh so you’ve got old photos at recognizable places, yes? So you’d like to reawaken the ghost in the machine? That’s scary. Let’s do it! First, get an old photo you can place. Next, get a camera. Then let’s go to the location you know connects to the photo. OK! Now, stand in just the right place and angle, hold that photo up somehow, and take a photo. Foosh! Look what you’ve done! This is friggin magical!

I think it’s really creepy too. It gives me a strange vibe, like I’ve never seen anything like this before, other than in horror movies with mirrors and such reflecting things you can’t otherwise see. I believe photographs have strange powers too. But don’t worry about that, you aren’t afraid of satan are you? Naw!

Let’s look through a whole gallery of these sorts of photos for some amazing inspiration to see what we’re gonna do!

Powell isn’t necessarily the guy who came up with the idea to put an old photo in front of a new scene to take a picture, but he’s REALLY GOOD AT IT, and he does have a gigantic pool of these sorts of photos floating around on flickr. This pool grows everyday, and it’s awesome and amazing. When you take some of these photos, be sure to contribute to Powell’s group for the most massive thumbs ups and such.

When you take photos like this, you might want to start with some stock photos if you havn’t already got a supply. A good resource for these sorts of photos to put in front of photos, is Powell’s source list. This is where to start if you havn’t been collecting what we in the industry call “instant relatives” from estate sales and rummage sales for 23p apiece.

This is my sister and I in one of our earlier sparring sessions when we were just beginning with orange and green ninja belts. It’s some time in the early 90′s, probably 1991, Halloween. This lovely bunny painting was done in watercolor by designer / artist Alice Wong. It was an assignment in which the student was to find a “famous” painting and re-configure it with an animal in place of a human. Strange! I’d love to get my hands on the rest of the paintings done in your class, Wong. This reminds me of those cartoons where animals replace humans in every aspect, as if the earth had chosen furry fellows instead of us meaty humans, but their society had chosen the same moves to make.

The original painting, incase you were wondering, was called “Girl with A Pearl Earring” and it was painted by Johannes Vermeer in oils.

This was a watercolor assignment where we had to find a famous painting, in this case a painting by Vermeer, known as “Girl with A Pearl Earring”, and substitute the person into an animal of our choice.

I chose a bunny =^^=!!!

Here’s a DIY project of ease and excellence if ever have I seen one. Designer Fabio Parizzi had the idea to print using nothing but sunlight. How would one do this? One would have to use something that acts as a stencil, the sun to shine through the stencil, and a surface that would agree to fade on command. What Fabio Parizzi has done is make a poster using this concept saying “Every Thing Appears Out of ****- ***”.

While most posters are made by adding material to paper, this one is made by taking away. That makes it opposite. Also a way to take this sort of project further would be to keep track of the time the sun hit the poster: temporal invisible ink!

This reminds me of another fantastic poster project whose creation process is quite a bit dirtier. It never fails to amaze me how many different ways to make a poster there are that have NOT been done yet. Get to work!

A celebration of the sun!

Ryan McLennan is an artist who uses graphite and acrylic on canvas. The show these paintings are from is called “The Strain of Inheritance” and it opens very soon up at Joshua Linger Gallery. The centerpiece is shown above: a 52″ x 68″ giant called “Departure.” This piece features a giant tree trunk intertwined with bones, bears, and bison, it reminds a fellow of some of the oddest passages from the book “Ender’s Game” – where a giant’s been slain, his carcass having become home to animals and humans galore.

All’s recycled, all’s used.

Widness the severe sharpness and depressing eyeballs of the animals here. Look also for the bears made of leaves draped over the living animals. And the bones. And the vines. What a set of lovely connections.

Hot dogs! Oh my goodness hotdogs! Coney Island Dogs. That’s what’s up. We’ve got a place around here (Minneapolis, Minnesota) called Uncle Frankey’s. Perhaps you’ve heard of it. They make amazing Coney Island Dogs. Supposedly they’re better on the REAL island, but who knows! These people do. And when I say these people, I mean all the people who took the photos included in the super insanely huge World Famous Design Junkies Coney Island Sign Explorer Collection. Oh wow the signs. Look at them all!

Ah yes, the island. All of these photos are straight off the island. Coney Island was the biggest park in the USA between 1880 and World War II, but now it’s sorta… fading… but that’s alright! It’s still insane! It’s a fast collection of fantastically clean painted signs and erratic, calculated oddities. And of course, the lights at night, or as we love to call signs of just this nature: Night Type.

