From the streets of these internets comes this book of pages, a guide for women in dating men circa 1938. Now with this, and more than a couple other things on World Famous Design Junkies, you might ask why, with such regular, un-amazing typography and mediocre pictures, this set of book clippings would be included on the site? Shouldn’t WFDJ just be covering really skillful graphics, well-set letters, fantastic illustrations? Aw hell naw!
Let’s discuss this important understanding – why these pages are enthralling. How that understanding can be applied to what we’re doing in projects we’re doing today.
Take a look at the pictures. They’re absurd. They’re like early cinema, the actors turning the drama meter over to 11. You understand what they’re talking about instantly, and now, in a basically comedic way. They’re funny, but that’s not it. What’s it is how these relationship situations reflect on the situations we get in today – and how we feel about those situations.
The idea that the pet-like obedience the woman is supposed to work with is totally absurd, tied to the idea that the images used to describe this obedience are defiantly dramatic, that’s what’s important. You could skip a step with these and instead of interpreting what works to apply to new projects, just take these images and slap them on some woman-power product, you’re good. Right? Sure, you money grabber you.
It’s the feeling. Taste the feeling, and why you feel it.
But above all, stay sober, and make sure your socks aren’t wrinkled.