BEHOLD, and be held… by the excellence.

Ironically, “Coney Island hot dog” describes a product that is unknown in its namesake, Coney Island, New York, where hot dogs (usually called “franks” from frankfurter) are traditionally made only from beef and served plain or with sauerkraut on a bun without other adornment except the availability of mustard, which at Nathan’s was applied by the customer. The only reason for the name is the generic hot dog’s origins in Coney Island, where it said to have been invented by Charles Feltman in 1867, who put a Vienna sausage in a roll and called it “Coney Island Red Hots.” Some people, unsure of its ingredients, called it a hot dog. Different references claim that the locals thought the sandwiches reminded them of Feltman’s ever-present companion, a dachshund, called a wiener dog even back then,and the term hot dog became a popular term. – WEEKII

Hooray for photographer Landry A! It’s a fabulously graphic-minded photo-taker who covers both au-natural photographs AND unnatural design. I jest, of course, as all good design is natural as the grass. What L.A. has done here is to keep a photo series going of all the excellence in the several countries Landry is able to visit on a regular (and irregular) basis. The set you’re about to peek and flip through is out of Africa. Black and white and color are two separate sets, I’m sure you’ll be able to tell which is which.

The photos you’re about to see are from Niger, Africa, and surrounding areas (I think some from Chad and Mali maybe too.) The collection we’ve got here are mostly the signage and graphic-natured photographs from the set. The extended set you can see on Landry A’s full portfolio site.

Artist/designer DAIN has a new (and first!) solo show (congrats!) of artworks like these at the Brooklynite Gallery which is located in (you guessed it) Brooklyn New York. The work in this show revolves around the 1940s and is embellished and visually exploded by the brightness and wildness of DAIN. This particular print is a limited edition of 30 with super-wacky destructions in each one.

Better run fast right after it if you’re gonna catch it!

Tigers are a rather iconic species if I do say so myself. Their lovely stripes and ferocious yet collected disposition makes for a totally awesome beast-form to strive for. In my search for the perfect image of a tiger to reflect on during my daily meditation time I happened upon this fabulous “Korean Tiger” print by artist Nancy Reed*. I thought wowie, that’s fantastic – it’s so full of majesty, so full of excellence!

Und so the tiger icon collection began. Across the entire internets of the world I scoured and found the greatest. And a couple of the least, just for larfs.

Below you’ll find first four or so photos of the Nancy Reed print, then a mini collection of tiger tattoos (because that’s where it becomes serious business with tigers) and a couple paintings and illustrations. In design (amongst other things, I’m sure,) exploration is important. It’s become a lot LESS important in the past few years as the digital revolution made it an industrial amount of easy to create reasonable design in a relatively short amount of time. Here we go. Oh CRIPES what were they thinking? They were absolute geniuses! That’s what you’re about to say like 50 times in this thread. This is World Famous Design Junkies first big retro thread of kitsch, inside is a collection of items that are not big enough to have their own thread, but much too big 2 b 4gotten. Most or ALL of them were made before the internet age, and are therefor just as good as new. That’s the rules of the internet. Discover for yourselves the wonders of the kitsch design universe.

To understand kitsch you must first understand the nature of the kitsch designer. This kitsch designer that’s being spoken about takes things to the next level of literal translation. They put puppies in human outfits, they bring a boom box when a tiny radio would be perfectly fine, and they wear an eyepatch. They’ve got everything in full color and they never let ink go to waste. They say, “man, the paint is here, and it’s gonna have to go somewhere, so if anyone is going to waste it, it’s going to be me.”

Then the kitsch designer splatters the paint all over the chia-pet canvas.

Holy crap I wonder if you know what kind of a badass Dylan C Lathrop is. I wonder that. I need to show you this thing you see right above this text: it is a county seal that Dylan C Lathrop designed with his bare hands, a stick, and some tiger blood that he just spilled with only a stick and his bare hands. That’s what’s going on right now.

This is real deal, real thing here. Not only is that seal basically perfect, it’s about to be (or already is) totally official. The official seal of Laramie County, Wyoming, USA, North America, Earth.

Laramie County is located in the southeast corner of Wyoming and shares a border with Nebraska to the east and Colorado to the south. It is at the crossroads of two major interstate highways and two major railroads. Residents enjoy a stable, growing economy, a high-quality of life, excellent educational system and a low tax structure. Laramie County ranks first in population and fifteenth in area when compared to the other twenty-two counties in Wyoming.
